When I got my dog, Rambo, I was told I was buying a pom, but I realized he wasn’t one when he wouldn’t stop growing lol. He eventually topped out at 23-25 pounds. I’m so glad I ended up with a German Spitz and not a Pom though. They’re so fun and goofy. It sucks how they’re hard to find. After my Rambo passed away, I tried forever to find another one but had no luck and eventually decided to get a Keeshond. To me, they’re pretty much the same. The Keeshond is just twice as big. They both have a lot of character. They’re smart, sweet, hilarious and sensitive. I love this breed.

Awe, I love that. It is too bad that German Spitz and other Spitz dog are hard to find. I had a Norwegian Elkhound, which looks a lot like a Keeshond that got me hooked on spitz dogs. They are incredible dogs. Thank you for sharing.

I miss my baby girl (Daphne, Spitz). She died suddenly. Many suspect along with me that Daphne died from a heart attack and I think I know why. I lost Daphne 1-year after I lost my Yorkie from cancer. Daphne grieved for our Yorkie so that caused her stress along with many other things that contributed to her death
I love you, Daphne and Mojo.
    Love, Mommy
Folks get a Spitz. You won't regret it

I am so sorry for your loss! Pet grieve tremendously over the loss of their loved companions both human or animals. It's sound like you lost your Daphne to a broken heart. Spitz dogs are incredible! I had a Norwegian Elkhound that I lost years ago. He made such an impression that I am drawn towards these fluffy curly tailed dogs. I hope the memories and love live in your heart and that Daphne and Mojo send a new love your way when the time is right. Thinking of you.

Rather an odd view of the history of each. First, Queen Victoria had Pomeranians as mentioned that were likely German Spitz bred in a particular manner and possibly with some other Spitzs breeds. The original Pomeranians were akin to the "mittelspitz" (mid size German spitz). Queen Victoria was gifted with a couple of dogs from Italy that she misnamed as "toy Pomeranians." These dogs were the inspiration for reducing the size of the Poms. The dogs in question were the Italian Spitz or "Volpino Italiano." Poms likely have a mix of German Spitz and Volpino to help reduce the size of the breed. Later, it was a matter of continue to breed down the Pomeranian. Be aware that in listing the various sizes of German Spitz there is the Zweig Spitz which is the "dwarf" Spitz that is in fact, the Pomeranian we see today. Btw part of the reason that Poms fur differs from the larger German Spitzes is twofold - the inclusion of some Volpino ancestry and dogs bred down will often have certain characteristics that are a mismatch such as fur density. Volpinos today are a rare breed with maybe somewhere between 4 - 5 thousand total internationally.

Thank you so much for sharing, this is a wealth of information. I'll be digging deeper into the info that you have shared. I had a Norwegian Elkhound years ago that sparked my love of Spitz.

Spitz dogs have gone through so many mixing that it's difficult to know which type of spitz you have!! I found that my spitz is a mixture of German Spitz and indian Spitz. As my pup is totally white, some say that his father has American Spitz bloodline 🐶🤷

It's so true. Even with my four Poms they clearly have very different genetic backgrounds.

Which one would you get? A pom or a German spitz
