      I am so happy to hear you say that! Incredible to talk to a real Irishman, many of the songs from the war are, in fact, Irish! We learned quite a few southern songs in school music class in the late 50's and early 60's, some confederate and some early 19th century. I guess today it is not done. I heard someone say once that if you loose your music, you loose your culture.

    When Mississippi seceded from the Union, someone raised the flag with a blue field and a single star above the capitol building in Jackson, proclaiming the birth of the Republic of Mississippi. This incident inspired the author of "The Bonnie Blue Flag" to write the song. "The Bonnie Blue Flag" lyrics were expanded as other states subsequently seceeded.

      What is now Alabama was initially a part of the Mississippi Territory. From it's inception in 1798, the Mississippi Territory had been envisioned to eventually being split into two states. (There was some debate about whether the Mississippi Territory should be split by northern/southern halves or eastern/western halves. The eastern/western split was decided upon mostly because most of the rivers generally flowed north to south.) Once the state of Mississippi was admitted to the Union in 1817 the Alabama Territory was established; Alabama later became a state in December of 1819. The Civil War did not effect the geographic organization of the two states.

    I remember hearing my great aunts talking about how their fathers argued about the war. They were strong for the Union until Lincoln announced invasion plans. The oldest uncle and the only slave owner in the family joined the 1st Alabama Union. My two great grandfathers joined the Confederate 51st Alabama Partisan Rangers and the 18th Alabama Infantry. My two great uncles were with the 10th Alabama and were killed on the same day at Gettysburg. My cousin J.J. Neely commanded a brigade under Forrest. Basically, all American music is based in Irish music, since SO MANY THOUSANDS (if not million) went immigrates to both North & South.

      @@HistoryBoy Man... I'm JUST FINNISHING the subtitles (in Greek) for this EPIC FILM!!!... Most are against this film, they calling it "Southern Propaganda", but they simply are morons!!!! This film is actually a BIOGRAPHY of one of the MOST NOTORIOUS & SUPERB American generals, the "Stonewall" Jackson!!!... The film is covering the first 2,5 years of American Civil War, which was PURE SOUTHERN all the way - the South had ONLY MAJOR VICTORIES in the battlefields, the North was suffering ONLY huge casualties & defeats in those two first 2,5 years!!!... So, why's is "propaganda"? It's PURE REAL HISTORY, the Southern boys were kickin' asses during that era!!!...
      Also, it's HUGE EMOTIONAL film, comparing with the (great) other film "Gettysburg" (which to me, actually, they looks like two films of a "dilogy"!!! Even the same actors playing the same characters!!!)... In "Gettysburg", we have only great scenes of warfare, of the battle... In this AMAZING "Gods & Generals" film, we have tones of amazing emotional moments! Not only the SUPERB scene between the IRISH BRIGADE vs the Irish boys of Georgia (ACTUAL happen, indeed these Irish fellas killed each other in that battle), but we have so many other incredible scenes, like the "Billy" meeting "Johnny" (the two soldiers) in the middle of the river and changing goods (cigar for coffee)!!!... We have the superb bond and emotional releationship of general Jackson with the young girl Jenny (that girl who died in the end and broke Thomas' hard)!...
      We have many great dramatic scenes, not "just" warefare scenes...
      ...About the South; why they've lost the war? Well, two words: Robert Lee!!!... Yap, the CSA general was their hero and God, but also their doom. Why? Because his SO MUCH HONEST & NOBLE character! Robert Lee (as many others, like Jackson or Longstreet) didn't like the civil war, they didn't like this brother-to-brother bloodshed. So, Lee simply remained on DEFENDING "mode", he was defending Virginia (and the rest South) but he wasn't AGGRESSIVE (or a bit ARROGANT) and move the war INSTANTLY and FAST to the Northern territory - he did it VERY LATE, almost 3 years later (Gettysburg battle)!!!
      That was a huge dissaster for the South. The South had MONEY, they had WEALTH, they had the plantations (food), yes... But, they didn't had INDUSTRY (North did), they didn't had MANPOWER to fill their cusualties (North did, many liberated blacks but most important EUROPEAN IMMIRGATS!), they didn't had GUNPOWER (weapons, canons, etc - North had much more)... and most important, South didn't had TIME TO SPEND (North had ONLY TIME, they needed as much as DELAY they could - and unfortunatelly Lee GAVE that much delay)...
      If South had INVADED NORTH in the 2nd year of War... now we would talking about TWO North America's nation, the USA ...and the CSA, with "Bonny Blue Flag" as banner!!!

    I’ve become totally immersed into the Civil War, the confederacy and its complicated history. My direct ancestors were all Confederates from North Carolina and Tennessee but I’ve got 28 total confederate ancestors (so far I’ve found). Two Yankees whose family moved to Missouri before the war. What has surprised me the most is how so many people on social media that squawk about it have such a rudimentary view of its complications, even in Reconstruction.

They also had the intent of alienating the African American citizens of those states and cities where statues were erected and had little to do with commemorating the dead of the Civil War. They left Georgia and headed West in 1861 to avoid war; as free men sent earlier in the 1700's in prison ships as indentured English prisoners they could not support slavery. As Scottish Highlanders they kept out of the Civil War, they lived peacefully as crofters with the Indians in Oklahoma when it was Indian Territory. • @JohnnyRebKy
      @JohnnyRebKy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      MrMike5814 Kentucky split into 2 governments. The state legislature had a majority vote for neutrality. The other half formed a new state government with Bowling Green as the capitol. Jeff Davis accepted them as the 13th Confederate state which is why the flag has 13 stars. The US Government did not recognize the confederate state govt and their secession from the Union. Therefore the US govt considered KY as neutral while the Confederate govt accepted KY as a state. So it depends on which govt you ask about it lol. As far as the CSA and the southern half of KY citizens are concerned they were Confederate members. The north KY population along the OHio wanted neutrality....mainly because they were in the crosshairs of being the front lines. A very similar story with Missouri. Both were fully recognized as full members of the CSA.

      Kentucky orphan Brigade Their is no argument about Kentucky. It’s a documented fact that it was accepted as a member of the CSA. The issue is that the US refused to recognize it as one. But the US refused to recognize all of them. They just called them states in rebellion and Lincoln never recognized the CSA as a nation.

      Scott History the only reasons the south split is 1. Taxation which was more of a minor cause and 2.because they were poor and depended on their agricultural economy since they couldn’t industrialize, the north attempted to take this away from them by ending slavery because the north wouldn’t feel the impact of abolition due to their industrialization. The south was merely defending their economy, but since history is written by the victory they are depicted as horrible assholes that wanted slavery for no reason.
