This is my biggest issue with the episode. I get that Riker would still need to render aid despite not knowing anything about the Pakleds, but why oh why would you send your chief engineer alone?! No security accompaniment?! That's where the writing really face planted. At least send two security goons with him and have the Pakleds subdue them somehow

Worf as the security chief is also spouting concerns and they just send Geordi over alone. No wonder Riker isn't captain yet!

It's world building, it's good to bring in characters that are new and not have everything revolve around just the small cast that we know. You've got to remember Gates MCFadden was persona non grata for being a "troublemaker". the showrunner hated her - no way they'd bring her back for a cameo.
I watched the show when it aired, putting aside the behind-the-scenes issues, while McFadden was loved by the rest of the cast, the general audience's response to Crusher, as well as fans was mediocre at best... I'd say she was just as much disliked as liked, if not more so...and thus, when Diana Muldaur(Much more well-known and proven actress) arrived, a lot of the fans were happy to see a female version of Bones. These guys' ridiculous hatred of the Pulaski character is just weird.
The showrunner didn’t like Gates because she wouldn’t sleep with him… or so the rumor went And Pulaski was grossly unpopular on Usenet (think Quora or Reddit only text only)… she was Bones without the charm. Her distaste for Data was far beyond the friendly teasing Bones would do for Spock… it was downright hostile and some even called it racist of a sort. By this point, the writers tried to soften her abrasiveness but it was too late, people couldn’t get over how she treated fan favorite Data
This was the episode where they stated that the Klingons joined the Federation, then Gene and/or the writers decided to walk back that decision later and show the Klingons as a separate empire from the Federation.
I never got the impression from "Farpoint" to now that the Klingons were a member; we just have a nonhostile relationship or weak alliance. I've always attributed this to a sloppy mistake made during a writers' strike.
So the episode where the Enterprise recuses the rogue Klingons when the Enterprise is in contact with the Klingon ship you see not only the Klingon insignia behind but the Federation symbol as well giving the impression the Empire has joined the Federation.
A mid episode for sure, while the Pakleds were at least different kind of threat to the crew of the Enterprise my favourite part of that plot was that it's the bond between the crew that allowed them to win through. The bond that comes from poker games and eating Rikers awful eggs and playing on the holodeck. Best scene is Picard and Wesley struggling to get along and finding a groove, with Picards amazing story.
Never mind the Borg, this is the species intro we've been waiting for 🧠🧠

Shoots LaForge so nonchalantly, "request denied" ZZZAP!!!!
The Pakled is on the right in the thumbnail 😊
Grebnedlog is Goldenberg spelled backwards, the Pakleds were created by Robert McCullogh, whose real name is Goldenberg.
The showrunner didn’t like Gates because she wouldn’t sleep with him… or so the rumor went
And Pulaski was grossly unpopular on Usenet (think Quora or Reddit only text only)… she was Bones without the charm. Her distaste for Data was far beyond the friendly teasing Bones would do for Spock… it was downright hostile and some even called it racist of a sort. By this point, the writers tried to soften her abrasiveness but it was too late, people couldn’t get over how she treated fan favorite Data
I forgot Gomez was in this one, since I've never bothered to rewatch it.
Enterprise: You awake?
Packleds: Request denied!
Packleds: /block Enterprise
Riker: 😮
The Pakleds have definitely become satire the rise of the anti-science crowd.
Imagine Picard got Jack Crusher unalived just to get to Beverly
this episode would've been perfect if the final reveal was not dr. pulaski, but a pakled surgeon.
Yeah....this was the year of the long writer's strike. That's all you need to know about how/why this made it to air.
Request denied! Request denied!! Has me rolling.
Yes Riker, meanwhile, we have a great timeshare deal for you!
3:55 You keep what u kill.
I want a counter for all the times Worf was right and they ignored him.
I've seen a video on TH-cam where somebody clipped every time he got shot down in the entire series. It's a lot.
