I did this job on 2007 using this video. One of those oil sensors is not a part of the housing and is connected next to housing in the engine instead. However everything else was the same and having all the seal part numbers helped a lot. Mine was leaking very excessively also dripping on the exhaust causing burning oil fumes. Video was an excellent help getting this job done quickly.
My TL has been leaking oil for a few years and the whole time I thought it was the Rear Main Seal. Followed this video to replace all the gaskets along with half a bottle of AT-205 and now no leaks anywhere. It's weird how those gaskets weren't cracked or dry but still caused so much oil to leak. It's nice to not have to check the oil level every 3 days anymore.
This REALLY slowed down the oil consumption but not 100%. Or made it much easier to deal with - I was adding 1 qt per 3 months before this. Now it’s about 1 qt every 6 months. So I still need to tackle the cam shaft cover seals. I’m going to start with the front one because it’s really easy and see how that goes before looking at the back one. I’ll post a video.

The 04 has a different engine, but I believe the concept of oil filter housing still exist on that model so it’s not a bad place to look. And with the assumption of high miles at this point since that’s 20 years old, you should definitely investigate the valve cover gasket. Good luck!
Thanks for this and the part numbers. I believe have this leak but maybe some others too. My oil pan drain is stripped out and the pan may be leaking also but i do think this housing is since i get oil not only down the pan but drips down off the oil filter. So the pan is getting replaced and sealed. It was minor leaking at first. Didnt need to top up between changes, just some drips. Now im starting to have to top up. 240k miles but running strong ive maintained the car well. Its barely had any failures except a starter. Some things are starting to wear and need to be replaced like the tie rods but a real great vehicle. Just need to clean up these leaks. I plan to do the valve covers too. They are seeping but not leaking from what i can tell so far. I dont mind topping up a little oil since its so high mileage but i was oil changes without having to even check.
Found this leak while my boyfriend was dealing with the power steering pressure hose and switch 😅 also found few loose screws and one missing from around the engine 😢.. we are now just waiting for the sensor since for sure is also faulty.. now wondering about the valve 😅, we are always busy and running 🏃♂️🏃♀️ we have been enjoying under that engine 😂 I really enjoy watching this videos now. I noticed a similar leak on my 08 MDX with 148k miles. Turns out all the gaskets/o rings were dry and tough. Your video was easy to follow and saved me a headache down the road. Thank you
I noticed that I was losing a little more than a quart between oil changes. This fix was 100% effective. We took a trip from Atlanta to South Florida and back and lost no oil.
@@TallFamilyFilms nice to hear it worked for you. Before the change, you could watch the oil leak onto the ground. Changed it, drove it for 30 min and now no more leaks. Thankfully I noticed it when I was changing the serpentine belt tensioner.
@Tony Hershey & Tall Family I have a leak on my 2008 MDX too I think the mileage is over 200k I think bc. However, the mechanic says I have to change the timing belt to be able to have fixed. The timing belt was changed in 2016. Is he correct?

We have a 2012 as well and just like yours it has been leaking oil, but not to the point where oil is on the driveway. Oil is on the oil pan bolts, so I’m thinking it’s just the oil pan gasket that needs to be redone, but doing this maybe a good idea as well. How was your oil pan? How many miles did you have? We have 120k and It’s getting about 1 qt low at the oil changing time.

Oh, and Acura ran an “oil consumption test” and said it was normal. I pointed out it was a 2012 Acura MDX and not a 1974 Dodge Dart. They were not amused.
Exactly the same issued with my 2011 Acura mdx the only thing in mine, I was quoted by 2 shop's over 3 grand's in repairs the major of course from the dealership at 5,000 went to a different honest shop they only charged me $1000. Now the mdx doesn't leaked oil anymore. Front and back valve cover gaskets fixed with this part also include.

07 is also J-series just like the one in the video (J37A1). So the engine is the same, but they could easily change things like gaskets to improve over time. I’d buy OEM for gaskets so Acura parts online will tell you for sure. Good luck!
@@tierragreen6760 Yes mine was leaking in two areas (top & bottom) 1. exactly what was described in this video with the VTEC solenoid gasket, which is super easy to do once you take the wheel off.... 2. the valve cover gasket, which was a bit more work about 4hrs for me.
Great video and well done!!! I have similar looking leaks from underneath the oil pan as well as on the bottom of the transmission. You mentioned in the video that you were certain the oil pan oil drippings came from the VTEC oil housing gaskets, but you weren't sure where the source of the leak on the transmission. Any updates on this? Did the replacement of the oil housing gasket stopped the traces of leak to the transmission, or was there another source of leak?? Please let me know. I think it comes from the cam shaft cover seals. There are two - one is front of the engine just below the throttle body and pretty easy to get to. The other is on the backside and not so easy. I’d start with the front, do the vtec that I show here and see how it goes.

This is good to know because many videos on TH-cam mention the series of engine and not the vehicle. Wikipedia has a listing of all cars the various Honda series engines are used in. This is also handy because you might find a video on a Honda Accord that has the same engine as your MDX.

I have a 2005 MDX with 350k miles leaking oil on the right side. Leaking so much oil, I have to use 2 qt every two days. My mechanic suggests major engine repair costing $4K + but I think it is a simple as replacing the gaskets shown in your video. Are you in NC?
I’m in GA. If I remember correctly, the 2001-2006 were all the same (Gen 1). It’s still a J-series engine so it will still have the same type of oil filter housing so these gaskets will exist but likely different shapes and part numbers. That’s a LOT of oil but also a LOT of miles (congrats). The good news is that much oil should be easy to find. Spray brake cleaner on everything that has oil on it under the car. Remove the passenger wheel and look in to see if you can locate the oil filter housing like I show in the video. Spray brake cleaner all over that and clean it up. Wear eye protection! Then fill the oil to the proper amount, and run the engine while you are watching to see where the oil’s coming from. That kind of a leak should start dripping every couple of seconds./minutes onto the driveway. After the cleaning that you’re going to do, it might take a little longer (few minutes) for the first drip to appear.
It helped a lot and it was relatively easy. The valve cover gasket on mine might need to be done as I’m still losing some oil. This is also a spot where it’s easy to see if it’s leaking.
When I go to an oem Acura parts website, it says that the part number for the o ring won’t fit my 07 MDX and I should use a different part. Is this true

But I still have the oil leak I’m pretty sure it’s not from the oil pan because the gasket have been changed too. With Honda bond. So my question is did you had the oil leak from the oil pressure switch or you not sure? Because that the only seal I didn’t change. In the video you said that you suspect of the oil pressure switch was the issue. Thank you
You’ve changed most things I would have changed. You didn’t mention how many miles, but if it’s over 100k, I would change the valve cover gaskets. It’s not a small job but it commonly causes oil leaks.
@@TallFamilyFilms my MDX is 180k miles right now but I don’t see any oil coming off from the top of the engine I believe the oil leak is coming from the oil housing filter because it’s the same as you had . It goes down to the oil pan and to the oil pan bolt .imma try changing the top of the oil housing filter seal and the pressure switch o rings. But after you changed all the seals and o rings in the oil housing filter did that fixed the leak?

The valve gasket are not leaking and the camshaft plug seal o rings not leaking either so my last attempt is to check the rear main seal but I don’t know if rear main seal leaks can go all the way down by the oil pan and drain oil plug.
@@hanselldisla4643 there is an o-run in the front and one in the back. The one in the back is harder to reach and I never did that one. The valve cover gaskets are also hard to detect if they are leaking. Pull each of your ignition coils (wires attached to the spark plugs) and see if any of them have oil on them. If they do you need a valve cover gasket. 180k miles is a lot for that gasket and I’d be surprised if it’s not leaking somewhere b

It slowed down my oil loss by quite a bit. Not totally gone but I no longer worry between oil changes and so can stretch to 5000 miles again (using synthetic).
@@ryanlopez4371 it never burned oil, it leaked. It also never leaked on the ground because it had to warm up before it would leak. That means it would lose the oil while moving so it would be all over everything under the car.
@@1tufgt dye is helpful, but sometimes doesn’t pinpoint where it is. Spray everything with brake cleaner that you can possibly see first. Look on TH-cam for camshaft seal videos on Honda J-series engines. I can see mine are leaking without removing many any parts. I mention it in this video - the front one is super easy so do them on at a time and test. Cheap too. Then there’s the valve cover gasket - ugh. I need to tackle that one and I’m only at 110k so you definitely should. It’s not expensive and it’s not “hard” but it’s tedious. I’d put money on all of those things before the oil pump seals. Just remember that gravity is a factor so a leak up top could leave oil all over the pan. Good luck! Keep me posted.
2014 Pilot oil pump seal leak ran down the front side of the crank pulley. Also to a lesser extent came out of the bottom of the lower timing belt cover. Took 2 solid days to fix (exhaust and oil pan removal) along with timing belt kit.
At the beginning of the video, you were not certain this was the cause of the leak, particularly at the transmission. I don't see a second video. Was it in fact the only source of the leak?
Hey BeStill (love that name!) - This repair significantly slowed my oil consumption. It also kept my oil much cleaner between changes. However, I still lose a little and the other video I still need to make is replacing the Camshaft Cover Seal. There are several videos showing it so check them out on youtube. Then there's the valve cover gasket which is always fun, but I'd start with these two because they are pretty easy - 1-2 hours for both.

Use brake cleaner to spray off all the old oil and watch it. Some are so bad you can watch it drip out while the engine is warm and running

I have 130k now so probably 120k when I did this video. My pan had oil all over it for sure. I think the gasket is not easy for that.

Valve Cover gaskets are definitely a leading cause of oil leaks on most cars over 100k miles. I need to do it too but it’s a whole day on this car

You can. But the gasket is the problem, and likely the gaskets don’t come with the new housing.

Referencing your gasket part numbers - Looks like my 2009 uses different gaskets . Did this fix your leak or were there more problem areas ?

Just bought an mdx 2011 126k miles…9k .Didn’t realize it was leaking until now…Worth Fixing or Taking back to the buyer????
They all leak oil. If it’s this, it’s pretty easy. You got a fair deal at 9K IMO so it might be best to fix it.

@@ryanlopez4371 it never burned oil, it leaked. It also never leaked on the ground because it had to warm up before it would leak. That means it would lose the oil while moving so it would be all over everything under the car.
I’m seeing oil down the side of my oil pan. I wonder if the oil pump seal has let go. Since the oil is closer to the front of the pan.
Maybe…Year and mileage?

@@1tufgt dye is helpful, but sometimes doesn’t pinpoint where it is. Spray everything with brake cleaner that you can possibly see first. Look on TH-cam for camshaft seal videos on Honda J-series engines. I can see mine are leaking without removing many any parts. I mention it in this video - the front one is super easy so do them on at a time and test. Cheap too.
Then there’s the valve cover gasket - ugh. I need to tackle that one and I’m only at 110k so you definitely should. It’s not expensive and it’s not “hard” but it’s tedious.
I’d put money on all of those things before the oil pump seals. Just remember that gravity is a factor so a leak up top could leave oil all over the pan. Good luck! Keep me posted.
@@TallFamilyFilms appreciate the info. I’ll start with getting brake clean and clean what I can and see what I can find.
2014 Pilot oil pump seal leak ran down the front side of the crank pulley. Also to a lesser extent came out of the bottom of the lower timing belt cover. Took 2 solid days to fix (exhaust and oil pan removal) along with timing belt kit.
At the beginning of the video, you were not certain this was the cause of the leak, particularly at the transmission. I don't see a second video. Was it in fact the only source of the leak?

This repair significantly slowed my oil consumption. It also kept my oil much cleaner between changes. However, I still lose a little and the other video I still need to make is replacing the Camshaft Cover Seal. There are several videos showing it so check them out on youtube. Then there's the valve cover gasket which is always fun, but I'd start with these two because they are pretty easy - 1-2 hours for both.

No, it’s not required. It will leak no matter what since the oil filter is attached. Since you’ll be down there anyway, it’s suggested.
