So grateful they rejected stamina based combat. Those systems can be great, but it would ruin the feeling of being the GOD OF WAR if Kratos got winded after swinging an axe a few times.
A great mechanic for one game can be detrimental to another.

22:02 I think this right here is the #1 thing that makes the combat so good for me. The fact that I can cancel animations with dodges and make dodge in the middle of combos and still get the combo finisher is one of the reasons the combat so stylish and satisfying.

I am really surprised that recalling the axe was discovered and added as a solution to solve a specific problem. I had assumed that it was a staple idea from the very beginning because considering the viking lore and themes I thought they were trying to remind people of Thor and his ability to recall his hammer.

That's kind of weird to be honest, I wouldn't have expected such a UX oriented concept to be the source of knowledge defining something that is so common among action games, which is canceling moves. It's also about reflecting, parrying. You should reward players for reacting fast, and also penalize them should they decide to use something that locks you in place and which you shouldn't therefore use in certain scenarios.

This is nothing new. Devil May Cry started it, not God of War. And this wasn't an "RPG" by any stretch of the imagination. It was a mostly linear action game with "RPG elements" shoehorned in because that's what every single other game was doing at the time.

    • @kingkaizoku85
      @kingkaizoku85 ปีที่แล้ว

@Neonmirrorblack Why you gotta make this all competetive? Theyre great games and in fact, fighting many enemies at once didnt stem from dmc1. It was already way before that. And that aside, the time frame between gow1 and dmc3 was 1 month. realistically speaking, there would have been no shit inspired from dmc3 but only stuff inspired from the previous 2 games. You cannot work on a game and really build it but then in just 1 month, add a shit ton of inspiration from another game and not miss the deadline. Like hell, they were already under pressure for gow1 and didnt manage to add icarus segments (instead adding them in gow2) and they didnt even manage to put a boss guarding the box of pandora which they planned on.
In conclusion. Gow1 is inspired by dmc1 and dmc2 but not by dmc3. The timeframe is just too short.
But that aside, youre comparing 2 different worlds here. Gow1 and dmc3 can both be played stylish and can both be played efficiently. Yet that doesnt change the fact that they both encourage different things. Gow1 wants you to be smart, dmc3 wants you to be stylish. They even really made it clear after that SE video with the "stylish combat compilation" in the gallery.
Gow1 on the other hand is about mastering encounters. Use the petrification system on the bats for extra orbs on "shattered", use the blade of artemis, your damaging tool, on stronger enemies. Use collisions and the orion harpoon for scaling damage on difficulties. Thats just scratching the surface. I really recommend "extreme gameplays" ultimate gow1-3 guide as it goes in depth alot. Im not telling you to watch it in 1 sitting (its almost 5 and a half hours long, a bit more.), but I think just by reading through the time stamps it shows how gow and dmc are different games. Both get simplified by reviews on IGN and bullshit like that but if you spend 1000 hours in each game respectively, you will come to conclusion that both games can get played in this way, yet one way is encouraged more of the other so that you dont get punished or in dmcs case, get a bad rank.
If youre not gonna read all that ill just make it short. You are for no reason comparing two differnet games which strive for different gameplay but can be played the same way.

That guy at the end talking about "Give Me a Challenge" (hard difficulty) is incorrect. Yeah, numbers are tweaked for more enemy health, and more enemy damage output... but the biggest difference from normal to hard is the stagger.
For example, take Draugrs, the basic enemy in the game. On normal, R1 attacks will flinch them, not allowing them to attack back, every single time. But on hard, they can often eat your R1 and attack you right through it. This forces the player to use the "set up" button, as Jason referred to it earlier. Using R2s on Draugr to bounce them in the air, then you can send them with R1.
Take that idea and extrapolate it in some way to every other enemy in the game. That's hard mode... Now very hard, or "Give Me God of War" takes this concept and strengthens enemies even further to the point where they'll almost never flinch from your R1s... not only that, but if you don't keep the pressure on, enemies will power themselves up and become even stronger if you don't kill them as quickly as you can.
This guy saying that Hard mode just changes enemy health couldn't be more incorrect.

The god of battle. Every combat game I play I compare to this GoW game. So good and so weighty. Try a few hours of this game then fire up assassins creed origins; the enemies and attacks have no weight or real cause and effect, feels like a early alpha in comparison.

The game ended up being really amazing, but it is still kind of a shame how 99% of the time I am getting very close and personal with Kratos' shoulder pad instead of Kratos himself...
It's a weird thing, but they zoomed in the camera because Kratos would get kinda lost in between the monsters, but the monster now are mostly humanoid and the same size as Kratos. So even if the camera was zoomed out, Kratos would not feel exactly smaller than everybody else. I don't think a closer camera necessarily makes you feel more "close and personal" with a character, but it certainly does make you feel like you're literally "close" to them. It's almost like they came up with a solution to a problem that would never happen in the new game.

Glad to see that they decided not to change the "it was really hard to see anything" camera from their initial tests, because the camera for combat was terrible in that game. That's the main reason they had to add the only somewhat functional arrow indicators. It was all because a certain director wanted his game to LOOK like a movie, even though video games are not movies, and trying to force them to be at the cost of gameplay functionality is never good.

It's fairly obvious that Dark Souls was an inspiration. It was huge at the time. GoW aped DMC for almost a decade, and all of a sudden they want to do "deliberate" combat.

It was amazing, my only real problem was that he didn't feel like a "god" of war. He felt like an "incredibly strong man" of war. I feel like Kratos had to labor too hard to kill many of these types of enemies. Sometimes it also felt like the axe just dragged, I get the pause for emphasis but something about it made it seem hard for him.

hope in GOW rag the combat get less clunky, late game GoW reboot really didn't got me
    things that got my attention:
skills have too long anticipations and no invincibility frames, in the end you don't have time to use 90% of attacks without being interrupted (killed on higher difficulties)
enemies animations... did not evolve to this close quarter combat, hard to see projectiles, unblockable lasers, impossible traking on attack animations, no proper anticipation on enemies animations (they just stay still for a time and do an attack, instead of a visible movement)
unblockable attacks (you just expect not to die, specially with the wing girls)
the boss fights were good, they are unique, but you get like... 3 of then?
