Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour. Understanding values and form is the key to making your drawings and paintings look three dimensional. When learning about shading, the first step is to learn how to accurately perceive values. Start with simple greyscale exercises to train your eye to see and compare values.

seems like it would make the most sense to find the lightest and darkest parts of the painting and label those first and work your way towards the middle
