- Until my new music is ready for release later this year, I want to share some of my previous work on Mondays and Fridays here on this channel. Today's selection is "Eyes Wide Open."
I wrote Eyes Wide Open in 2014 as a favor to a friend who asked me to score his short film. I remember spending 2 solid weeks on the music and thinking it was the biggest waste of time I'd ever committed to simply because the music felt so similar throughout - monotonous. I played the score for a few friends to get their opinions - perhaps I was wrong about my judgment... One of them fell asleep while listening and the other interrupted the music to tell me about his day. Things were not looking good...
I told Brooke (now my wife) I needed her help recording some vocals - something to lift the whole thing...and I'm glad she said yes - there's so much life in her voice. A week later I was visiting friends in Seattle and I recorded a small cello ensemble there - the strings brought out an entirely new dimension.
It's not until now - 9 years later - that I can listen back and appreciate the little details in this piece...details that I wish were present in my current music. I sometimes wonder what's happened to my writing - "have I fallen asleep?" Eyes Wide Open was simply me having fun. When I hear it, I smile. It's an invitation to return to the childlikeness I use to approach music with.

I heard this song and Journey a lot around the time I met my wife. It will always bring such a special feeling to my heart. Probably shed a tear or two as well. We have been married almost 6 years now, just had our second kiddo. This song is one of the most special songs I've ever heard.

Just like vertigo2259 said, this was the first song I ever heard of yours. It instantly became my favorite after the first listen and it introduced me to the rest of your work. It's like it's telling you a beautiful story of life but summarized into a marvelous music piece. And to me that's what makes it the best.
I first heard it by chance. I got a new 4K TV and wanted to test the screen so I looked up some TH-cam videos and got a "Peru 8K" video from "Jacob + Katie Schwarz" as the first result and I never regret clicking on it because it has Eyes Wide Open playing in the background!

this is honestly one of the best s-......THE BEST song I have ever heard, I have dearly admired your work ever since Mr. Anderson!!! and I read your description about you thinking that there are some things present in this song that are not present in your current writings? I beg to disagree, I feel like you are consistent with your quality and its honestly some of the finest work I have seen out there, if you are open to advice however, I do play piano and I write songs too, just try to "fly" with your mind, take your imagination to places you've never dreamed of, then dump those emotions into beautiful notes, chords, and arrangements, I really hope this might inspire you to continue the beautiful music you have always done, I have been a gigantic fan ever since I can remember, thank you!!
