    Do I have to split the p-value in half to interpret the significance of the post-hoc comparisons?

      Post hoc tests are carried out in an exploratory fashion, so you aren't testing directional hypotheses (and you wouldn't be splitting p in half). If you were following up your test with targeted planned contrasts that involved a directional hypothesis then this would be something you could do.
