  • Shannon Sharpe & Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson react to Randy Moss' recent comments stating he's the greatest wide receiver of all-time over San Francisco 49ers legend Jerry Rice. Unc is firmly in Rice's corner, but Ocho is ready to die on the hill that nobody in history compares to Moss or Terrell Owens.

There are some incredible talents who weren't able to rack up numbers for various reasons. People like Grant Hill, Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, etc... So he isn't all the way wrong. Injuries, terrible teams, terrible draft organizations among other things also contribute to great players numbers and championships. Overall I agree with Unc, but Ocho ain't 100% wrong. There are lots of GREAT raw talent individuals that ended up in not so great situations. I probably would say Jerry Rice is the best too. Not to take anything away from him but it definitely doesn't hurt to play with Joe Montana and in that system and for that organization all of those years. But yes, he still deserves all the accolades that he gets because those numbers are ridiculous even given those great circumstances.

The only thing you can do is throw rocks at Jerry, saying he had the better coaches and Quarterbacks over his career.
And that’s not even a debate.
And then say Moss had the number 1 offense of all time, twice, on different teams. That’s insane value.
But honestly, Jerry grinded so hard, it’s hard to not put him up there.

Moss and TO were more physically gifted and great at making contested throw, but the fact that rice was way lest naturally gifted and still out produced them speaks for themselves, he would just be open damn near every other play, didn’t really need contested catches. Not even saying longevity. Rice has had better single seasons, just the fact that he put up an 1800 yard season (something neither of the other two ever did) back in the 90s speaks for itself. However I see what Ochos saying too because I think Moss was a better receiver just due to his speed, size, strength hands etc, he just didn’t try as hard as rice did

Not to mention how many touchdowns moss would’ve had if silly bobbles rules & instant replay weren’t enforced the way they were in 2007. how many touchdowns could be taken from jerry with the same rules today.

Neither guy had over 300 receiving. Also, I hate to break it to you but he didn't wear gloves when he had those 22 TDs (23 total) in 12 games and he had one of his best all around seasons the year before. You have to include both the good and bad with or without instant replay...how many TDs were not counted back then when there wasn't instant replay that should have counted?!?
The West Coast offense was about efficiency with shorter passes and making something out of them which Rice was better at and why they came up with YAC. And ironically, he had more 50+ receiving TDs than Moss. Taylor also played in that same offense but here is the numbers comparison with Rice for the 9 years they played together (1987-1995).
John Taylor: 347 rec, 5,598 yards, 43 rec TDs
Jerry Rice: 807 rec, 12,626 yards, 128 rec TDs (7 rushing TDs, for good measure)

Even the eye test and skillset Jerry is still a better receiver.
The only thing Moss has over Jerry is running deep and jump balls, and mfs pretend like Jerry was a bum at it. (Jerry still has the most 50+ TD record)
    Jerry is:
    Better with hands (reliably)
Better playbook compatibility (Jerry can fit into any and every system in football without drop in production)
    Better route runner
    Better at reading defenses
    Better agility
    Better balance
Better blocker (Jerry is literally the greatest blocking receiver ever)
    Better at short passes
    Better at screens
    Better at YAC
    Better ball security
    Better at taking hard hits
    Better longevity
Better at playing across the middle
    Better in the clutch
    Better at handling pressure (playoffs)
Better at handling superior competition (Jerry can route up Primetime, that's all you need to know)
    Better conditioning
Better work ethic (NO ONE works harder than Jerry rice.)
And last of all, Jerry will never give up during a game.

It really shows in the comments, peoples football IQ.
If you're not able to look at JUST The Specimen of a Position (and take the numbers away from it) all your football IQ can go out the window.
People really look at numbers like it's the determining factor of how great somebody is🤣 its a good tool to measure forsure, but NOT the be all and all.
You have to look past the numbers at JUST the Position itself, to determine that
I'm not saying I agree or don't agree with Ocho here, but people really not understanding he's just talking about pure specimen is hilarious.
Rice and Moss were both crazy specimen of the wide receiver position.
I'd have to watch tape of their whole career to see exactly who was the better specimen overall,
which would make them the best wide receiver overall, regardless of the numbers .
People forget it's a team sport and numbers can be varied, depending on which team a wide receiver is on, and the state of the game
DB's In one generation are different from DB's than another generation.
They continuously get better so you have to factor that in too

Jerry Rice is the best receiver to ever grace a field. Discrediting Jerry is insanity to say the least.
Jerry Rice name will forever be mentioned. Unfortunately Randy & TO were dynamic & influential players. It just so happen they are not the greatest.

Jerry also played in an age where receivers were not protected and in an age we're running backs mattered....... They are all great football wise. Jerry is the goat because of his work ethic and everything that came with him.... Yes there are other receivers that were blessed with certain abilities hight weight or speed...and there have been some guys with amazingggg hands. Let's not forget Irvin, Calvin J, Carter, Tommy brown, Harrison list goes on

I get where they both are coming from but it's hard to argue with a guy who actually played the position. Your prospective is just different when you play the position and you know what it takes to play the position.

Montana never even threw for 4,000 before, with or after Jerry Rice but Rice still got his numbers. Average QBs now can pass for more because they throw more. Rice played with John Taylor in SF from 1987-1995. Look at their numbers comparison during that stretch.
John Taylor: 347 rec, 5,598 yards, 43 rec TDs
Jerry Rice: 807 rec, 12,626 yards, 128 rec TDs (7 rushing TDs, for good measure)
And who faced more double coverage?!? I guess that West Coast offense didn't help Taylor as much.

It's hard to explain... when you're wrong... LOL
Let's go outside the numbers... Jerry runs better routes, has better hands, and was more elusive after the catch than both T.O. and Randy...

Moss, TO, Rice in that order... receive is a very dependent position. Coaches or quarterback don't have to give a receiver the ball just because they don't like you. They need to factor in targets.

Calvin and Andre Johnson are up there in terms of physicality. Moss and TO could probably have passed Jerry Rice’s stats if their egos were in check.
Overall skill I’ll put Marvin Harrison in the mix….i personally believe Justin Jefferson will be in this conversation in a few years. Ocho, you could be in this conversation as well, but that damn ego cut you short my man.

Calvin gets mentions in the top 10 because his prime years were so dominant. His 2012 might be the greatest ever. But Rice, Moss and TO all had dominant peak primes. So the tiebreaker goes to whose dominance lasted longer and career achievements. Rice easily clears

The only people who say Jerry isn't the GOAT do so because he wasn't the prototype at that position. Randy and TO were bigger, faster, more athletic, but Jerry Rice simply dominated the position longer. If we are going to start saying disregard stats and accolades and look only at attributes, we are going into a dangerous
    gray area.
