I just changed the valve cover gaskets and all intake and plenum metal gaskets and upon torquing everything to spec following the bolt tightening sequence in the manual, I’m now getting a p0171 and p0170 on my 2002 Honda Odyssey. I’ve visually inspected all hoses and taken it all apart 3 times already and still can’t find the source of the leak. All 6 injectors are also new and OEM. I’m stumped
I have a P0174 on my 02 Lexus RX300 . If it’s a low fuel pressure,it should be both banks,right ? When I drive,it runs very good. But at idle, it shakes a little bit. That indicates a vacuum leak,right ? Thanks
Also need to do a fuel volume test before writing off fuel delivery. Most techs know right away when both banks are lean it is a air mass sensor or a vacuum leak that services both banks. When a car lopes at idle or runs poorly at idle it is most often a vac leak.Your vacuum is highest at idle. That sucks in more air than in running conditions.Any tech that goes after fuel delivery first in that situation is scamming the customer or warranty.I do like the smoke machine for diagnostic more than the method we used.
you can use propane or carb cleaner ( carb cleaner is less safe since it coats surfaces and could ignite) however you just spray alittle around area's that could be pulling in outside air (intake area's, vaccum lines, etc) until the engine revs.. once you get it reving from spraying in one spot off and on you know where your leak is. i think "realfixesrealfast" have a video on using propane to find a leak. Also "Ericthecarguy"channel has one as well on how to use carb cleaner method. cheers
Great vid!👍🏼I hav po171 on my 2008 pont vibe and car has No symptoms - purrs. I’ve chkd maf sensor and intake valve gaskets. Gonna try and chk fuel pressure as everything else looks good. Also, it predominantly happens in cold weather - any suggestions??😣 Thx
I got a P0171 code in my Chevrolet 5.7 LS1 V8 powered Holden Commodore last week but I didn't have a smoke machine to diagnose this, the O ring on the fuel filler cap had a split in it,it was only noticeable when the car sat for a few minutes then the engine was restarted at a service station for example - a fault code or codes would be set, previously,I also got a P0174 code as well. So I checked the obvious things first, note the fuel tank wasn't holding vacuum, note Holden didn't fit a fuel tank pressure sensor so the P0442 code is irrelevant in my car. I would consider making my own smoke machine but the obvious things such as the MAF sensor clamps coming loose have caused a P0102,P0171 & a P0174 code in the past !
quick thought here, it should hold pressure when powered and/or commanded on. Check the vent valve, may be stuck open and causing it NOT to hold pressure
The tank should be under a vacuum which it is,when I fitted the new fuel filler cap,I noticed a drop in idle speed for a few seconds then the idle speed stabilized at its normal idle speed so that tells me that the EVAP system is functioning correctly when the engine is running !
If you looked at the fuel trim at idle, you would see Positive numbers but, if you raised the RPM, they would drop due to the vac dropping. This points to a vac leak.
Was the gasket leaking on both banks as DTC po171 & po174 reports?? Vid shows only one gasket / bank leaking smoke. If only one side, then why did both banks get reported?
with one bank running lean the system o2s and trys to rich the mixture causing an imbalance in the engine so if left long enough the computer will try to compensate for both banks it (the ecm tune) only being allowed to add so much extra fuel will set both DTCs also the intake can change as it heats up causing the other bank to lean out too as it expands
1997 F-150 was getting po171, lean 1 bank, under the hood I found a pvc hose had came off, also clean MAF sensor with maf spray cleaner...cleared code at auto part store...lite never has came back since...
that system may take a couple "trips" for the monitor to recognize a real fault from a intermittent fault. Drive it for a few days and if it doesn't come back on, then it's most likely fixed.
Will that make it throw codes on one bank and not the other? Im getting po300 code and crappy idle at cold starts also not functioning solenoid vent valve on my 03 Tahoe,oh also bank 1 sensor 1 low voltage and heat codes
Hi I came across your vid today and I was wondering if you could answer a quick question? I have a 2001 Ford F-150, i did a smoke test because of a lean code I am getting. The only place the smoke came out was from a little round vent cap on the IAC valve. Is that little vent cap supposed to leak smoke? I remember doing a smoke test on my truck a few years back for a pcv valve hose leak and I don’t remember that cap ever leaking before. The only reason I’m questioning this is because I saw a couple posts online about this and I saw some people had said that vent cap will leak smoke during a smoke test. But again, when I did this test a few years back I think I would’ve noticed it. Thank you much appreciated
realfixesrealfast Okay thank you so much for the response. Lol all day at work I kept going back and forth in my head if it should or not. Thank you again
great video! I have a 2002 vw jetta turbo, and took it to goodyear and they mention I need to replace a "Hose to Snorkel" what is that? they said i have to get it from the dealer. or were this part located at... the code coming up is P0171 Lean Bank 1
Nice video, you work methodically. Please don't forget us shade tree guys, who probably won't have that fancy smoke machine. How would a spray can of carb cleaner worked?
When I do the smoke test on my 99 camry, smoke comes out of the EGR modulator filter. Is this normal? Should I seal it and keep looking? I've got P0171 , the car idles poorly, and I can hear a hissing noise.
I have a 2001 2500hd 6.0 and the engine shutters only when I hit a bump, and P0174 comes up on my programmer. what would be the cause in this case? I tried shaking wires under the hood and under the truck while running but didn't shake anything that made the engine miss. any ideas?
I have the the same to lean codes on my 01 Ford Explorer Sport, 4.0, 6cly. I now have had a few vacuum hoses that needed to be replaced, replace the pcv valve, replaced the fuel filter & I just spent quite a bit of money to replace my upper & lower intake gaskets. Still have the same 2 codes. I ordered a new MAF that will be arriving today. If that does not fix it, what else should I do or have done? I'm losing my mind here.
I see that smoke entered into the INTAKE (after the air filter) will send smoke into the crankcase: oil filler tube and oil cap. I noticed my oil cap wasnt sealing and the tube grommet was jacked up. Seemed to help......but still chasing down P0174: just one of 2 banks (GMC Savana 5.7l V8)
hi, when u do smoke test, I assume some of the cylinder will be in intake or exhaust stroke even if we had first cylinder in TDC, this means i will always find smoke coming out in exhaust or in throttelbody , is my understanding correct. I know you have sealed breather house but have not exhaust side, can u please advise if i have misunderstood something
Im dealing w P0174. So just one bank. STFT is running at 50%! O2 sensors are new, good. Fuel pressure etc is fine. Im wondering if a faulty TPS could affect the PCM and affect just one bank. THoughts? THANKS
@@realfixesrealfast Thanks. I found an air leak at the air intake duct which Im addressing soon. Bank 2 Sensor 1 reads STFT of 50% (!) and the LTFT is also quite high. @@atomicdmt8763 You said "The spark plugs and O2 sensors on that side are fouling". that means there is excessive fuel on either that bank or those injectors. I would suggest a fuel leak down test on all the injectors.
@@realfixesrealfast Thanks. This P0174 issue just started a few weeks ago and I noticed all the spark plugs on that bank were black, carboned up. No misfire codes. The other side is fine, clean. Perhaps a computer ECU issue? much thanks

Very nice, description and analysis.
Is it normal to get some smoke from an EGR Valve Body?? Mine has slots cut out in the body of the EGR Valve and some smoke comes out of those slots.
remember, EGR is exhaust gas recirculation, so that smoke must be in the exhaust gas. That is not normal and should be checked
