totally agree with this view. Funny how the media latches on to the last 2 games to say we have a bad D and that it's their big concern for the Bills, when in fact our D has played pretty well most of the season.
hey man thx for this breakdown, I think most people understand that the D was just trying not to give up the big play but I like how you showed that they weren't just "sitting back" and playing prevent D like what some of the narrative that was out there. Great stuff I like the shorter format video too!
I can probably get into this… pretty tight, concise content. I used to consume every single Cover 1 program in past years but I’ve really cut back this season. I still consume the the pre and post game shows with you and Greg and of course the film room…. Religiously!!! But Prohasa’s voice is too much for an hour without Eric to break it up and the other shows just aren’t that compelling or of the same quality as the main course’s I still dig into Greg’s solo show from time to time… depending on how much apatite I have for more sports coverage. I did dig this through. It’s nice to get a different set of eyes on film. Film never gets boring.
It is funny how fast the narratives form after a game., not necessarily based on anything other than feelings and impressions. I like this new format. It has a high signal to noise ratio!
Thanks! Going to try and get more of these when I see a narrative floating around that I don't particularly agree with. I have concerns about the defense. Especially given the historical performance in post season. But this game wasn't nearly as bad as it looked.
Stunts are aggresive. They also blitzed MULTIPLE times on the final drive also. Including one on the goalline. But the stunt % for the year was much lower than we saw in this game.
The win was never in doubt. 12 secs , needing a Touchdown with no timeouts from the 50 yard line. Is a hail mary 60 yarder. Rush 4 with 7 back in coverage . After we went up 35-21 there was never a doubt
If you watch that one play from the backside, you can see how he avoided the sack. They showed it quick on the replay during the game. I couldn't tell if it was planned or an accident.
One more thing. Since we can't rely on our current Defense esp when we hit the playoffs, I think we should structure our game plan around that aspect. Establish the run - and run like crazy to eat the clock up. When we do pass, structure pass plays over the middle, etc and let WR's know to stay in bounds to keep that clock running. This will keep our D off the field, we'll score our points but do it with 7-10 minute drives. We got 3 solid running backs. Get that O line fired up, use two TE schemes and run it down opponents throats. How bout some jet sweeps too...and will we ever figure out how to successfully figure out how to run a screen play? Since JA has been here, we just can't run them. IMO, that's a coaching issue. We SUCK at running screens and most of the times I can't even tell it's a screen play, that's how bad it is. In summary...to solve our weak D issues we need to run the ball, eat up the clock and stack our points.
So the Bills score over 40 points and give up 40 points in consecutive games. One common denominator, both games were played in a domed stadium. Just a coincidence, maybe, but no more games in a Dome unless it is the Superdome!
Can’t lie, I don’t trust the DEF on 3rd down🤷🏽♂️ we BARELY make 3rd down stops WHEN WE NEED IT. If it’s 3rd and over 4 yards, this defense will give it up. Why don’t they do something different. Every team runs damn near the same scheme on 3rd downs against this DEF. I don’t understand how the 3rd down defense is so SITUATIONAL BAD.
The Bills defense = Dolphins offense. Supposedly small and fast--and doesn't work. Even the line is small by NFL standards. Well good luck with a tight end or a stout running back like Derek Henry. Taron Johnson can only watch so much of the field.
Agree, they keep doing what isn't working. Even 3rd and longs teams are burning us. 3rd and 17 and they get a 20 yd catch where their guy is wide open and opening a can a beer.
The eye test is telling me you’re not being a homer. 9:08 Bernard makes that play 8/10. In the rams game we had the perfect coverage call and then Puka makes an astronomical play. Now 3rd down especially 3rd and long for some reason we are getting cooked. I’m with you however, the defense isn’t as bad as people are making it seem.
Good breakdown. The only thing I would worth mentioning is the Bills let the Lions score WAY too fast in the 2nd half. If they give up points/yards that chews up 5 plus minutes of clock I am fine with that. But if i am not mistaken I think they let up 3 or 4, 70 yard TD drives in the 2nd half that was under 3 minutes in length
deception.. The Lions made great plays in desperation. The Lions offense has been boat racing teams all year .. Bills defense does need to work on getting of the field on those 3rd and longs though
The issue is the playoffs where either defense or special teams has exited the Bills from the playoffs every single year. It will happen again this year. If we play Baltimore, lights out. Nobody talks about Bass missing the shortest FG of the year in the NFL. He should be gone long ago. I know there are a lot of injuries and the LB crew toast, but like the Lions the Bills failed to adapt and Goff chewed up the defense in the numbers which is nickel, LB and their dime packages. Outside of Cam getting schooled multiple times the DB/FS did not do that poor of a job. It was these crossing routes in the oceans in the middle. It was the Gulf of Mexico. And this was with their running game off line. Is it just me or when the Bills take a timeout early in the half because of some miscomm and those come to bite us also. In any case I just have a bad feeling and the next three games are bottom feeders so OMG I hope Hyde gets back in. Sorry but JA17 is out of the world but one off day or an interception and watch out, I have zero confidence the D can hold the line.
Bass? There's no one available that's better than him. IMO, I feel better about him hitting 40-60 yarders than I do of him making extra points! Now that's fkd up! LOL And yes, this D we have right now is really really bad. This is all on JA's shoulders, once again.
I got through two sentences of this wall of text… and that’s all I needed to realize you weren’t a serious person. Defense nor special teams lost the Texans wildcard. Or the AFC Championship. Or the Cincinnati divisional round.
When we are playing our best defense at any point during the year, it’s perfect defense for a big lead situation. Making teams INCH their way down the field and take 12 plays while facing plenty of resistance via pass rush and relatively stingy coverage. To concede 16 yards of 12 yards isn’t playing to the standard.
Lions scored 28 points in the last 17 minutes of the game. That did happen. So did the Rams game, 37 scored by their offense, that happened. It could be a small sample, but OTOH McDermott’s defense has not held up well against the best QBs in the playoffs. He beat Skylar Thompson, Mason Rudolph, and Mac Jones. Not Mahomes or Burrow. So yeah, the defense concerns me. We’ve seen this movie before and this defense does not seem better.
@@willgann Maybe. But that's not what this video is about. It's purely about the second half of this last game and if the context matches the feel/narrative.
In all fairness against Burrow the team was drained after the Damar incident. The year after we had so many injuries, locker rooms issues, changes of coaching staff mid year. I don’t think its been as much of a factor for a couple years as these narratives suggest, but I could be wrong
@@stogeez2637 I really think this is a wildly under looked factor for the playoffs in 2022… Josh never seemed right after that, and his team absolutely feeds off his energy and confidence… I think a lot of fans don’t realize it wasn’t just damar, it’s that it also reminded them of the tragedy that happened to Kim Pegula, and this is TIGHT knit team and I REALLY think it f’d up their entire psyches… I really do
Defense has been spooky most of the year. Some letdowns for me? Von Miller stinks it up, plain and simple. Milano was way too rusty to take as many snaps as he did - and he got hurt anyway. he may be done. Dorian Williams I thought had been playing very good all year nd should have played more in the rams and Lions game. Overall pass rush has been weak, non-existent at times. And lack of any GOOD blitzing is huge. Rapp is good but dishes out hits but then gets hurt himself, I don't see him being a long term solid safety due to that weakness. Hamlin? I just don't see him making any game changing plays, EVER. Two INT's, but not much else. His overall play reminds me a lot of Tre Edmonds where he's there just to mop up already tackled guys, although yes he's made some tackles on his own but no big hits ever. And same goes for him never blasting any receivers with good legal hits to break up pass plays. Oliver redeemed himself with the Lions game but he's not been effective as much as I thought he was going to be this year. D struggles stopping RB's who just gash up the middle untouched way too often. When your leading tacklers are your safeties that speaks volumes. I despise McD/Babich when they go into that soft zone coverage. Too often it puts teams right back in the game. Bills dominated that game yet it came down to the wire - ONCE AGAIN. At he end imagine had the Lions got the onsides kick and won that game? JUST IMAGINE!!! The D needs help, from coaching aspects and player performance. The only way I see the Bills winning a SB is if JA17 dons his cape and stacks up 50-60 points in the playoffs. I have not been a McD supporter since the 13 seconds let down and I don't see him "learning from this." His timeclock management continues to be piss-poor at critical times in critical games and the same goes for his use with timeouts and red-flag challenges. JA17 has what? 5-6 good years left? We need to get it done NOW. Is McD that guy to do it? I honestly don't think so. But I hope I'm wrong. I'm 66 years old, been following the Bills since I was 5 years old and I'm running out of time myself. In all that said, GO BILLS!
Let's look at a scenario. Team falls behind by big score. QB brings team back within a score and loses in spite of scoring 42 points! Team A : Bills losing to Rams. Oh, Josh Allen had MVP performance in a loss! Team B: Lions losing to Bills! No mention of Goff's unbelievable performance by ANY MEDIA!! Buffalo and Josh Allen scored 48 points against a JV defense, where 90 % original defensive starters and back ups for the Lions were missing! Only 3 starting LBs were gone, patched with STREET players, of whom Allen took advantage!!Sure, super easy for ANY QB!! Goff did it METHODICALLY against a very good defense just missing 2 starting DBs! Amazing hypocrisy by media, blinded by glamour of Josh Allen's dual threat!! Goff did a way better job against a much better defense and still you guys keep ignoring his superb performance!! If QBs has reversed defensive issues, Goff would have put up 70 points!!!
Had a 21 point lead with 3 minutes left in the third , sweating out a onside kick to possibly lose is ridiculous, don't care how you try and spin it lol
They had a 99% win probably going into the onside kick with 12 seconds left and no timeouts, onside kick in that situation is under 10% likelihood and Lions have converted 0%

Great info thank you!
Thanks for always showing support!
That tip ball on 3rd & 17 made it look like a game cuz it's Bernard or miliano pick that off its going to be 42-14
The game was well in hand the entire time from what i watched. Sure there were some gaffs, shit happens. Got the W, Patriots week here we go.
Not sure what how they were remaining “aggressive” when they only rushed four.
Stunts are aggresive. They also blitzed MULTIPLE times on the final drive also. Including one on the goalline.
But the stunt % for the year was much lower than we saw in this game.
Another issue I see when we blitz (which is rare) is that we don't have anyone really fast enough or effective enough to get to the QB.
Great segment

Game script. Situational football. Detroit stopped trying to run the ball, so of course Detroit became one dimensional. Kudos Ed Oliver

This came from my guy Buffalo on the Brain. He's on all social media. TELL HIM!
I wonder if Milano and Bernard running to the same spot, kept them both from getting the pic? At least they didn’t collide. That would have been ugly.
Milano has looked last out there the last two games. His fumble recovery (I think) just plopped in his lap, lol
