Reading the book “Custodians of Wonder” where a man from Africa has been the descendant of a very long line of balafon musicians entrusted with continuing his musical heritage. It’s wonderful! Thank you for the demonstration!
I just now learned what this instrument was and came here to hear it. The picture I saw showed a wooden xylophone-like instrument and from that picture I expected a dull, hollow sound like bamboo chimes. I never expected such a vibrant sound from a wooden instrument. Amazing.
Was reading “Wretched of the Earth” and it mentioned this instrument so I had to look it up. This music is absolutely amazing and inspiring. Africa Unite!!
i found a 7 note balafon in a garage sale and love the sound, but with this many notes it sounds even more gorgeous. I love the way the notes sizzle a bit like distortion
This is just what I needed. I came across a type of tree called Chinese Flame Tree that grows fast and all over as an invasive species in Florida. Unlike most such trees, this one produces a fairly heavy, hard wood that is one of the best tone woods for percussion I have ever heard (at least anything free!). So I will try to save and dry some to make a xylophone, but I do not know how to make a balafon! I need to finish making some traditional style flutes first...
Did you build it? Today I am gluing the ending holder on a lyre I am building! If you have not built this instrument yet, I cannot emphasize enough how worth it it is!
When I lived in Boston, I remember hearing this instrument played by a white guy named David Gilden. He would amplify it through a small battery-powered amp and perform for travelers on the subway. He also played the kora, and the two sounds complemented one another.

I think the warlord was Soumaoro Kanté. His griot owned what seems to be the first balafon, called the Sosso Bala, which is still only played once a year...
Oh my, this is pure african magic. Hello from America 👋🏾
Hello From Africa !
For me this, along with the voice, is the true sound of Africa.....
I love the unfinished drums in the background. Djembes and Congas....
that's reductive

You can actually get a good sound like this from bamboo as well, but not the chimes
there's one band I know that used these professionally
that would be oingo boingo
Precursor to the xylophone.
that sound is not just from the wood, dried insect cocoons are used to enrich the sound
@@TheFourthDefenderthose are gourds. Not insect cocoons, they grow as plants.

Merci beaucoup pour cette perle, ça m'a touché au plus profond de mon coeur 🙏🏽
Excellent. When I watch this, I can't help thinking that someone like Roy Ayers would draw inspiration from watching a balafon solo

A game told me something about Sumanguru, a Westafrican Warlord and his legendary Balofon. I came here to see what this instrument sounds like.
