Don't feel bad, I'm an American that played soccer (football) through college and only found out today! I had tried to look it up before but watching "welcome to wrexham" got me here. I always thought it was related to "Captain" and that never worked with the number of caps so many had. I'll never be ashamed to admit I've learned something new. I'm 42 years old btw, never stop learning and evolving

Do they make caps for every single appearance a player makes or is it for special occasions. Otherwise, that's alot of caps!

altec360 Yep, a cap for every appearance. Blue is standard. Gold only as it was the 100th game for England. I believe you get them at most levels for England (u21, youth, schoolboy etc) - as far as I know.
I have seen/read though that in the past, sometimes the players only got one cap for a 'tournament' (e.g. the European Championships) - I don't know if that's still the case (but was going back a bit - maybe the 1970's - I suppose they've a bit more money now!).
There's a news story out in the last couple of weeks, that John Terry only got his last cap for England the other day, nearly 2 years after earning it (but then him & the FA don't exactly 'get on'?)

altec360 I remember a picture of Bobby Charlton with all of his, he had dozens & dozens! (Officially won 106).
