I'm pretty sure Aizawa never actually planned to have any kids or even get married in the cannon verse. But when he was handed the responsibility of taking care of Eri, he possibly changed his mind and now considers her his own, even if they are in no way related. Its honestly the best thing I've ever seen.

In the spin off prequel comic Vigilantes, Aizawa does mention how he wants the life some other retired heroes have - where they settle down with a family. So I think he did, somewhere in his mind, picture himself with kids or married. Even if he won't admit to those he's close too (he said it to two more minor characters) for some fear or whatever he deems as rational.

Thing is, his quirk is pretty much the only thing levelling the playing field at that point, and Eri still needs him as well as his quirk. So, he thinks of her, takes his knife, and cuts his leg off right below the knee to stop the drug from spreading.
