Love how aespa's title tracks are literally mini episodes of their lore, the story telling is present on both the visual and lyrics. It's evident that SM invested tons of money for aespa but it's all worth it and I hope they get ROI quickly. Btw, next level is a remake of F&F Hobbs and Shaw ost and it did level up. 😄
Aespa is literally on the next level
As with all the groups under SM Entertainment, their storylines and concepts are all part of SM's Universe, including aespa's storyline. It is even speculated that aespa's story connects to EXO's and SuperM's storylines. I think SM has set it up so that at least all of their third generation groups -- and now even fourth gen. groups, with the introduction of aespa -- have storylines that connect, link together and intertwine. Each group has their own individual storyline and concept, but when you put them all together there are threads of connections between the groups.
aespa's "Next Level" MV is designed to help explain a little more about what we saw happening in "Black Mamba."
As you just discovered, as part of aespa's concept, it is thought that anyone who does anything online has a virtual character that lives online that represents them -- everytime we do anything online we leave a piece of digital DNA which is what is used to create our digital selves or avatar.
As you can see, in order to understand aespa's storyline, you really have to pay attention to the lyrics of their songs, because the lyrics help to explain aespa's concept and what is happening in their MVs.
The way I see it is, there are two dimensions: aespa in the real world and their avatars (Kwangya) world. Aespa are connected to their avatars and everything the aespa members do in real life gives power to their avatars. However, because of the Black Mamba's temptation -- represented by the black snakes -- aespa and their avatars cannot connect through the SYNK app anymore, so their avatars become lost. Therefore, I think in "Next Level" aespa is on a mission to try and stop the Black Mamba hacker and find their avatars in order to re-establish a connection.
Fun fact: The song intentionally switches up in "Next Level" at that specific moment because, if you pay attention to the lyrics, it says "Naevis calling" which is referring to the fact that their avatars are summoning them to their Kwangya realm, so they teleport to the virtual realm (where everything is different) and then when the beat switches back to "Next Level" they are shown going back to the real world. Naevis is the creator and designer of the virtual world, sort of like the site administrator -- she is the avatar you see with the short hair. Which is why in the lyrics they say, " My Naevis ... where you lead we follow," etc., because they trust Naevis to protect them from the Black Mamba and protect the virtual word, etc. Everything SM does, even the most minute detail, such as the structure of the song is done for a very specific reason.
However, this is far from the first time SM has ever done mashups and had songs where it switches up the beat to a completely different song in the middle of the song. It started with songs like Girls' Generations "I Got A Boy," and they have done it with SHINee's "Sherlock (Clue & Note)", F(X) and Red Velvet and NCT/WayV songs, and even SuperM's song "One (Monster & Infinity)." It's a very signature SM style.
I also am starting to wonder if maybe aespa has something to do with the Tree of Life from EXO's storyline, because, if you notice, in "Next Level," you see aespa and their avatars with what looks like the mother tree from the Hollywood movie "Avatar." Therefore, I wonder if maybe aespa were made the guardians of the Tree of Life, tasked with hiding the two halves of the tree. So, maybe the Tree of Life is what the Black Mamba is after.
I think the Black Mamba maybe working with the Red Force from EXO's storyline, or it could be a separate evil being who also wants to find the Tree of Life and prevent peace from being restored in the Universe.
As we are told in the intro of EXO's debut "Mama" MV, the Tree of Life was split in half in order to prevent the Red Force from gaining control of the heart of the Tree of Life. However, things on Earth have gotten out of hand, so now EXO needs to reunite the two halves of the tree in order to restore peace. So, I think part of EXO's mission is they are on a quest to find aespa in order to reveal where the tree was hidden.
To understand how all of SM's groups are connected, you need to be aware that it all began with EXO's debut in 2012. As you may know, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from Planet Exo who have been sent to Earth on a mission to find and protect the Tree of Life from the Red Force, while also trying to fix all the things that are going wrong in the world, which are believed to be caused by the Red Force. The Red Force is thought to be here on Earth inflicting their evil agenda -- corrupting humanity and causing all the bad things that are happening in the world, such as war, hate and destruction of the environment, etc. And because EXO is trying to undo and prevent the Red Force from accomplishing their goals, the Red Force is also trying to take down EXO by capturing them, corrupting them and standing in their way, etc.
Some theories even believe that Red Velvet is connected to EXO's storyline. Some think that Red Velvet, EXO's sister group, could be the Red Force.
SuperM is the Kpop industry's very first supergroup which debuted in October 2019 and their concept and storyline is centered around the fact that they are Avengers-like superheros, so SuperM is the group that pretty much connects everything together. As part of EXO's story, Baekhyun and Kai -- who are members of EXO -- have recruited members from SM Entertainment's other male Kpop groups -- Taemin from SHINee, Taeyong and Mark from NCT and Ten and Lucas from WayV -- and formed SuperM, to help them battle the Red Force.
It is said that the concept for SuperM is supposed to be like the Avengers, so, I see it as each of the members are a different kind of superhero that make up the larger "Avengers" group, just like how the Marvel Avenger members come together from all walks of life with all different abilities and powers, etc. to make up one big supergroup.
Also, just like how the Marvel Avengers come together to combine their strengths and powers to help fight Thanos, I see parallels with what SM is doing with SuperM's storyline. SuperM is taking members from each group and joining forces to take down the Red Force. And just like how the movies "Avengers Identity War" and "Avengers Endgame" eventually had each of the Marvel Avengers members recruiting their whole crew to help in the fight, I think SM is setting it up so that all of its groups' members will eventually be brought into the fight.
Theories have also speculated that NCT's/WayV's dream concept and storyline also connects to EXO's storyline. As with everything NCT does, it all has to do with dreams, dreaming or something to do with being in a dream state, which could very easily connect to EXO's other world and other dimension theories.
Will aespa eventually join forces with EXO to defeat evil or will the Black Mamba gain control and cause aespa to team up with (Red Velvet?) and become members of the Red Force? We will just have to wait to see how SM connects the dots and draws the storylines together. But I have a feeling that, eventually, aespa's story will connect to SuperM's story, and, along the way, also EXO, NCT and Red Velvet's storyline, and maybe Taemin's solo work, and possibly even SHINee. (Even though SHINee is part of the second generation in Kpop, the members are the same age as third generation group members, so they sort of bridge that gap between second and third generation.)
I also see how SM is starting to draw even it's older groups and artists into the storyline. In the beginning of the "Aespa ep. 1 Black Mamba - SM Culture Universe" video we see clips of the pink planet from Super Junior's recent "House Party" MV and a scene from Super Junior-K.R.Y.'s "When We were Us" MV. And Winter and Sungchan from NCT star in Kangta's MV for the remake of H.O.T's song "Free To Fly," which you will see is a continuation of SM's SM Culture Universe storyline, etc.
aespa's story is just another one of SM's epic concepts and mysteries that we will have to wait and see where it takes us.

Fun fact: The SM Culture Universe concept is inspired by Marvel, so SMCU is not only for AESPA but for all SM artists and groups who will be connected later, such as EXO, NCT, Red Velvet. SM founder lee soo man said that at the SM congress event there was a discussion with a producer from hollywood who wants to make a film about the aespa universe, it's really interesting to see aespa and SMCU in the future.

SM production is next level
As was mentioned previously, this song is a remake of the song "Next Level" which appeared on the Fast And Furious: Hobbs and Shaw soundtrack. They obviously redid the lyrics so it makes sense to them. Personally, I think this version is much better because it has more punch.
Billlie has also put a lot of effort into their world-building. Between their two main releases (not counting their Christmas song), they have 22 minutes of story videos (11 minutes worth for each song since 11 is significant number in their lore). Purple Kiss with their latest release also put out two story films that tell the story behind memeM. Which are a Wes Anderson-style story of them as witches.
I think you probably got some comments about NMIXX being JYP's version of Aespa. You can probably see why now. While Black Mamba was a pretty straight K-Pop song, with Next Level they started to build that mixpop sound. SM does like to be experiential with their sound, which is always good for the industry.

@@kurokami9428 I would probably start with GingaMingaYo, their latest song. Their debut, Ring X Ring, while I enjoyed it, wasn't as well recieved. Snowy Night, their Christmas song is fun. Flipping a Coin and Rumor are probably two of my favorite B-Sides, but really all of them are great.
@@Dardove I think I’d still recommend RINGxRING first, since it is core to their lore, just noting that if its particular experimental bent doesn’t suit you to still try another song of theirs since they are _wildly_ different. Also pay attention to the lyrics and lore; the sound that turns some people off has a reason why it is there. I personally love the song, but I think even if I didn’t like it enough to keep it on my playlist, I’d still appreciate the hell of the storytelling and musical artistry involved.

Seeing how much you enjoy Aespa’s storyline I would definitely recommend Tomorrow by Together. One of their storyline music videos is 20 minutes long and they even have a short animation. Their storyline is really complex and fans love to theorize

With just 10-mins long video, everything became so clear. In black mamba era, everyone is sooo confused with aespa's concept. People call it nonsense and even call aespa as sm's downfall. SM agency is well know for thatkind of production . they often produce VR concert with hologramme and VR avatar of they're artist . they got they're own theater in they're agency .w e can go in the main building in this agency and buy ticket to watch some VR movies or SM artist concert . i watch this épisode during the AESPA official debut in that theater . it's an unique way to watch and listen music .

The base of the storylines of SM entertainment is EXO
These are the terminologies of æspa.
And also, later on after sm entertainment debuted them , they created a SMCU (SM cultural Universe) Like Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Important Terms:
æ - alter egos (their animated selves)
MY - the way they call each other
REKALL - their time together
FLAT - the æ's virtual world
SYNK - a medium that connects them to their æ (like when they use their devices [Synch])
SYNKOUT - the phenomenon where they can't connect to their æ
NÆVIS - an AI system that brings them together (She's like Iron Man's Jarvis, also Butterfly in korean is nabi)
KWANGYA - "a world beyond the FLAT that is an unprescribed infinite extent with no rule and form"
The Base Concept of the Story:
So the story is about a new technology where the data people upload on the internet is used to create alter egos (æ) of themselves. As mentioned in episode 1, these alter egos won't totally be the same as the real person. The professor further explains that your desire also plays a role in the process. This means a person can upload only the good things about themselves to create a better alter ego but also means a person can do the exact opposite. We also see that alter egos can also have a physical form. This concept is somewhat similar with Black Mirror's "Be Right Back" episodes (highly suggest everyone watch). In short, the first half of the episode shows us the good things this technology has to offer. A virtual assistant, a fellow gamer, or simply just a friend.
Conflict of the Story:
On the professor's phone, we then see a Black Mamba logo that forms æ. It is then followed by the phenomenon we call SYNKOUT. We notice that the æ all start to freeze, glitch, and then totally disappear from the physical world. Everyone are then unable to SYNK with their respective æ. The problem doesn't end there. Karina emerging from the water finds her æ with a menacing aura. With the words of the Black Mamba, Karina is then then caught under its spell. The latter half of episode 1 is about the downside of technology. A security breach, an anonymous hacker, or even the endangerment of human life and humanity itself.
Connection to Black Mamba MV:
Personally, it seems that the MV takes place simultaneously with episode 1. There we see the four members struggle to reconnect/SYNK with their æ just like in the latter part of the episode. The song is basically them singing to their alter egos thus the "I’m at the center of the world, You’re in the FLAT" line. My theory is that the girls are in the KWANGYA and are trapped. Here is where we first see Karina's eyes turn dark just like in the real world in Episode 1 when she was in the pool. There they find the Black Mamba and call out to their æ for help but couldn't due to the SYNKOUT. "If I could connect with you again, I want to meet you now." From what we've seen, the Black Mamba was still not killed and they still weren't able to SYNK with their æ. This could also mean that the girls are still stuck in the KWANGYA.
Episode 1 Post Credits Scene:
Here, we have NÆVIS assembling the æs to defeat the source of the problem which is in KWANGYA. They did not mention the girls being in the KWANGYA which makes you wonder how much NÆVIS actually knows. However, NÆVIS then shows us that she is the one making the portals through the different worlds. They now have a mission to go to the KWANGYA, defeat the Black Mamba, and save aespa.
Next Level MV Teaser:
We see the members riding a spaceship going to another place inside KWANGYA. We must take note that KWANGYA is an infinite extent which hypothetically means it's even wider than our own universe. This also makes one curious on where the KWANGYA is located and what the KWANGYA really is.
BIG QUESTIONS AND MAJOR PREDICTIONS:
● Who is the Black Mamba?
••• In a writer's perspective, the Black Mamba is the embodiment of man's carelessness with technology. Like in other movies, man's pursuit on greatness using technology leads to total chaos e.g., Avengers: Age of Ultron, XMen Days of Future Past, Terminator, The Matrix, I Robot, Upgrade, etc. The Black Mamba is NOT a person but an artificial intelligence. It is a side-effect of creating such advanced technology without assuring the safety of humanity.
● How was the Black Mamba made? and by Who?
••• Here, I'll be introducing the most potential antagonist of aespa so if you don't want to be spoiled, LOOK AWAY. First, I don't think the antagonist is gonna be coming from a different group as I see the SM groups to be in the same universe but having separate stories therefore different protagonists and antagonists. So if you focus only on what aespa has released, then it will become obvious. Who else has the vast knowledge and expertise of AI? Who else has the advantage against aespa? No, it's not the professor but the only AI herself, NÆVIS. Yes, I am right now accusing NÆVIS of betrayal. There's literally no other character we can point to. HOWEVER, that's not my only basis for this accusation. Take note that in episode 1 we see the professor say "I got disconnected in the middle of the class". This means someone else was intercepting the signal when he started glitching, the same time the SYNKOUT occurred. And guess who it turned out to be... NÆVIS, with a more sinister look and scale-like skin. Yet there is still a possibility that this is not the real NÆVIS but just a corrupted one, like the æ-Karina
● What are NÆVIS' intentions? What is her goal?
••• Now, let's put ourselves in NÆVIS' shoes. Imagine you are an AI that has unlimited access to information. In addition, you are aware that there are other virtual beings that exist just like you, the alter egos. However you realize that despite having the gift of infinite data, these alter egos have something that you don't. A physical body. She's blessed with knowledge but she's cursed to stay in the virtual world. In the beginning she asks "Where did WE come from?" as she identified herself to be one of the æs. But at the end she asks "Where did I come from?" as now she sees herself to be a rare intelligence. Worse, she sees herself as a superior being. She asks about her existence as this will be one of the main concepts of the story.
● What was that figure in the Black Mamba MV that crawled out of the virtual goo?
••• Let me remind everyone that aespa and the æ can exist in the real world, in the FLAT, and in the KWANGYA but NÆVIS can only stay in the FLAT. Therefore, I can say that the gooey figure that emerged in the KWANGYA was NÆVIS' attempt on creating her own æ. The KWANGYA is the perfect place as no rules exist therefore it does not require humans to create an æ. And unlike humans, she can create an exact copy of herself since NÆVIS is an AI which means she can upload every data about her which is what humans can't do. This means we might be seeing two NÆVIS in the future, the original one staying in the FLAT being a pretentious helper to humanity + another one free in the human world and with access to the KWANGYA.
● What could the KWANGYA truly be? Is it a real place? Another planet? dimension?
••• Definition: a world beyond the FLAT that is an unprescribed infinite extent with no rule and form. What does this sentence remind you of? This is actually a very real thing that all humans have gone to. KWANGYA represents the human mind. In some instances it could be our dreams, our nightmares, or just our pure imagination. In the human mind, possibility is limitless and breaks all the rules of logic and science. It is truly beyond the FLAT as it's somewhere technology has not truly ventured. But due to the creation of æ, there is now a link between them and their respective person. This theory is also crucial once we connect aespa with other SM groups, especially Red Velvet.
Also there is rumor and a theory that red velvet Irene and seulgi are portraying the roles of nævis and black mamba in the SMCU , and it was said that Nævis and black mamba are twin sisters.
Planned Message of the Story:
"𝙡'𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙘e𝙚 𝙡'𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚" = Existence precedes Essence. This phrase has been used by many philosophers on their outlook on life. Existentialism explains that a person is born (existence) before they find their value (essence). It means that you will only find the essence of your life if you make choices that make you feel happy and alive. To simply exist does not give you value. How does this connect to æspa? Well this concept does not just apply to people, but it also applies to objects and technology. In this instance, it is saying that the existence of æ is neither harmful nor helpful. But it is HOW we use the technology that defines its essence. Example, a pencil. If you let it be, then it's just a piece of wood. If you're writing with it, then it's an actual pencil. If you stab someone with it, it is now a weapon. This explains that technology can indeed be dangerous, helpful or both BUT it is always on HOW it is used that matters

SM try to create the KWANGTA verse . like the marvel cinematic universe . they want bring all they're groups and artist in that univers ( EXO , RED VELVET , GOT ,NCT ,GIRLS GENERATION OGG ) but it's very hard to de many artist from SM try to expalin the concept of this univers but so far nobody really understan what SM try to do . so far they got STORY LINE only for AESPA . many korean group got story line on they're MV's BTS ,DREAMCATCHER ,AESPA and some other . that why they're production are alway's on point .
watching your reaction i really think you would enjoy TXT (Tomorrow x Together)! not only do they have great music but their lore/storyline is amazing. i find their titles and all bsides amazing but you might enoy their latest album The Chaos Chapter: Fright or Escape the most. lots of rock elements :) a great music video example of their lore is "Eternally". Since its storyline heavy you want get the entire song in the mv. If you check it out I would listing to "Eternally" song first and then watch the music video. It won't be the beginning of their storyline but I think it'll be okay ^^ I REALLY want you to listen to their song "Frost". You would greatly enjoy it!! I bet on it ;) The music video doesn't play the entire song since its more storyline heavy so I would recommend watching the performance video first and then the mv :D okay i rambled enough lol
