You know it's actually very very rare to see kpop TH-camrs speak so positively about kpop idols. It's either they're criticizing them, insulting them or possibly even speaking about them in a neutral manner. This is really nice to see. You're setting a good example for others in the space🤝

I saw Kim Minji in the thumbnail and immediately CLICKED!!!!
The thing I like most about Minji is her ability to communicate through facial expressions. I don't mean the typical aegyo performance stuff.... she just has a knack for letting her eyes and cheeks do the talking. This is a really rare skill, and it's why I think Minji is going to be a great drama or comedy actress someday.
If that can become an actor then anyone can. I rather watch Twilight for rest if my life, then watch anything with Minji in it.

Minji is just precious, the journey to being in NEWJEANS might have not been easy but to be honest I don’t think the group would be complete without her. Minji overall just has a fun personality that matches so well with the rest of the members which makes the dynamic between each of them more enjoyable to watch, I think that she will continue to grow as a amazing artists as well as the rest of the group. In the end I love Minji and I also love this video that perfectly ties all of the amazing qualities about her ❤.

Minji to me is a femme fatale, she executes whatever she puts her mind to. Newjeans isn't just another kpop group this is lightning in a bottle. Diverse personalities that seem very grateful for each opportunity given to them. The first group to be at lollapooloza and getting that big of a reaction from an American audience. After watching their vlog of that performance it truly was heartwarming to see them get overwhelmed at the positive response they received after only debuting a year prior. I know they will do great things and I look forward to it! 🐰
I don't normally care for videos like this cause they almost always focus on the facts. But you are different. You seem to be able to capture the emotion of the members. This video actually made me tear up. Minji is such a precious person, and you did a very good job capturing that here. Thank you

I may not have Phoning myself, but when I see translated archives of the lives, a lot of them include solo lives from her. I highly doubt it's from any sort of free time, but the fact that she puts aside that much time to interact with fans thru the live app is something definitely significant to me

Oh my God, you almost made me cry. It's like, seriously, how I see Minji, this young woman who's like super passionate about her job, the group members, and her fans. I could like totally go on and on about her, but what I love the most about her is how she's, like, so different from the other group members. And it's these differences that, like, bring them all together and make them a unique group. Like, for example, for peeps like me with this deep voice, who can sometimes be a bit awkward or controlling, she makes us feel like we're not alone, y'know?
That's why I'd love for more people to, like, really get to know her beyond just this pretty face she's got going on.

I'm older than her but for some reason something about her is deeply intriguing to me, I've been a kpop fan for 8 years now and I still find her very different from any other idol I've ''stanned'' in the past. I love how intelligent, kind and witty she is but I also equally love the fact she's super frank, blunt and at times irreverent-- it's part of her very 3 dimensional charcter. Something about her comes across as so honest and pragmatic it makes me wanna ask her about her opinion on a multitude of topics, just wanna pick her brain ahah

Honestly this has my in tears
Cute video, though Minji, as well as any other idol, are whoever you perceive them as. To claim this is who they truly are based on their idol persona is simply naive.
I find Minji to be quite a character, and I base my impression of her on her phoning lives mostly. Unlike their other content (which may often be scripted fully or to some extent), this is raw, live reactions and conversations. Overall, I find her funny, intelligent, and surprisingly mature for her age. She is natural with the fan service, I mean, she just knows how to do it "right."
What impresses a lot is that she is not afraid to stand out for herself, even if this could mean to not behave in an idol - acceptable manner. I feel as this is where her strong character shines the most.
All in all, I'm very intrigued by her, and I find her to be one of the most interesting people who have debuted in the last few years.

I’ve been a K-pop enjoyer since 2018 but didn’t really get into it until 2022 I’ve had biases and just one ult for years but without really engaging with their content life or anything. It wasn’t until Minji started to suddenly appear on my ig that it happened it was like ult at first glance I didn’t know anything about her nor her group but I was already so hooked I would watch her content be videos, photos, edits, songs anything Minji related across all media platforms 24/7. I just couldn’t get enough of her and that had never ever happened to me so I strongly believe that she is very special. In the beginning, I was just enamored of her visual but as I got deeper I found out she wasn’t an ice princess as she appeared instead she was an intelligent, cute, funny, and mature young woman who loved her members and fans like no one else. It’s been months already and the attachment it’s intact I believe the reason why could be the fact she's from 2004 like me which makes this parasocial thing stronger cause she feels like a friend like some classmate I could had. It’s so weird to me so unlike me that at times I feel even frustrated for getting so attached to an idol like that but I don’t see myself letting go of her any time soon. She’s such an amazing artist and person that I’m just so happy to get to see her grow and become even better I admire her very much and will continue to support her❤.

I recently became a Minji fan, and I must admit I fell for her charm quite easily ✋️🫠. She's the the type of idol that makes you wanna say(scream), "I'm super happy that you became an idol.", because they are this good at it. She is just perfect for it, even with her imperfections here and there. I like how she can be quite mature, and also quite goofy at times. Face is puppy coded, personality is bear coded lol 😆
The commentary on her relationship with the members (bbangsaz all the way 🤭) and how she cherishes them is spot on. It's really one of the most amazing things about her, she's a born leader, while being so young.
For those who are yet to discover her, I highly recommend watching her phoning lives. It really helps to quickly get to know her personality. She's such a bubbly, cool and funny girl. I can't take enough of her and I've watched tones of content for 2 months now.
Minji is the type of idols that make the whole idol-fan experience enhanced, thus so memorable and special. I genuinely adore her to bits 🫶

As an old dude, I find it incredibly striking how much these young people's lives are analyzed these days, and how every minute of their lives are recorded by the camera. Minji strikes me as a pretty troubled person, in ways that are not a problem yet, but I feel for her and any kid that is living that kind of life. If she wasn't "hot", she wouldn't be in this position (getting analyzed by all of us) at all. And for women, they find that the game changes for them at some point - especially in the mercilessly brutal kpop industry - even by the age of 25-26, when the can't hop around as energetically as the 17 year olds. People will love her less. This is going to have an effect on her, as you can see in every bit of footage of 30 year old former idols. Enjoy the ride, kid. Five years from now, the next generation will be twice as monitored and analyzed as this generation.
It's so weird how people have these parasocial assumptions about what's going on in these kids' minds and lives. We can be sure that life is very different for them than it looks to us.
Minji is not even hot, has a body of a man. Bella Hadid is someone who is hot, not this fridge shaped Minji.
Interesting take, though I don't find it striking at all. It's their idol life, not their personal life that is being recorded and analyzed. It's not like we're part of the "Truman Show". They are giving us exactly what they want us to see, and in reality, we know close to nothing about who these people truly are.
The more content a group releases, the better from marketing point of view. Newjeans especially drops a very good amount of bts content, shows, vlogs, dance practices etc. This only helps their fans to feel more connected and involved with the group. To add and their app where they make video calls with live chat. Put all of these together, and you get the perfect parasocial relationship generator. So it's not that striking when you know the purpose behind all of it, is what I mean.
I don't doubt that all of these young boys and girls truly dreamed of becoming idols. I do think, however, that they are as much as kpop fans deceived by how kpop is being portrayed. As they are all leaving their biggest dream, they are always happy to be working hard for the love and support of their fans, it's all sunshine and rainbows, basically. (Of course, there is fame and money). Who wouldn't love to be idolized? Many take the fall from the piedestal quite hard, though I think they all know it's a short run, so the smart thing to do is to make the best out of it.
I wouldn't worry about Minji in particular, given that her group and herself are already in the big league, so to say. I do feel bad for groups that fail to succeed, and years of training just go down the drain.

Yeah millions of people in this world live hard lives without the part about getting rich and being adored, so there is a point to be made that these kids are not bad off. Still, the whole situation is bonkers from any reasonable point of view. It's akin to a kind of emotional prostitution, which is not real healthy for the audiences either, much in the same way as pornography is starting to effect people. The parasocial enjoyment people are taking comes at a price. You're right they don't know what they were getting into - think of Hanni terrified by the paparrazi on the way to the airport - and I don't think the whole ride turns out really well for anyone. At some point, they'll be asking themselves if they wouldn't have been happier going to college.
It really is the Truman show, don't you think? We don't see what they want us to see, we see what their management company orchestrates. They don't have much private life. I remember John Lennon saying he had slept with "thousands" of groupies, and zero of them turned up in the tabloids. That kind of privacy is not possible now.
As for this kid Minji, I don't pretend to know something about her. But from decades of interpersonal experience I can read a face well enough to see that there is a lot of sadness, anger, and tension going on there, and her life is not all sparkling roses. Her life is I think not like Danielle, who, bless her heart, was spoiled rotten and seems genuinely chipper and well-loved by family. All of these kids have "dance moms" or they wouldn't be there at all.
I wish them all the best and I enjoy their music and everything, they seem like lovely people, but an old man is someone who has learned the difference between a friend and a hooker.@@bluepoppy-mv7tm
@UncleSubBass-qe5zy Such a level of exposure surely comes at a high price. I can't even imagine how I would feel to be so exposed all the time and so many people to follow my every move and often judge me on the way. The stress these young people have to endure on a daily basis is certainly not healthy at all.
By "they are showing us what they want us to see," I also meant the management. Clearly, the employees/members have very little say in these things. It's true they don't have much of a private life. However, we're still seeing mostly the kpop persona rather than the real person behind it. I do think that Korean celebrities have way more privacy than Hollywood celebrities, for example. Seeing things like candid paparazzi photos of idols(unless official events, airport photos etc), and dating news is extremely rare in Korea. I'm sure many idols are dating, and it's simply kept private to not disturb the parasocial relationships with fans.
As for Minji, I think I know what you mean. These emotions, I believe, started to surface fairly recently, likely as a result of her kalguksu "scandal". As far as I know, the girl was attacked for a year because of this, so I wouldn't be surprised if she's actually dealing with such negative emotions. Her outburst during the live stream in January shows this whole thing took a toll on her emotions. Though I trust she'll be fine when this is eventually forgotten over time.
