The key thing I've noticed in interior design is that each piece / outfit should only have one unexpected element. If there's more than one unexpected element, it feels like an unnecessary amount of contrast for contrast's sake. For example, the second to last one with the green + yellow rugby shirt with the short silver sequin skirt, using a neutral color + "boring" fabric for the skirt would've worked so much better, because there's already juxtaposition with the big boxy shirt and tiny skirt; it doesn't need the extra layer of being covered in sequins.
Most of these outfits look straight-up bad to me. They don't really feel "styled"; they just feel like the person has randomly taken a bunch of pieces out of the closet and worn them. They lack harmony. It feels like there's no thinking behind them, or that the only thinking behind them is "shocking" the viewer. And I'm not necessarily against the shocking effect, but I do think that if you are going down that path there has to be some kind of purpose to it, as in you should at least be making some kind of coherent enough statement (but I guess that's kind of subjective). most of these "im so different" outfits by alleged fashion girlies are absolutely terrible and heavily relying on a nice body/face to make it seem palatable. take away the tiktok algorithm and they would never think these are good fits. and everyone is being extremely influenced by that fact that you keep seeing it over and over to feel that you like it or it's kinda cute when it's nawwwwt. people are 100% gonna look back on these outfits and cringe themselves to sleep lol
Pre social media, I think people took inspiration from magazines, but I don’t think anyone thought this is how you should look every day. Reality shows and then performative social media has really warped people’s understanding that these are basically models trying to take editorial photos that make others pause their scroll, not people going to run errands on a bus. The few times an influencer actually wears a Pinterest outfit to do normal life things, there’s a hilarious self-report litany of impractical, uncomfortable, feeling goofy consequences. I was hot, I couldn’t sit down, I had to take a cab, people stared, etc. I’m honestly starting to even chafe at women saying “style” a look. Girl, you’re wearing clothes, calm down.
I'm not American but these outfits I can see the most in NY vlog 💀 they really be wearing ANYTHING. these extreme juxtaposition just annoying. no purpose, no harmony and call it a day. I'm sure these people aren't poor, they wear for the sake of photos
Isn’t the rugby top and sparkly skirt just a reverse of the feminine top and shoes with the track pants? If she has sporty shoes why wouldn’t you like that even more because it’s more functional?
You're being really kind about some terrible outfit choices. All these people look like they've tried so hard to be trendy that they've lost all edge and are coming across as really tragic.
@8:40 Amanda walks around like that pretty much everyday in NYC lol you must be new to her style, her style is very avant garde/maximalist she lives for looks like that
