After the "Happy New Year" song fail, JC asked Leon why he couldn't remember the words to such a famous song. Leon came back with, "Hell, I only sing it once a year!" As quick witted as he is with his fingers.
I remember seeing this live on New Years Eve. I'm not sure of the year, it seems like I remember that I was home from college for my Christmas/New Year's break, which would have made it New Years Eve of 1988, 89, 90 or 91. One of the funniest interviews I've seen. Wish this clip showed more of the interview, I remember Leon pulling a jalapeno pepper out of his pocket and say "It came with the suit".....
Loved how Doc and his band didn't play over Leon's guitar playing. That seems like one of the best sign of really accomplished musicians. It's like they get that it's the total sound that matters and letting a lead instrumental shine. Just the best! Also pretty funny how it looks like, right after Tommy Newsom gets done playing, he'll be ready to sit down and review your loan application.
I am so glad to have found this! That clip of him performing "Auld Lang Syne" used to be uploaded by another user on TH-cam and it was one of my favorite clips of Leon ever! When that user deleted the video a couple years ago I was so sad without it, so you just made my day! :)
This must be on the Johnny Carson show which you don't find out until later. But Doc Severinsen is on trumpet and Tommy (forgot last name) on the clarinet (assuming all but Leon are members of the Tonight Show band.) Would be nice to have a date of broadcast but it looks to be 1986, 1987, or 1988.
Thank you for this great video billga200!!! The only issue I have is you cut a really funny part right before Leon is about to sing Auld Lang Syne where he forgets the words or pretends to.
Wow! From the latter years of the Tonight Show w/ Jonny Carson! No less than Doc Severinsen on trumpet and Tommy Newsom on Clarinet. Can anybody name the rest of the lineup?
@snorkelbda03 I think the story is that it's smokin' hot and enough said! :) Well, maybe the sombrero isn't all that sexy, but with the beret it sure is.
Oh Leon you left us way too too soon ! But you will never be gone from my mind ! See you again one day .
I’ve got no clue why he’s in full mariachi attire, but I’m here for it.
I’m proud to be the caretaker of the 1930 National Leon is playing on the show.
Jealous!
I was wondering what lucky soul got it. Congratulations.
I wanna play it
be good to that thing.
Thomas Dailey nearly everyday.
You can't go wrong with a one eyed tuba player. Perfect; Leon was one of a kind, a real treat.
I never thought I would see Leon actually standing up and playing . . . much less wearing a sombrero. He's still cookin' . . .
DrRussPhd not anymore :(
OmG I love him. What a fun guy. Love the sombrero. Viva Leon Redbone
Wonderful, and a great band in accompaniment of our unique hero!
My father, R.I.P. , loved and introduced me to Leon ✌️❤️

He was the best, and Johnny Carson really loved him.

I think Leon and Bugs would get along just fine...
Was This 1991 Or 1992? I Remember Watching This Air Live. First Time I Ever Heard Leon Play Polly Wolly Doodle At That Tempo. Awesome!

It's all true. And it's also the blues.
Nice! Thanks
Why is Leon dressed like a mariachi? Not complaining, just wondeing. :D Miss you Leon. Merry Christmas.
Anita Archibald it matches the hat

SUPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Армянин Дикран Гобалян в сомбреро!
Is that Doc Severinsen and Tommy Newsom playing with Leon? It's the Carson show, so it must be.
Carson was a big Leon Redbone fan.
Sure looks like them!
And Ed Shaughnessy on drums. Seems like the entire backup crew is from The Tonight Show band.
Is the first song Laughing Blues?
Yes.
RIP
😂😂😂
one guy didn't get the memo about wearing black ;)
WTH is Merv doing on Johnny's show? Nice performances all around.
