  • Decided to have a wee change from the sea kayaking so first time in a river since last October and only second time in fresh water this year. Paddled down the river Tweed - one of Scotland's 'big four' rivers - between Peebles and Peel. It's a nice route but hard work with the water level being so low... think I'll head back to the sea next week!

Do you wear wetsuit or a dry suit when kayaking in Scottish rivers and reservoirs.

In the sea, always a dry suit. Rivers in winter, normally dry suit or semi dry suit. Inland lochs/reservoirs, etc. depends how large it is (if we're likely to be a long distance from shore) and how cold it is. Hot, summer day near the shoreline, wetsuit at most, sub-zero winter conditions, dry suit. Anything in between, somewhere between the two.

Slug do you find it a problem with these kayaks not having footrests I would like to buy one but the footrest problem makes me unsure.

Not at all mate, but I get your point. I would certainly have problems without footrests in my sea kayak, but I don't find it a problem with these. If you're doing serious rapids - grade 4 or above - you can get thigh straps which are designed for the Sea Eagle Explorer range which clip on to the D rings. I've never used them but apparently, they're good.

You could very easily DIY a solution with paracord and PVC pipe.
