  • Hello sew-friends! Today's video is taking a deep dive into marking tools for fabric. After you cut out your fabric, the first thing you need to do is transfer all the pattern markings from the pattern to the fabric. Trust me, you don't want to skip it!
In the video, I'll share a variety of tools that can transfer marks to fabric and the pros and cons of each. Plus, I'll demonstrate how to mark a dart using a tracing wheel and transfer paper and how to mark a dart using a hole punch and chalk. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions.

Great demo! I hadn't heard of a pattern notching tool and will definitely get one. (I'm from the era of tailor's tacks.) I use the Chaco liner when quilting and have found that it rolls smoother in one direction than in another--you've probably figured that out since this video was made! I have not had success at all with the tracing paper which I tried to mark quilting patterns. If the fabric is patterned, it definitely doesn't show up. And for me to get a visible line on solid fabric, I have to really press hard.

You can fold the paper and clip a hole, like I did at the dart tip.

When using a tracing wheel, you said to use a surface that you can wash because the pattern also gets transferred onto the surface you're using. Do the markings come off quite easily if you wipe it with a cloth, or do you have to really scrub at it? I don't want to have permanent markings on my cutting mat!

I think it depends on the paper. I have other paper that's really old and it's not double sided so the marks don't go onto the surface. (I don't know why this Dritz paper is double sided. Kinda inconvenient.) You could also put a piece of paper between the transfer paper and the surface to protect the surface, then you won't need to clean it.

The Chaco chalk marker has a right way and a wrong way to use. The wheel will only move properly in one direction. You will be much happier with the results if you check the wheel for that before using.

Thank you Diane!! I had googled for advice but hadn't found that tip.

i bought some of the chaco pens, i see that you couldnt get it to mark. No problem, just turn the wheel in the opposite direction and it works well.
