Most people are more familiar with Marvel, hence the choice of words. Plus, strength-based builds are usually depicted in the classical Greek style, like Kratos. Strongmen don’t usually get the spotlight, so most people aren’t going to recognize it on sight.
I have to disagree when they say idris alba is the best voice actor of cyberpunk. I fully believe it’s Cherami Leigh (female V). I usually play male characters when given the choice. But after hearing her in the demo the studio showed us I ended up playing as the female version of V. I was so drawn in by her acting. The emotion she brought to the character had me fully immersed in the game feeling the highs and the lows the character was experiencing. So much so I played a second play through as the male version to compare and after an hour I felt he did well but nowhere near as well as Cherami Leigh. So I restated my second play through as the female V again. She absolutely nailed it and I can’t picture that game without her being the voice actor. Everyone did a great job in this game. Even minor characters. But Cherami Leigh as V brought it to a whole new level of immersion.
yea gotta agree smh and I didnt even do a full female v play through. male v wasn't bad but when you compare his kind of "cool" sometimes forced cool to female v's full range of human emotion it kinda feels like they didnt get the same direction when reading lines lmao
Fully agree. I enjoyed doing a male V play through first then did a female one following that. While enjoyed the first one I just feel she hit that tone of Night City so much better
Agreed. Her voice acting created that insane feedback loop in my soul where I felt how I would say it, and then she did it exactly like that and it created this positive enforcing interference pulling me even deeper into the character. But I think the video is more about the "whole package" of mocap and voice, and naturally we don't have that with V, the game being first person and all. And also I feel in terms of pure voice acting Minji Chang as So Mi also needs to be mentioned, she's right up there with the big stars and Cherami Leigh.
The God of War 2018 and Ragnarok story is genius. Did you play 2018 as a kid then Ragnarok as a teen? You can identify with Atreus. If you are older like me and grew up playing the originals? You identify with Kratos. It really is brilliant story design.

I think companies like Ubisoft are failing to realize that their games are being judged as art as well as a game. And if it is bad art we don’t want to play. When the writing, acting, music and visuals all hit it is amazing.
I think the bigger problem is something Skill Up has pointed out. They start with the structure and build around that. It seems like they always want to start by assuming that there will be different regions - each with their own set of characters - that the player can visit in any order, which means you have to do shorter story blocks that can loosely fit into a bigger narrative. AC Valhalla has regions to pacify, Star Wars Outlaws has the 3 planets where you gather your heist allies, and I believe Far Cry 6 requires you to go to different spots on the map to recruit new allies. On the flip side, RDR 2 (while still an open-world game) structures things in such a way that even side missions speak to the same themes and character development the main game does (such as the "Money Laundering and Other Sins" mission set). Ubisoft games seem to contain moments where they show they're capable of good storytelling, but they just hamstring themselves with their loose structure.
Half of the games here are on my "Need to play" list and I'm so happy about it! I don't play much these days and I appreciate games with awesome story, with moments that give you chills, make you reflect, or just leave you saying "wow, that's sick!" Some games are pure art!
Nothing will beat *Grand Theft Auto IV* and the *Red Dead Redemption,* at least in my opinion. All three games are the *definition* of interactive entertainment, and are most cinematic experiences I've had.
Zurcon Jr from Rachet & Clank Rift Apart also had a good voice actor. I recognised his voice from Invader Zim. And he kept that explosive energy. Especially in the Arena.
One of my favorite moments in Ragnarok cinematography wise, is one of the times that Kratos and Atreus are separated. Kratos sets his knife down on a table or tree stump, and as the camera focuses in on the knife; Atreus picks up his identical knife on a similar stump or whatever it was. Just brilliant camera work
@@MrWizardGGI think most would be glad they aren’t friends with you anyway. Get your head out your *** like your opinion is the only one that’s right. I pity any friends you do have as they must be stupid
100% agreed. Cinematically it's probably on top for me, even above the games on this list I've played. I think the change in game play distracted a lot from just how good the cinematics in this game are.
Not everyone else. Aiden is a well written character that people just didn't understand. Watch dogs 1 can still give new AAA games a run for their money.
I agree. #1 and #2 should have been between Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn. I haven't played all the games I want to yet, but so far HZD hands down has the best gut punching story. These two games should have been on that list.
And then Uncharted 4. Wow did it really sell some awesome gut punch moments! Like tender moments between Drake and his wife Elena (awesome voice choice of Emily Rose from Haven). Like when they rode together in the jeep after a marriage discussion and that tender piano music was playing. Left me contemplative mood along with them!
Great video idea! Very pleasant to watch (although a bit spoilery for big games still in backlog, but fair enough^^). The mix of commentary and gameplay section was really nice. Thx!
The ending in the Red Dead Redemption still is one of the best endings ever, still one of my favourites. And MGS snake eater is probably one greatest video game ever, has to be in the top ten.
I feel like quantum break could have been amazing... If any of the choices actually did something. It had a very fun story, but every option leads to no difference, except in that exact cutscene, which doesn't change anything. Not even the next cutscene.
Well... Pathologic 2 made me cry a lot, out of anger, and out of sadness for some of the chatacter, way more impactfull than most of the movies i've watched
It's weird to argue with you, considering there are movies out there that make me cry, but some usually come closer to being animated than films. However, a lot more games give me more emotions than movies have. And yeah, Tell Tale the walking dead is one of them.
Too bad they didn't bother to refine or innovate on other aspects of the game. Then again ff never was that impressive. Easily the most overrated franchise in gaming.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is not only my favorite piece of Star Wars media ever for the story, but is an objectively incredibly written story that deserves a heck of a lot more praise than it has. I was pretty surprised you didn't have it anywhere on this list.
Yeah it's weird how that game got so much hate but it was as good as Jedi Fallen Order. In fact the score point are 3 percent lower in metacritic and open critic.
Definitely needs a part 2. Assassin's creed ezio trilogy deserves to be on the list. They were such cinematic masterpieces that later AC games were never able to reach that height.
For me it's Beyond: Two Souls, Quantum Break, Detroit Become Human, Telltales first Walking Dead, Mafia Definitive edition, GTA 5. Both Alan Wake games are up there too
Honorable mention, Mafia 1. I rarely see the game on this channel but I played it almost 7 months ago and it has been on my mind for a long time. The game is so brilliant.
Best GR vid for a while!! 🔥 definitely need a part 2. I absolutely love these types of games, where amazing storytelling and setting meets great gameplay 👌🏻
Alan wake 2 is wayyyyy better game. Especially the actual story. Sure characters can be sad when they die but that’s not what makes a good story, that just makes a compelling one.😊
@@SoimyAW2 is not better, but it is much more intimate and focused. You couldn't build something as big as RDR2 with the level of detail given to everything in AW2.

I think Helldivers 2 should have replaced Wolfenstein IMO. Or at least should have had an honorable mention. Helldivers 2 gives the bombastic over the top action scenes that are completely organic and unscripted. There’s nothing wrong with cutscenes making the game more cinematic but it’s rare that the gameplay itself is more cinematic than most movies.

A Plage tale: Requiem not on the list is a crime. The acting, the VA, the cutscenes had me on the edge of my seat at all times.
I think cyberpunk is one of the best games EVER MADE. and phantom liberty just made it 10x better
Metro Exodus? Some of those train scenes are so wholesome.
Half of the games here are on my "Need to play" list and I'm so happy about it! I don't play much these days and I appreciate games with awesome story, with moments that give you chills, make you reflect, or just leave you saying "wow, that's sick!"
Some games are pure art!
Your going to love them, all the games on this list are great.
Alan wake 2 is a masterpiece of mixed media. Remedy as a developer is truly something special.
Solid pick right there!
0:55 Mongol invasion isn't complicated enough?!
Everyone needs to send this to Sony, to remind them what made them great. No more live services, we need single player games of this caliber.
SoMi’s final request legit drew tears. It was so well done and she was such a complex character
The Witcher 3 was a fantastic story and game.
Nothing will beat *Grand Theft Auto IV* and the *Red Dead Redemption,* at least in my opinion. All three games are the *definition* of interactive entertainment, and are most cinematic experiences I've had.
Bro you named my most favourite 3 ❤
Cool, I agree, but you mentioned 2/3. Whats the third? :)
@@KontrashKontrashevic RDR2
Witcher 3 wild hunt performances can give any entertainment media a run for its money
The fact that Halo: Reach is not on this list is criminal.
Zurcon Jr from Rachet & Clank Rift Apart also had a good voice actor. I recognised his voice from Invader Zim. And he kept that explosive energy. Especially in the Arena.
I'm a biased 43 year old. Only Last of Us comes close. Love you guys.
Batman arkham games deserved a mention
One of my favorite moments in Ragnarok cinematography wise, is one of the times that Kratos and Atreus are separated. Kratos sets his knife down on a table or tree stump, and as the camera focuses in on the knife; Atreus picks up his identical knife on a similar stump or whatever it was. Just brilliant camera work
Opening statement nailed it. I’ll take a great game like Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man, Cyberpunk or God of War over film any day.
Honestly one of the cringiest opinion there is. Very glad you aren't one of my friends. Trash taste.
@@MrWizardGG 🤣🤣🤣no one cares what an in cel fa ci st thinks🤡
Why not both? There are amazing stories in all forms of media.
@@MrWizardGGI think most would be glad they aren’t friends with you anyway. Get your head out your *** like your opinion is the only one that’s right. I pity any friends you do have as they must be stupid
There are hundreds of movies MUCH more unforgettable than any of the games you listed, you gotta expand your horizons son 😂 what a crazy ass opinion
Sony is gonna rule this list.
21:09 he’s so good in better call saul
For sure
What’s funny is that’s actually how the Vikings pictured Thor
Final Fantasy XVI is spectacle after spectacle after spectacle. I’m slowing going through it and loving EVERY minute…
100% agreed. Cinematically it's probably on top for me, even above the games on this list I've played. I think the change in game play distracted a lot from just how good the cinematics in this game are.
RDR2 being put all the way down at #7 is criminal.
Guess I missed where you mentioned Bioshock
No uncharted 2 is CRIMINAL
Uncharted 4 is also
Love these games! I think Watch Dogs 1 is also a good one. But everyone else thought Aiden was a bland character
He's probably the best character
Not everyone else. Aiden is a well written character that people just didn't understand. Watch dogs 1 can still give new AAA games a run for their money.
Also mafia 1 had one of the best stories in games
I was a big fan of Aiden to. His bland personality is what made him stand out for me
Number 1) should be Uncharted 4
I agree. #1 and #2 should have been between Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn. I haven't played all the games I want to yet, but so far HZD hands down has the best gut punching story. These two games should have been on that list.
@@fischerbj 💯
And then Uncharted 4. Wow did it really sell some awesome gut punch moments! Like tender moments between Drake and his wife Elena (awesome voice choice of Emily Rose from Haven). Like when they rode together in the jeep after a marriage discussion and that tender piano music was playing. Left me contemplative mood along with them!
@@fischerbjInteresting that HZD resonated with you so much. The story and VO work in that game were the main downsides for me.
No mention of gaunter o'dim and the witcher 3? Truly unfortunate!
Its difficult to believe that Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is not on this list.
I'm a simple fella, I see new gameranx video, I hit like immediately while watching
Great video idea! Very pleasant to watch (although a bit spoilery for big games still in backlog, but fair enough^^). The mix of commentary and gameplay section was really nice. Thx!
Hey thanks for watching! :)
The ending in the Red Dead Redemption still is one of the best endings ever, still one of my favourites. And MGS snake eater is probably one greatest video game ever, has to be in the top ten.
Yess snake eater
Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West had a story that sticks with you
I feel like quantum break could have been amazing... If any of the choices actually did something. It had a very fun story, but every option leads to no difference, except in that exact cutscene, which doesn't change anything. Not even the next cutscene.
Agree
Also optimization was poor
it was a good concept and had fun gameplay elements but the execution was poor sadly.
Inception:- I am the most confusing movies
Cod bo3,metal gear solid all games:- hold our Guns
No game has yet to make me ugly cry like some films have, but gaming has provided me more jaw dropping moments for sure
Well... Pathologic 2 made me cry a lot, out of anger, and out of sadness for some of the chatacter, way more impactfull than most of the movies i've watched
Then you need to play Telltales The Walking Dead. That will do it for sure 😢
It's weird to argue with you, considering there are movies out there that make me cry, but some usually come closer to being animated than films. However, a lot more games give me more emotions than movies have. And yeah, Tell Tale the walking dead is one of them.
Dom from Gears 3 and Sarah from TLOU is tear jerking.
The side mission with the grandma in Ghost of Tsushima made me cry
Alan Wake 2 has tuned out to be a fantastic October game.
FF16 is one epic story/cinematic experience.. it always blows my mind the amount of work the big SP games must twke
is it better than FF7 remake?
Too bad they didn't bother to refine or innovate on other aspects of the game. Then again ff never was that impressive. Easily the most overrated franchise in gaming.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is not only my favorite piece of Star Wars media ever for the story, but is an objectively incredibly written story that deserves a heck of a lot more praise than it has. I was pretty surprised you didn't have it anywhere on this list.
Star Wars Outlaws got some credit, finally.
Yeah it's weird how that game got so much hate but it was as good as Jedi Fallen Order. In fact the score point are 3 percent lower in metacritic and open critic.
10 best game directors and designers of all time. Seriously they deserve more respect than we give them.
Can’t wait for Ghost of Yotei and see another beautiful open world.
👍
Ghost of tampon
Definitely needs a part 2. Assassin's creed ezio trilogy deserves to be on the list. They were such cinematic masterpieces that later AC games were never able to reach that height.
Definitely not. You can't tell me the generic story AC2 was better then 1, 3, 4,Unity, Orgins, and Valhalla.
"Videogames are kind of like the movies of today, right?"
No. *Movies* are the movies of today.
Fantastic writing as always from you guys.
Did you listen for 2 more seconds to hear him say that exact thing? Idiot.
Hahaha it's funny cuz you say its fantastic but it clearly isn't fantastic because of the reason you listed.
@@MrWizardGG right? Almost like Gameranx writes garbage and can't take sarcasm.
Best GR vid for a while!! 🔥 definitely need a part 2. I absolutely love these types of games, where amazing storytelling and setting meets great gameplay 👌🏻
Let me guess - they all are PlayStation games
frr
lol right?🙄
Just like ghost of tshushina is now available for windows others will be too..... EVENTUALLY
Your guess is wrong
Hahaha it's funny cuz Sony games are just movies!!!
Ashley Johnson is an absolute gem. I'm also a Critical Role fan, and she is amazing on that channel too, along with the rest of the cast.
Did we miss any games that we should have featured?
How rdr2 is not number 1 is KRAAAZZZYYY
Arthur alone makes it number one. Seriously can't think of a video game character or fictional character I like better than him.
@@richardchase2960 I think this is not a top.
I agree but as long as RDR2 is on the list then I'm okay with it
Alan wake 2 is wayyyyy better game.
The Story of Chrono Trigger stayed with me after playing and finishing it as a child. Im 42 now and i can play out the story in my mind. A good story never leaves your memory.
Alan Wake 2 is a perfect example - although I think Alan Wake 1 is much better. 🙈
I played 2 and was perfect. I never played 1st game but I guess I must cos I hear a lot that its good
I liked 2 better than 1 nyself
@@MrWizardGG did you like Alan Wake's American Nightmare?
@@MrWizardGG ofc u do 😂😂😂😂games arent for u kid, also Learn basic english 🤣
@@VideoGames_NerdSectionAmerican nightmare is great but much too short.
Everything on one side TH-cam and gameranx videos on other side ❤❤
I think Helldivers 2 should have replaced Wolfenstein IMO. Or at least should have had an honorable mention. Helldivers 2 gives the bombastic over the top action scenes that are completely organic and unscripted. There’s nothing wrong with cutscenes making the game more cinematic but it’s rare that the gameplay itself is more cinematic than most movies.
They really just said “Fuck them spoiler warnings” with this one, huh?
FF16 is the best one
I think Mafia 1 and 2 deserves to be in this video as bonus games.
How just how is none of the MGS games mentioned on this (we don’t count 5) but 1-4?! How is none of those on this list just how?! They are the epitome of cinematic games.
I had to scroll depressingly far down the list to find mention of Metal Gear, so thanks for that. Nobody cared about story in games before Metal Gear Solid came along.
I agree n it's criminal that like a dragon yakuza games is not on here
Aah, Cinematic Games. The pinnacle of gaming. This is why I often regard games as the highest form of art. 🙌🏻
Thank me later:
10. Ghost of Tsushima
9. God of War Ragnarok
8. Cyberpunk 2077
7. Red dead redemption 2
6. Last of us
5. Star Wars fallen order
4. Spiderman
3. Wolfenstein 2
2. Far cry 3
1. Alan Wake
Thank you, but some titles are not correct.
Games tell magnificent stories and people are starting to realize it's a wonderful form of art and expression. The gaming industry is even doing better than Hollywood financially!
What games are on your radar to pick up next?
4:45 bro dude had a booze/strongman gut 🤦♂️ also LITERALLY how he’s depicted. Get off of marvel.
I'm beginning to think most norse fans are illiterate; and if not, they can't delineate between mythology and fantasy.
God of War Ragnarok, depicts Thor closer to how he is described in the Edda, than Marvel ever did. It's a great depiction
Rdr2>>>>>>>whole universe
The Witcher 3 comes to mind. Especially the portrayal of Gaunter O'Dimm. That one stuck with me. He was so unsettling in every interaction that when I finally came to the climax against him, my hands were sweating. Superb.
Dom was great in gears of war 2. Him talking to Maria. That perormance is still in my head all these years later. "We did it Maria!" ...aw man.
The first Last of Us game is still one of the best videogames I've ever played and replayed. It's one game where I sat down in the end and felt empty. And I wish they would've left Joel and Ellie alone for the sequel.
i want to be better. i feel a lot of pain about all the mistakes ive made. the things ive done. the people ive hurt. but what difference does it make if i just keep doing it? things keep ending badly, i keep finding ways to justify it. its all talk. i need to change if i want things to change.
related to your analysis of idris’ character a lot. thanks falcon
You may need to make another video about this. Ha! Plague's tale, Senua's saga, any of the newer Resident evils, and the dark pictures games could make this kind of list. Thanks for another fun video!
Great choices there! Thanks for watching! :)
Games are movies, just better. 😍
Arthur saying his final goodbye to Tilly will NEVER get old. That shit still gives me the chills and make my eyes water 😭
