This was an amazing video, really opens people’s eyes regarding the current state of collecting/buying LEGO Star Wars
I remember back in 2019 just starting to collect StarWars Lego. At the time I had to struggle with paying $50-$60 for Darth Revan Polybag? Fast forward and the realization of FOMO paid in spades in that instance. That era of reasonable prices has unfortunately gone the way of the Dodo, but have to say I splurged at the right time and have amassed quite a valuable collection of rare sets and minis.
I didn't analyze the financial market side of LEGO collecting back then and had I known, I would have fomo bought more sets and figures haha
Luckily I collect Lego for what they meant for play even as an adult as a expensive but mind stimulating stress toy
This is why I’m selling all my LEGO sets. My closet space is completely full of empty LEGO boxes to “preserve the re-sale value” and a ridiculous amount of unopened sets that I have no space to build/display. I can’t deal with it anymore. I didn’t get into LEGO to be an investor/re-seller. I literally just made a video about how I have too much stuff.
I was trying to explain stock options to somebody in terms of buying/selling LEGO sets, but this takes that to a whole new level
Just about every set goes up in price after retiring.. so 1 year calls on everything haha
Great video! I constantly get stuck between investing or not. I’ve tried once with the fighter tanks but I couldn’t help myself and I opened them and built a purple clone army. Seems my love of collecting and building LEGO always beats the investor mentality.
Yeah I could never collect multiple sets only to sell them on later down the line, takes the fun out of it
@@owensanfordstuffSame, I only ever get one copy of a set, open it, build it to display & enjoy the set, then throw away the box after unless I have a special reason for keeping it.
@@ComicBoy750 I keep the front of the box because it saves room and it's sort of like a "list" of sets I've got, even if they're still in tact 😂
At this point the only thing stopping me from hoarding an unhealthy amount of legos is my space. I could probably buy more shelves, but at this point I should probably be spending money on more important things 😅
It’s crazy how much my mindset of Lego collecting has shifted. I’m sixteen now and with some convincing to my mom i’ve made about $300 of profit selling Lego on the aftermarket. I wish I could go back to when I didn’t think about what sets were going to skyrocket, and only bought what looked super fun to play with.
Awesome video and such a great topic to talk about. The majority of the TH-camrs I follow have been talking about this for weeks, but none of them actually get into detail. 💯
When I got back into Lego and saw how expensive they were. I made a rule for myself is just to buy only one of the set. I only broken that rule if the set is deep discount with my finding the OG 501st BP for only $7 at Walmart getting those two on shelf and grabbing another copy of the Republic Fighter tank because I love the purple clones. At the end of the day I try not to think about Lego investing and think of it as a hobby for me to relax after a long day of work and school.
I 100% understand that situation. LEGO is very expensive but you can usually find sets up to 30% off a few months before they retire. So it's almost always a good idea just to wait to get more expensive sets you want. I bought a few 501st Legion Clone Troopers sets for $17 before they retired. I'll open them one day.
Interesting topic, great video. Personally, I'm guilty of collecting cardboard and canisters but the sets are 20+ years old and if I ever sell them (which I will, one day), at least I can include the box.
I'd probably have held onto my cardboard if I had a proper space to secure them away, but now more room for my backlog haha
My motto is: if I miss it, I miss it. But if I have it, I have it. I only sold legos that I knew were rare, but didn’t care giving away. (Example: the thrawn Lego figure. I got about 80 bucks for it selling it to a local toy shop. I used that money to get a ps5 so I could play Spider-Man 2.)
Investing is over all beneficial for the community as it increases the availability of the set on the aftermarket after the set retires. What mainly judges the price is the demand for it, that’s why a figure like darth Malgus are really expensive while something like buildable Jyn Erso is worth nothing
Of course, they do provide a service in that sense, it's just the price anchoring and meme lead asking prices that makes it get pretty crazy.
People can ask whatever they want for something they're selling, but if no one is under cutting the market we're stuck with agreed upon high prices.
Supply and demand.
Fun video.
As someone with thousands of sets (but a large house with extra bedrooms to store them), I never bought a single one as an “investment.”
I bought all my sets at retail or less-usually on sale. I bought them with the idea I would build them or I got them for the kids or future grandkids. I wound up with bedrooms full of the stuff because I’ve bought them over 40+ years.
Even though I bought them to build, I still find it hard to pop the seals and build some of the older sets. My fear isn’t FOMO (although I do feel the need to buy sets before they retire). My problem is the knowledge of what some of these sets now cost.
It took me about 3 months of thinking about it before popping the seals on the Death Star II last month. I never bought it to keep it sealed, but it’s hard not to think about it when you m wi what it’s worth now.
Sounds like you're living the dream! The longer I keep sets sealed the harder it gets to open them haha
Awesome video
I suspect Lego is complicit in pushing alerts in Social media groups: "Set discounted 30% off, about to go out of production. "
I grew up being weekly in a small privately owned lego shop, so my first contact with lego was through a merchants eyes, wich helped me greatly. Lerned about part prices and scarcety quite early. So I always looked at lego as an investment I also could have fun with. More often then not I'm annoyed that I didn't make the right reselling investment rater then fomo. But yeah, I totally agree with the stuff you said. I loved the phase one clone wars clones and now a fox and wolffe cost 120 euros. Thats annoying.
It’s like you know me, man! I keep all my empty boxes. I flatten them for easier storage. I keep them, I cherish them…but I never take them out and look at them. IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE. All they do is to take up precious space! One reason for keeping them is that they would allow me to sell my LEGO for a better price. But I would never sell! So again - it makes little sense. Great video.
@@DarkBluishGray haha, truth!! I am, however, buying up empty boxes of my dearest childhood sets. I display them proudly on shelves on my wall.
What does that make me??
Amazing video! People are getting out of control! I’ve tried to reel myself back with Lego over the last 5 years or so, but FOMO and a completionist mindset convinced me to get sets that I had no real interest in. Don’t get sucked into it guys! Buy it because you would enjoy it, not because you feel obliged to.
Now, the question is: What to do to change all of that ? If it is even possible.
It's definitely much more complicated than I had initially thought haha. I wait for sales and only buy what I have room to either store or display.
I'm not an "investor", but the memes of LEGO investing is very transmissible.
Its rare i comment on anyone video but i think you really hit the nail on the head here and earnt a sub.
FOMO in the Lego community it massive these days due to the insane resale prices. ive dipped in and out of collecting over the years but since my kids have grown up and are now interested its hit an all time high.
The 'backlog' is certainly real and only ever gets bigger due to space constraints. The UCS Venator being a prime example. i grew up with the prequels and missed the original play scale releases and the Rexs. There was no way i was missing out again. cant wait for the micro fighter either. not really for the Rex but more for the pauldrons.
on the plus side as well though there is now so many ways to buy Lego you can always pick yourself up a bargain if your willing to shop around.
Thanks I'm pleased to hear that. I'm definitely looking forward to cheap accessible Rex figs, and always on the hunt for a bargain.
its strange how I always think about these issues FIRST in any other similar situation (game currencies like items) but Ive never though about it with lego. kinda an eye-opener
3:02 to be fair even the empty box’s can end up selling for a lot at least for the right box, heck the box is kinda more important that the Lego that makes up the sets as unless it’s an exclusive item you can replace the bricks from your parts bin/bins or from getting a few bulk sets off resellers while the box and it’s instructions harder to get than a few bricks you may be missing.
Interesting.. I guess in that respect you are correct. I will always keep the instructions.
100% Truth. While investing in lego is fun most of us don't have the resources to spend thousands of dollars on lego sets every years. So we are left with speculating on certain sets that we think will increase after retirement like battle packs, or sets with exclusive figures etc. I think the most ridiculous thing that we do in the lego community is getting sets graded. There is no way to tell if the parts that are sealed in the bags in the box are 100% all there AND there are no broken/stressed parts in those bags.
I've never heard of sealed set grading.. it does seem redundant because you're right you never know if you'll be missing a piece or something is miss printed, but the cardboard box looks nice :)
Yes I keep the boxes in my attic, idk why😭
As much as I don't buy into investing, I want to know which sets to purchase so I'm not looking with regret the next time I check Bricklink. What kills me is knowing that next weekend is likely the last chance to buy sets I've had my eye on directly from LEGO.
I definitely went through all the phases shown here, and with some lingering symptoms. One llingering symptom is I still have a backlog despite selling well over 200 sets in the last 11 months.
Thank you for sharing these thoughts because I’ve been wondering the same thkngs. I’ve kept my Lego boxes since I got my first Lego set. Except when I was younger I’d yell at my dad for throwing them away. Now that I live on my own, I keep only certain boxes that I feel definitely will help me possibly resell (If it ever comes to that) but really it also helps me to stay organized. Because I know I can always put the taken part sets in their appropriate boxes later if I get more shelf space. It’s definitely anticipating the future and just the collectors mindset. But I personally only collect with the intention to combine my sets into my own personal multiverse and display them. Only the best sets with the coolest play features are in my collection. I also love location based sets from Star Wars. Anyway, love your content!
I glad you dug the video dude. I totally get where you're coming from.
Man. You made me reflect about my small collection XD
FOMO suuuuucks are, so what I do is just focus on the sets that came out last year through out the years and then maybe treat myself to a new set every now and then.
Yeah, it puts me in the spot where I'm usually a year behind everyone, but at least I'm not stressed out over FOMO. And by the time I do get to the current sets the following year, they're typically always on sale for 20% or greater
That's actually a really good way to go about it. I tend to buy only a couple sets right when they come out to makes some video content, then wait until those sweet sales later in the year.
@@DarkBluishGray Oh yeah, if you make videos on the new sets, that's a whole different beast on it's own. It kinda feels like you need to right once it releases (Or earlier if you can help it) since people would rely on your overview to help them with their money spending decisions!
While I try to be strict on myself getting what's going to retire, I can't help myself sometimes lol Like that Mandalorian Fang fighter vs TIE Interceptor was just too nice to resist lol I also got two of the Pirate snub fighters as they released. But yeah! New sets are great! Sure that set is 140usd! But if I'm patient, I can get it for 110usd.
I saw this video on TH-cam a long time ago but didn’t watch it until today cause I just bought every last sw set off of an Iranian website and remembered your video. You’re so right man and btw nice collection🤘p.s. I don’t like mechs but never had the Luke pilot minifig😂
My fear of going broke counters out my fear of missing out.
Did resellers do this back in the day? Honesty don’t know.
I can’t backlog. I have to build it now lol
I just have more storage space than display space. So I cycle sets in and out.
My formul is to collect minifigs, with battle packs and buy expensive sets without figures. For example, I bouth a AT-TE without figures for 30 dollars and created the crew with the clone command station
(for everyone to understand, I converted the I paid in my country's currency into dollars)
Your wisdom runs deep. " The wisdom we gain in life is a gift to pass along-not to keep to ourselves.Dec 17, 2017 Yoda
Fantastic video. It’s true, having a backlog is pretty darn comforting especially when there’s sets you know are going to explode on the aftermarket. 😂
I experience this same thing the FOMO and the backlog and it’s really cool to hear someone actually address it seeing how you hear no one talk about it. Unfortunately I probably experience this more than most seeing how I collect multiple themes but Star Wars is the best after market to use as example seeing how it can feel like cartel sometimes. I also try and throw away boxes from newer set releases but if I buy something old and it still has the box I’m going to keep it.
Well put brother. Great content certainly earned my sub. Can’t wait to see what this channel becomes
I don’t invest in lego but I like to think that if I was to invest, it would always break even after retirement. If you have the money to spend now I think it can make a little extra cash on the side.
I definitely see that sentiment, but I guess I sometimes buy multiple sets just because I want two. Never with the intent to sell it for a profit in the future, just that the value it retains helps me justify buying it knowing I could sell it haha
1:48 I'm passionate about the hobby, but I can't say I have a backlog in the traditional sense; everything I buy, I build. Do disassembled sets count as a backlog? Cause I have plenty of those ☺
You know, I've always had a fear of disassembling my Lego sets for parts, idk why, I don't sell lego, and it's not like they will cease to exist. But recently I've told myself to stop this, if it no longer brings you any joy sitting on your shelf, then take it apart, use the parts to build stuff you do enjoy.
It gets very hard with large sets
I'm not a moc builder, so if i decided to disassemble my sets it would be to make display space for new sets.
I keep my boxes because they'll be handy if I have to move to another house. I just flatened them and put them all in the UCS LAAT box, except for my UCS AT-AT which would never fit and because I like it very much.
I see nothing but facts here.
How are you in my head?!?!?
Great video and attitude towards the subject by the way. :)
This is timely discussing FOMO in Lego with Black Friday imminent!
I haven’t bought any Lego for investment or backlog for a few months but due to some great deals I am sure I’ll make a few purchases this weekend!
My Lego hoard in my loft is a mix of investment and backlog - either way I usually buy at least 2 of each set just in case -apart from UCS sets due to their RRP.
The backlog discussion is equally interesting as I have definitely bought a fair few sets for myself for building another time (space constraints being the main reason) but after a while you see the prices some retired sets are achieving (Betrayal at Cloud City for example) and then I start talking myself out of opening them!!?!
I'm glad to have picked up on our collective LEGO experience haha My backlog is 100% tied to lack of storage and display space. That's not going to change any time soon, but I still want a lot of sets. I talk myself out of opening some, not only because they're retired sets, but because I have no where to place them!
@@DarkBluishGray yep it gets a bit silly. I probably do have some more spare room but now I have started collecting vintage Star Wars stuff, I am soon going to run out!
I did also buy a couple of smaller sets for myself this year but just can not seem to get the time to build them.
But some larger sets I bought for myself - i.e a couple of UCS sets, now they have gone up in price by a few 100 £’s from what I paid for them…..I can’t seem to bring myself around to opening them - gyyaaaaaargh!!!!
This is why I'm focusing on collecting transformers. They might not be as entertaining as building Lego sets, but at least they dont feel extremely overwhelming to collect.
I personally only "invest" in lego so i can buy or trade lego that i acrually want
Right on point hahaha wow
I got rid of my empty cardoard box adiction after a rat pooped on my 12 years old box collection and now i dont keep any boxes
oooof all it took was an act of god haha At least you provided an expensive quality home to rodents ;)
Spot on!!! 😂
All I can say is I'm beyond glad that I am both a MOC builder (so I already do not buy many sets) and not a big fan of most IPs (like Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, etc.). I couldn't imagine trying to juggle which sets to buy if I was a set collector or was interested in those licensed themes... yikes.
I'm guilty on all of this.😅
"My name is Gray and I.... collect cardboard"
We're all in the self help comment section together.
Literally every night when I’m brushing my teeth the FOMO comes over me, *f*ck, what if I can’t get the captain rex*
You'll get the new Captain Rex for $13 in a Y-Wing microfighter set :)
I dont have a backlog bc most sets even go higher in value when used. The only downside is sunlight damage
Anyone who starts as a fan and ends up a collector/investor crosses the build line,
This is when the enjoyment of opening building and displaying slowly turns into the enjoyment of collecting nsib sets this is where the fomo comes into it for me 🤣
Good video
I dint collect the boxes but i haver thrown out an instruction manuel i still have my first ever sets instruction from 2004
I think investors do a good for the community. If it weren’t for them, supply would be lower and prices higher post-retirement.
They do provide a service to us, it just seems like the secondary LEGO market exists in a bubble. Almost like there was a deficit of "investors" in the past which inflated prices of older sets, and now that more people themselves are reselling they all just agree on price anchoring on newly retiring desirable sets.
I actually have a 20th anniversary Snowspeeder, but I lost some body parts of the Lando Calrissian figure. I so regret losing the figure now.
I still punch myself for not getting more Overwatch, Speed Racer, or Indiana Jones sets.
I got the three new Indiana Jones sets. I've only built the Temple of the Golden Idol set so far though.
Ahh. I'm talking about the old ones though. Those were AMAZING. Only ever got 2 of them.
Ive been selling lego sets for like, half what they actually go for because i just dont have space and, even if i miss a star wars lego set, theres always a different one ill probably like more, or a remake thatll be better
I've gotten out of this fomo state but i definitely had this mindset not for the sake of reselling or to own and never unbox (i just don't understand why you'd do that), i just wanted to get the sets i liked but the fact i couldn't, this made me value what i could get and work in my budget.
I only have 1 set that i brought this year to build last year that being The Galaxy Explorer as it's retiring now. I would have brought The Guardians Ship but don't have the money I'm immediately buying it next year though. But again these are sets i just want to get.
Boxes i agree for some reason i just kept them and did nothing with them i recently got rid of all of them as i didn't need it.
I bought over 50 501st battle packs for my army, but fear of opening them reducing their value…
I can't even build lego 😔 but I got about over80 sealed lego sets and I have a passion for picking and choosing the ones to get and save them and I've done amazing....I did even better wen I found out some of the mini figs are worth way more then the whole sets😊....90%of my collection skyrocketed and the other 10%is worth more then they were at retail....let's not even mention I got almost all my collection for pennies on the dollar...so its been a win win at every turn...I don't get them all...and I just seem to have a eye for what will do good...I'm running out of room....my only regret is I didn't begin soon enough....I wish I wud of known wen they 1st came out with star Wars lego
Lego, Warhammer, transformers, gunpla & lego all the same with this and I took a scoop of eatch for copium then I started taking breaks from the plastics Not quite touch grass but focused on the 9 to 5
FOMO huh... Can't really say I have it anymore. It's great that Lego holds its value but I'm not gonna buy a glorified cardboard box that's for sure. The only annoying thing is missing out on certain vehicles/ships which aren't seen for years or decades like the TIE Defender or the Rogue Shadow or the Sith Fury class Interceptor.
At least with X-wings, Jedi Starfighters, Landspeeders and the likes there isn't a huge gap between releases.
I do wish there was an evergreen line of Lego Star Wars sets composed of the most iconic Star Wars vehicles and ships that were always on shelves, readily available.
The fomo I feel is often tied to those retired sets that we won't see again for years. I don't think we'll see another U-Wing or Tie Striker. There will always be another X-Wing and Jedi Star fighter like you said.
Having to get rid of your boxes... feel for you brother.
hahaha it was for the best. I needed the storage for sealed sets anyway.
The worst Lego collectors is the ones who buy the sets purely to charge people far more in a few years
Like it’s a set that’s mass produced but they seem to think it’s a rare commodity
They're self proclaimed investors at that point. The sets only become "rare" after retiring, because you have to find a secondary seller to get them.
Supply and demand takes over.
The only reason I haven’t cracked $5000 of sets it because I don’t have space anymore, I don’t care about price my collection has gained insane value yea but I collect for fun 😁
I have to admit, I keep some of my cardboard boxes from sets I have built.
@@DarkBluishGray Agreed, I would run out of space if I didn't lol :)!
I keep all my boxes but have no more room, do people fold them to store?
I have the same flatnned ones 💀
Oof I guess I have a backlog lol
The UCS AT-AT and Razorcrest
I don't have any UCS sets. I'd love to have the AT-AT but $850 is waay too much for me.
@@DarkBluishGray That’s fair, I got it for $100 off the day it came out, so I got it for $700. But I’ve had it in the box unbuilt since day 1. I also have enough snow trooper battle packs to fill it I’m just lazy
@@TheTrollMastah That's awesome.
I'm envious, but I have no space to display such a beast anyway.
Where did you get those shelves?
They came with the house. No brand to identify on them. They're cheap.
IN THE END ITS ALL JUST PLASTIC IN A BOX
I’m a moccer, y’all set collectors are weird as helll
I collect only the ultimate seriew and technic/Icon and ideas. But the boxes i throw away immediately it lets me know its mine for ever.
I 100% have a backlog, and you’re right - much of it is driven by the sense of “I should buy this now, because it’s only going to be more expensive should I want it later”.
Great video on our shared hobby! 👍
Appreciate it! I enjoy your content.
