In Spain it was very common as the day was divided in two (a bit less common now) and lunch breaks would be long allowing you to go home eat and take a siesta and then go back to work. We do things pretty late here so it allows you to be more productive during the afternoon and ejoy the evenings with friends or whatever you like doing without feeling exhausted
