Liquid aeration is just another tool in the box. You don’t have to love it or hate it. Is it magical? Is it perfect? No. Does it work? Many can attest I’m sure and John’s data looks good. Is mechanical aeration beneficial? In certain situations yes. Does it have its limitations? Yes. Can it be detrimental to mycelial networks? Yes. Can it impose compaction on your soil......yes. These are not the only two methods in which to build root mass and provide for water penetration and gas exchange in our soil. That is provided by soil biota.....but I digress. This is nature, not politics, no one said you had to choose a side. Get out in your yard get your hands dirty, leave the debates to whether or not liquid aeration is snake oil to the internet zeitgeist. Thanks John for putting rubber to the road. Love the stuff. I tried D-Thatch for the first time last year, during the summer, when it reached 85 degrees (Keep in mind I've been using RGS, Air-8, and Humic 12). I had a spot on my front lawn strip. I had leaves from the fall the previous year that was packed into the top soil, making it difficult for the water to penetrate in that area, causing it to go yellow. I sprayed D-Thatch and in 2 weeks that area greened up and was getting great water to soil penetration. That stuff works. I swear by it to get rid of your compaction, just like I swear by Air 8. I mixed both of D-Thatch and Air 8 together the next time and the results were even better. Great products. Well worth the money.
Been following LCN for years and I can't believ TH-cam only recommended your channel to me just today. Thank you for the information I have so much catching up to do. A few weeks ago I pickup the Air-8 and RGS compaction cure combo and now I am getting grass to grow in areas I never could because of heavily compacted clay. Really impressed!
Can't wait to hear more! I started using the biostim pack last spring. Applying at 3oz per thousand monthly. When I started, I could only get a screwdriver about 2" into the ground. By August I could get the screwdriver 6" into the ground even after 10 days without rain. It works!
Hello, On one side of my lawn it is a little hilly and I first mechanical aerate that part of my lawn a couple of years ago then use air 8. Now I do not use the mechanical aeration just Air 8 and it works perfect! I thought by putting down Air8 it will just wash down so I mechanical aeration out down Air 8 to get in the soil.
I’m starting my second full year using N-Ext products and have seen tremendous root growth since applying RGS and Air8 on a consistent basis. Combine that with Humic12 and you get long roots shedding themselves twice a year which add OM to your soil, all without mechanical aeration and potentially incurring carbon loss & bringing some weed seeds to the surface. I am a big fan of Air 8 and RGS. I purchase a 5 gallon build a box of the Compaction Cure Combo in the spring and in the fall. Over the last 3 years, my hard Texas clay soil has become noticeably less hard, and the Bermuda lawn is becoming thicker and more dense. In addition, I haven't had to change out a sprinkler head due to aeration in a long time!!
I used Airr8 last spring on a section of my lawn that was so compact nothing would grow there despite all my efforts. After using this product I now have grass growing in this area and my soil is not looking like pavement anymore. I did “paint that section black’ with Humic12 as well.... all I know is I have grass growing and flourishing in a section of my lawn that I couldn’t get anything to grow in the past 10 yrs.
West Texas here I’m using all N-ext products. Haven’t even used fertilizer this spring and I’m 85% green. It’s been nice to just spray and watch it,Look so healthy. FYI I barely started doing my own yard work last May. It’s been a full 360. Thanks for the N-ext products.
It absolutely does work. I over seeded last fall and I have an area that is usually thin and crappy. I overseeded, everything was growing and looking good except this area. It wasn’t growing as tall, it was stubby. So I put an extra extra amount on that area and bingo it helped, it grew, it survived. I was very happy!!! And of course I use it regularly throughout the lawn but this area is just more difficult.
Hey John! You’ll love this if you want to add to your reasons for liquid aeration. After I had to redo a lawn over a year ago because Take All Patch took it out, I decided to go with subsurface drip throughout the lawn. Before putting it down, I mechanically aerated to break soil compaction. The drip is only 4ish inches below the surface, so no more plunging spikes into the ground 5inches. This forced me to find another solution to continue aeration and decompaction. I didn’t know that liquid aeration existed until I went looking for it. Sorry, but info from you like this never popped up or I’d been all over it like I am now. What was showing came from companies dealing with golf course compaction and run off issues. I contacted one directly and they helped me with enough sample of their commercial product. Liquid aeration works! Now I’ve always wondered if other products would yield different results. Air8 is new to me. No I haven’t been living under a rock, I just stopped looking for a solution while I had enough sample product, but since I need a new solution, I’ll be going with your Air8. I look forward to working with it!
I’m doing 552 lawns with 28-0-0, air-8 and Seak. We typically do 2 applications of Air-8 per season at the 6oz rate. Say what you will but I get results and have amazing customer retention because of GFC products.

I maintain 45000sq ft of bermuda that two years ago was flat rock and compacted clay. I brought in over 30 loads of dirt and some of it was heavy clay. I could not got the turf to fill in and grow aggressively. So i started reading and found GCF's product and have used them exclusively for two years now. My lawn looks so good and the bermuda is thick and dense. I just did my first spring spray with 2.5 gallons of air8 and 2.5 gallons of RGS. Love me some black goodness! Hi. Im new to caring for my lawn. Oooo, I love watching your videos!!! It is so much i love, but i think what i enjoy the most, is your voice🥰🥰🥰. Im in Indiana cool season. I have liquid aerated. Im going to overseed here shortly. What im most nervous about is putting my fertilizer. Ive never done it before. I bought a broadcast and a drop spreader. Im much older and i don't walk very fast. Which one do think would be best. I like using the hose n sprayer, i can dial it low when i put down the arearation and the humic acid. I had to go over several times. But didn't run out to product too fast. Thank you for your help🥰🥰 Carolyn

By my calculations pulling 24 1/2" cores per square feet with a mechanical aeration process will immediately eliminate roughly 3.5% of the thatch layer. Use mechanical twice a year and 7% is gone in one season. Not bad. I look forward to hearing more from your results, in particular air8 + rgs + mechanical aeration, my guess that would represent huge gains in root development 💪
I’ve been recommending liquid aeration and mechanical aeration for the “best of both worlds” benefits to water/product infiltration, compaction, root growth, and water/air exchange... good to see these results! Any chance the study is published online? Would love to dive into it!
This is the first video I have found that even talked about mechanical aeration plus liquid aeration. I live by some fair grounds and we park over 300 vehicles on our TTTF lawn over 6 days. I use liquid aeration right after and the turf bounces back. I have some die back on spots that receive the most traffic. This past week, just aerated mechanically, over-seeded and then followed with another treatment of liquid aeration. Why not take advantage of the plugs/holes in the ground to allow liquid aeration penetrate deeper? Glad to see actual research happening and others doing this as well. I hope for better results. I live in zone 4b with very sandy soil in the upper Midwest.
Ph.D Biochemist here. I tried this 'product' last year in a localized trial (different spots). Per the label rate using a calibrated sprayer. Other equipment; AgraTronix penetrometer on my loamy soil. There were no differences between this 'product' and a placebo (which was deionized tapwater). Penetrometer showed the same compaction, in the entire treated area vs untreated. I didn't measure water penetration into the soil or measure water flow viscoty/%/etc. You claimed there's a trial, where is the trial? What's the DOI/Citation?
Reach out to me and I can provide you with the trial reps and measurements. READ THROUGH THE DESCRIPTION. The greatest changes in compaction relief occurred in subsoil when combined with mechanical aeration compared to aeration alone. Drainage and upper soil compaction releasing was attained in the upper two inches of the soil. The summary concluded that greater impact could be made at deeper levels if the material could get deeper into the ground (hence the measurable penetrometer difference when compared to aeration alone)
I’m very curious about the how the effects of the two methods affect soil biology. I would imagine that retaining the original soil would lead to a healthier “microbiome” than introducing inert material. As far as the measurable in this study are concerned it seems like these two methods are pretty equitable. From a whole ecosystem perspective (not just the grass) I wonder how these two methods compare.
You bring up a great point that I wanted to get into in the next video. I’ve had this conversation with soil and turf professors and there are some interesting consideration. Namely, the reduction or displacement of soil will absolutely reduce the microbiome population
@@krusej23 you’ll want to check the source on why a particular comment was made. Perhaps there is more going on. Prof Henry works with a multitude of large and small fertilizer and chemical companies as well as breeders for new varieties of turfgrass. Bias would only be toward the quality of ones work and the services provided. Not toward a company or individual unless perhaps there is history with a company or individual the predates what you may have seen.
@@krusej23 I can’t speak to that, but again, there’s presumption and bias on only your part right now. Was there perhaps someone making unwarranted claims prior to this statement? It’s not for any of us to know. I imagine based on my experience with him that there was a larger history going on. Maybe that was enough to get resolution.
Great information, waiting for next installment. I need to seed and fertilize now, can I also use Air8, will it help? I had mechanical aeration and seeding in November with no effect on my mostly bear lawn? they got canceled.
I think he may be stretching the use of the word study, or he maybe doesn’t understand what an actual study is, but I suspect these were just monitored test plots and not a true study/trial. Don’t hold your breath for any useful data and certainly not a published paper.

@@davidhensel7666 It is possible it was a properly conducted study. But my experience says likely not. I’m big into gardening and extension offices often get into these ‘test plot’ studies, and the results are usually widely panned as useless as there are too many problems with how they are conducted and they are rarely, if ever, published for peer review.
We will publish at the end of the 2 year study. The study is being conducted at UGA, not an extension office and with the data being controlled by prof Henry. He has actually used some data from this study in a turf summit earlier this year. I will break into more of the data points as the series continues, but in the end when everything is complete and all stats are analyzed, the published paper could be specific to one or two functions, not every recorded piece that we are doing.

No point. It does no good to correct people misstatements about products, assumptions or anything else when a person can read the label and see that what the person is talking about is all wrong. And… most videos that challenge things on TH-cam are meant to get a rose out of people just to get views.
With enough water. Yes. Start with the water (one gallon) mix 6 ounces of air8 first then 6 ounces dthatch. That will do 1000ft in most back pack sprayers and then water it in.

@@kajuan2g6 this is not intended to be any sort of rebuttal, it’s just facts of use with an actual comparison. The study was going on before the other video was released and perhaps it was made to gain more attention rather than be a truly accurate representation. I think that most of the video is spot on except for some claims that were made. Digesting ingredients as proof of efficacy one way or another does not attest to the overall function of said product. Actual trials are needed to come up with a true or false claim that could be considered accurate.

I used rgs and micro green upon laying the sod as well as starter fert. Very sandy soil with lots of silt that compacts like a mo fo. Thanks again

Good info, JP.. mechanical aeration is almost impossible for me in my area.. no one rents their aerators and charges too much $$ for the service. Question... has anyone here had any results by offering the soil a shot of whiskey to get it to loosen up a little?
If anyone can help my soil is really compacted , I have used it three times already .I still haven’t seen any improvement. The soil is pretty much 100% native soil . If any one can help . Do I have to do it once a week or apply more or does it take a while for it to begin functioning ?
@@Lawncology i use a rate of 6 oz sometimes more about 8 for three weeks now. I tried doing deep watering less days but I can’t do for that many minutes because i end up with puddles and runs off because water doesn’t penetrate

I’ve been using a 4 product combo for 4 years (in my 4th year)…. Liquid aerate 8 is in the combo…. What I can say my worms in my yard are like snakes… big ole fuckers I’ve had at least 5 people tell me they’ve never seen worms that big before and I’d agree except worms for fishing in containers.
Would you recommend D-Thatch for a 3 year old sodded KBG lawn that has normal amounts of thatch build up? Or leave it as is and feed micro nutrients instead

I do use the Air8 product and not sure how much it has impacted my soil or not, but this video makes me wonder if I should still use a mechanical aeration technique instead. Hi. Im new to caring for my lawn. Oooo, I love watching your videos!!! It is so much i love, but i think what i enjoy the most, is your voice🥰🥰🥰. Im in Indiana cool season. I have liquid aerated. Im going to overseed here shortly. What im most nervous about is putting my fertilizer. Ive never done it before. I bought a broadcast and a drop spreader. Im much older and i don't walk very fast. Which one do think would be best. I like using the hose n sprayer, i can dial it low when i put down the arearation and the humic acid. I had to go over several times. Great video! I have personally never physically aerated but use Air8 and SLS Soil Loosener. Both are great products and they truly work. Can’t wait to watch the other videos.

By my calculations pulling 24 1/2" cores per square feet with a mechanical aeration process will immediately eliminate roughly 3.5% of the thatch layer. Use mechanical twice a year and 7% is gone in one season. Not bad. I look forward to hearing more from your results, in particular air8 + rgs + mechanical aeration, my guess that would represent huge gains in root development 💪
How many passes did it take you to get that many holes?

I’ve been recommending liquid aeration and mechanical aeration for the “best of both worlds” benefits to water/product infiltration, compaction, root growth, and water/air exchange... good to see these results! Any chance the study is published online? Would love to dive into it!

This is the first video I have found that even talked about mechanical aeration plus liquid aeration. I live by some fair grounds and we park over 300 vehicles on our TTTF lawn over 6 days. I use liquid aeration right after and the turf bounces back. I have some die back on spots that receive the most traffic. This past week, just aerated mechanically, over-seeded and then followed with another treatment of liquid aeration. Why not take advantage of the plugs/holes in the ground to allow liquid aeration penetrate deeper? Glad to see actual research happening and others doing this as well. I hope for better results. I live in zone 4b with very sandy soil in the upper Midwest.

I tried this 'product' last year in a localized trial (different spots). Per the label rate using a calibrated sprayer.
Other equipment; AgraTronix penetrometer on my loamy soil.
There were no differences between this 'product' and a placebo (which was deionized tapwater). Penetrometer showed the same compaction, in the entire treated area vs untreated. I didn't measure water penetration into the soil or measure water flow viscoty/%/etc.
You claimed there's a trial, where is the trial? What's the DOI/Citation?
Reach out to me and I can provide you with the trial reps and measurements. READ THROUGH THE DESCRIPTION. The greatest changes in compaction relief occurred in subsoil when combined with mechanical aeration compared to aeration alone. Drainage and upper soil compaction releasing was attained in the upper two inches of the soil. The summary concluded that greater impact could be made at deeper levels if the material could get deeper into the ground (hence the measurable penetrometer difference when compared to aeration alone)

I’m very curious about the how the effects of the two methods affect soil biology. I would imagine that retaining the original soil would lead to a healthier “microbiome” than introducing inert material. As far as the measurable in this study are concerned it seems like these two methods are pretty equitable. From a whole ecosystem perspective (not just the grass) I wonder how these two methods compare.
You bring up a great point that I wanted to get into in the next video. I’ve had this conversation with soil and turf professors and there are some interesting consideration. Namely, the reduction or displacement of soil will absolutely reduce the microbiome population
The bigger the toolbox is the better the options are!

I wouldn't trust this Dr. Henry who is doing the trial very much from what I've seen of him.
He is a very well respected researcher.
I have seen a public comment from him that seems to show an unwarranted attack.
@@krusej23 you’ll want to check the source on why a particular comment was made. Perhaps there is more going on. Prof Henry works with a multitude of large and small fertilizer and chemical companies as well as breeders for new varieties of turfgrass. Bias would only be toward the quality of ones work and the services provided. Not toward a company or individual unless perhaps there is history with a company or individual the predates what you may have seen.
@@krusej23 I can’t speak to that, but again, there’s presumption and bias on only your part right now. Was there perhaps someone making unwarranted claims prior to this statement? It’s not for any of us to know. I imagine based on my experience with him that there was a larger history going on. Maybe that was enough to get resolution.

I think he may be stretching the use of the word study, or he maybe doesn’t understand what an actual study is, but I suspect these were just monitored test plots and not a true study/trial. Don’t hold your breath for any useful data and certainly not a published paper.

It is possible it was a properly conducted study. But my experience says likely not. I’m big into gardening and extension offices often get into these ‘test plot’ studies, and the results are usually widely panned as useless as there are too many problems with how they are conducted and they are rarely, if ever, published for peer review.
We will publish at the end of the 2 year study. The study is being conducted at UGA, not an extension office and with the data being controlled by prof Henry. He has actually used some data from this study in a turf summit earlier this year. I will break into more of the data points as the series continues, but in the end when everything is complete and all stats are analyzed, the published paper could be specific to one or two functions, not every recorded piece that we are doing.

I am definitely looking forward to see the final paper and go over the data, but I retract some of my skepticism over the usefulness of the data.

With enough water. Yes. Start with the water (one gallon) mix 6 ounces of air8 first then 6 ounces dthatch. That will do 1000ft in most back pack sprayers and then water it in.

@@kajuan2g6 this is not intended to be any sort of rebuttal, it’s just facts of use with an actual comparison. The study was going on before the other video was released and perhaps it was made to gain more attention rather than be a truly accurate representation. I think that most of the video is spot on except for some claims that were made. Digesting ingredients as proof of efficacy one way or another does not attest to the overall function of said product. Actual trials are needed to come up with a true or false claim that could be considered accurate.
Did you guys also do the study with the high rate of 9oz per 1000sqft? Amazing results with just the low dose of 6oz.
Do you think chemical aeration would work in assisting in soil percolating for a dry well?

I used rgs and micro green upon laying the sod as well as starter fert. Very sandy soil with lots of silt that compacts like a mo fo. Thanks again

You can do that and typically an ounce in a gallon of water if enough if you water with a can. It doesn’t take much.

Totally works. You’ll find that the deeper it can get into the soil, the better the result.

Question... has anyone here had any results by offering the soil a shot of whiskey to get it to loosen up a little?
U can use organic molasses or D thatch to allow those microbes to eat the thatch. Less work and your feeding the soil.

If anyone can help my soil is really compacted , I have used it three times already .I still haven’t seen any improvement. The soil is pretty much 100% native soil . If any one can help . Do I have to do it once a week or apply more or does it take a while for it to begin functioning ?

@@Lawncology i use a rate of 6 oz sometimes more about 8 for three weeks now. I tried doing deep watering less days but I can’t do for that many minutes because i end up with puddles and runs off because water doesn’t penetrate

Question about Air 8. Would it raise your soil ph from a 7.0 to 7.5 with label rates with a soil cec of 17?
Not a chance. That’s a significant change and would be likely due to hard water.

I’ve been using a 4 product combo for 4 years (in my 4th year)…. Liquid aerate 8 is in the combo…. What I can say my worms in my yard are like snakes… big ole fuckers I’ve had at least 5 people tell me they’ve never seen worms that big before and I’d agree except worms for fishing in containers.
I’m in the Boston area, it’s a few weeks early for preemergent but Is it too early for a humic /air-8 treatment? The ground is cold but not frozen.
It’s not too early or you can wait and do your pre-m with it as well

First by of data was one app, the second piece was 2, the final study concluded with 4. The combo of air8 and mech only had two apps

Sand soil tends to drain well on its own, in some cases too well.
I use your products and have been enjoying the results I've had with them. I do use the Air8 product and not sure how much it has impacted my soil or not, but this video makes me wonder if I should still use a mechanical aeration technique instead. They did review your Air8 product and he's very open to having a discussion about these compared to mechanical.
