Could you guys do a video on how to determine the size of a liner for a project as well as how to estimate how much rock gravel and boulders? It seems like a total science how you guys get exactly the right amount without having to stop the project and go get more! Lol
Ha ha thanks Ryan! Appreiciate it! Great idea for a video. Truth is... it's not as much a 'science' as it might appear to be. The amount of rock, or tonnage, depends so much on the type of rock, the size you are using, etc. And this was I believe a 4 day project, so if we need to, we can always bring more rock with us on the morning, or take extra back with us in the evenings.
As far as sizing liner, general rule of thumb is take your width + depth (x 2) + 2' extra on each end. So for example, using even numbers to make it easy: a 10 x 15 pond, that will be 2' deep, I'll take the 10 ft, add 4' for the 2' depth, and then add 2' extra on each end, so another 4', to end up with 18' wide, and then to find the length, same formula just using the size of the length instead, so that would end of being 23' long. So for 10x15 pond, use 18'x23' liner. This allows you to be creative and be able to dig a larger boulder into the edge etc without being constrained by your liner size.
As far as boulders qty. we find the best way is to look at past jobs, evaluate the tonnage of boulders used in that, and then use that reference to calculate how many we'll need for a new job. Keep in mind we only need to do that for custom jobs, all our kits, like in this video, we've been building for 15-20 yrs and we know exactly how may boulders each kit takes because we've done them so many times.
You 'could' use formulas. but that would mean you better be using the same type and size of rock. as soon as you change anything there, your formula needs redone. So, like I said, instead of wasting brain cells on formulas, we find that we're better of comparing to past jobs that were similiar in size, and then adjust accordingly for a new job we may be bidding. Now that being said, gravel could def be a formula. There's not much variable with gravel. Basically just use calculations to figure out how much you need to get 3" coverage across the bottoms of the water feature.

Beautiful! Did you implement any proactive planning for water in motion, for situation were pump shuts off? Are the rocks sandstone?
There's an overflow drain for any excess when it shuts down, and an automatic fill for when it starts back up
Tussey would you mind explaining the use of the cement bags in the process of setting the large boulders?
That was a precautionary measure we took on this job for chipmunk damage prevention. Not anything structural or required to build a water fall
I just found you guys from the Shaq video. Joey Genovese did my pond (I'm his latest pond), and it's insane. I also sub and watch a few of the other guys (Jaak, Greg, Ed, etc). I can't believe I never saw your channel before.

Got a question for you if you have time.... I run a TH-cam channel myself, on transforming land into food forest ecosystems. This is why I wanted a "working with nature" pond.
Your editing and video quality is off the charts, and I'd like to improve in this myself. What software do you use? And in the final shot of the waterfalls, what camera is that with? Its insane how amazing it looks. And where do you get your music from?

Ha ha thanks man. We have fun, and I love creating things, whether it's with rocks and water, stories in video or images, or even software! (more on that later in the next year)
I use the Adobe CC suite: Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom, Photoshop, etc. The final shot was taken with Panasonic GH5 with Sigma 18-35 lens. You can use pretty much any editing software, and produce nice stuff. They all have the main tools it takes to produce good quality stuff. Adobe's products, Davinci Resolve, Final Cut are all good options. Good luck! Wish you all the best on your channel!

So under tips and tricks I saw you mention in a previous video about grinding a spot on a spillway rock to get more of a sheet of water rather than it rolling over the front of the rock.

How about a follow up video, on this or another water feature, how does it look a few years in, with the fish and plants in equilibrium and the landscaping grown in and weathered. Maybe you made a video like that already and I just haven't seen it yet (Just found your channel today).
Also I'd like to learn more about the biosystem details, why isn't the water all green and gross? Do you filter the water or is it about the balance between the plants and fish? Maybe you have a video on that already...

It was a tsurumi 9pl pump. And no concrete under pavers, just separation fabric, compacted stone base.

Oh yes, we used that too! Forgot about that. We doubled up the wire and the concrete cloth
You showed a mesh type screen that you put down on the waterfall, but you didn’t mention it, why?
This is only used to prevent rodents from getting in! We don't use it in many jobs, but sometimes we need to so that they don't damage the liner!
How can do this for a living through aquascape?!

i want to see the finished product... all of it... not a bunch a slow moving close ups. Ok, the closeups are good, but can you put at the end of the video a 30 second slow moving view of the entire landscape. all of it. The house patio, the entire water feature, including all of the surrounding landscape. and how about including the plumbing and wiring and lighting.. show what it looks like at night.
Yeah it's tough to make it back to all of these places at night, I do try to at least on the amazing ones. They look awesome. I'll try to get you more in the future. And yeah. been shooting more wide angle lately :)
