This is a lovely, lush and atmospheric score that perfectly captures the bittersweet irony of Puyi's position of being the last emperor of china--living in the lap of luxury and being revered almost as a god but having no real political power, or agency to walk out of his own home until political currents forced him into ever shrinking spheres of influence. His only freedom comes as being just another faceless commoner under the thumb of the CCP, but is that truly freedom at all? I would not have wanted to walk in his shoes regardless.
