    I'm tempted to delete the RCD test button tick boxes on my next EIC forms. It can be assumed that the certificate would not have been issued if the button didn't work, so the tick provides no information. How could I ever issue the certificate with an 'X' instead of a tick? I suppose it could be added to the Schedule of Inspections as one box, instead of a whole column on the cramped Test Results page.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That's an excellent point. Why bother with it on an EIC other than to show you did your bit as the installer by checking its operation which... you would hope... any installer would do anyway? There could just be a single tickbox on the cert that says "Verification of all test buttons" which would do the same job.

  • @kayloh1016
    @kayloh1016 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    David, If you go onto your settings on Easycert and find certificate defaults then you can find a few things that can help you there.
    You can set the default IR reading to be blank, however I would suggest ticking the box that says “Show insulation resistance readings with 4 columns”. This will display L-L, L-N, L-E and N-E on your certificates. Typically we use N/A on the L-L column as we were told by our supervisors that this is in reference to 3-phase circuits only.
    Thoughts?

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My preferences are set to blank for IR, however that doesn't stop it from copying what you enter on the top line to circuits below as soon as you enter the name for that circuit. The four column format I don't use because, as you say, they apply more to three-phase. Although I do install/test three-phase circuits occasionally, L-L would still cover things if the result is the same between each phase. If different, then I might break out the four columns so I can show where those differences are. Most of the time, I'm IR testing L-N for new circuits and circuits with no loads, then LN-E. On a new circuit, I'll check L-E and N-E as individual tests, but the result ought to be tip-top and the same for each of course, therefore only the one result in the "Live-Earth" box needs recording. If there's a difference, I'll want to know why. On an EICR for an existing circuit, I test L-N where there are no loads, and LN-E where there might be and I won't necessarily investigate it being below optimal unless it's either likely faulty (

      Electraform gets very good press, but too much of my work is rural and I can't rely on getting a signal. Their pay-per-cert model would also cost more to use if I'm issuing more than 60 certs/reports per annum (which I am, two to four times that number). Also, R1+RN is something I can do without - it's a test that only tends to get performed when commissioning new rings, so having it taking up real estate on a crowded schedule is largely a waste. An RN+R2 column however would serve to verify the neutral for all circuits, not just rings, and it proves the R1+R2 result which should match it, thus indicating if there's a loose connection or not on the live wiring.

    I have used Easycert for a while, albeit under a different account. Since going it on my own, I went straight for what I was used to. Managed to break my laptop, so called in desperation of needing to switch machines without having to wait 12 hours. Spoke to the most miserable person you could ever wish to speak with, who was basically the TV character who just kept repeating "computer says no", and then went on to tell me how I shouldn't be using a Chromebook, despite this being exactly as it had been used by me for years. I think I'll be developing my own certificate software alongside a facilities management system later next year. Totally put me off their product.

    David, have you thought about reversing the order of the date (YYMMDD) to aid sorting?

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to do that for invoices before moving to a sequential system and proper invoicing software, but I never bothered with the certs. Electronic copies are kept in each customer record in the files, and I can search Easycert by name to find any particular paperwork. I also have a certificate register showing when each was issued and to whom. With all that, the cert number itself isn't too important other than to indicate the date it was issued one way or another.

    Best Electrician on youtube... Funny and informative as ever. Totally agree about Max demand, complete waste of time, I did it on a rewire once, had a 60A fuse, managed to get Max demand with lots of diversity and ignoring circuits I had split up to come to around 98A. When I contacted the local DNO, that being Western power, they had one question "Are you installing a car charger?" If the answer is no then their response is if the fuse trips then they will come out straight away and increase the size to 80A. So if the DNO will not upgrade the fuse unless it blows then what is the point of doing maximum demand?

    • @dsesuk

      I pay £60/annum. I don't really need to pay anything as that cost is for support and updates, so if the software works and I'm happy using old forms after any regs change, then I can save my pennies. There's nothing stopping anyone making their own forms or software to suit themselves if they have the time and skills to do it.

  • @johnsommer9818

    I completely agree with your views on the workplace suitability of unwieldy tappy-screen devices!
    As for the model forms... I didn't get that far looking at the DPC unfortunately.
    I have been working on my own test results schedule for single-phase installations created in a word processor using tables. My solution allows to keep detailed records whilst being considerably easier to fill in and read, is to split it across three pages. Page 1 gives the circuit description, conductor sizes, installation method, protective devices rating, breaking capacity, RCD rating. Page 2 is for dead test results, including R1+RN. Page 3 live testing results, including short circuit measurements, RCD tests (ramp optional) including comment on the type installed, finishing with the RCD and AFDD operation check boxes. It covers all the bases, adapting it for three-phase whilst remaining so comprehensive is proving tricky though!

      It's always a good idea while carpets are up to think of ways to futureproof yourself. Out of interest, Dave. If a client had pre installed cable for you at some poin like this, would you be happy connecting up to it without seeing how it's been run in the fabric of the building? Obviously assuming it tested out ok.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@evil-tom There's a fine line to tread. I don't certify anybody else's installation work such as when a builder says they've thrown in the cables, plastered the place up and they want someone to sign it off, however if someone wants me to utilise or repurpose an existing cable, then I can perform the inspection/testing and if no alarm bells are ringing the job can go ahead. The certificate would state that the cable run wasn't part of the job and it was an existing service repurposed for the task, so I wouldn't be taking on the liability for how that cable ran through the building any more than I take on that liability when performing an EICR. Due diligence is satisfied if the bits you can see and test all pass and the paperwork is clear about what it is you've done.

    The 0.4 factor for maximum demand comes from tables in the IET Design Guide, along with a formula to calculate a much more reasonable figure than the city & guilds sponsored crap in the onsite guide.

      I can't remember where that came from but it's common enough if you look on the forums. It may well be something thought up over a few pint glasses, but it generally seems to work for making up a figure for that box!

    Hi Mr Savery.
    Excellent video, as always. I just love your style :-))
    Nice to see someones view of EasyCert - I have previously looked at this software, but for some reason, did not choose it!!
    For your reference, many years ago, I chose to go with "PIR Form", which has now evolved into "Shine Forms". Possibly becdause it was discounted through ELECSA!! :-)
    Like ALL software, this has some failures & niggles. But I do manage to make good use of it.
    I like the feature of adding in comment lines in EasyCert - Looks quite useful.
    As for your F12 failure - There really, REALLY, should be an UNDO function for something as disasterous as this. I'm forever hitting F11 or F12 on my Logitech G915 keyboard, when trying to do a backspace!!!
    Keep up your excellent work...

    I recently tried NAPIT's certification software but I found it very clunky and frustrating. The software doesn't remember anything you've input in the past so EVERYTHING has to be input manually.
    Back to using trusty EasyCert and I'm a happy chap. Yes, it has it's flaws but it's easy to use and does the job well. 👍

    • @dsesuk

      The last time it happened, last Friday in fact on a commercial job and with a huge schedule ruined, I phoned Tysoft in fury to get an answer on whether there was a way to un-cock things, so the lack of an undo feature came from the horses mouth. As did the comment on the same call about F12 "not always being by the zero key", a point the chap on the phone insisted upon until I hung up on him. But that's software writers for you; their programming isn't iffy, it's just user error.

    • @Apex180
      @Apex180 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dsesuk Well that's shit on their part, undo is a basic feature api that every application i have used on windows had, so for them not to have that in this software is bloody stupid (its in the os level so why are they hiding it?); hmmm wonder if you can invoice them for your wasted time :D
