  • here i show you how i setup a single speed tensioner using a rear mech with some other tips
    update: i now use a spoke instead of the wire, you basically just slide it through with the nipple at the barrel adjuster. there is a picture in my community page/ig if you wanna see!

    Good show! I live in flat Florida and don't need shifts. I don't do sport biking but do value the bike for exercise. My derailler is rivetted and not easily disassembled; so I had to break the spring to remove it. Pity! It still dangles in its cage but does not interfere. I removed my shift cable clutter and installed swallow handlebars and a stem extension. Now I can ride upright rather than as a mountain-biker. Also, I installed a springy-seat. My mountain bike came with a front suspension. I am all set for comfort - like a Dutch boy biking in Amsterdam, but on a cheap mountain bike.

      If you want a recommendation to add to your comfort build my friend then I whole heartedly recommend Suntour NCX SP-12. I've owned one for 2 months now and it completely and dramatically transformed the bike. My hardtail feels like a full suspension bike when sitting down it's amazing for the price. Watch some youtube videos on it first it's an amazing seatpost.

    Easier method: longer screws for the limit adjusting srcews and you can put the derailleur the exact same position without using any cable.

    I had one of those black tensioners a cuppla years ago. It looked the tabasco, and it was cheaper than day old dims sims, but it was a bugger to install. I couldn't find installation pics, or instructions, anywhere. I ended up adapting a B-screw plate from a dead derailleur. I'd love to see how you wangled it.

    No need to use both pulleys. I make these with one pulley, one side plate, and the largest available single pulley. See my video. My version will also work with internal gear hub systems as shown.

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried it with one pulley on the old tensioner, but for jumps and stuff it kept slipping/loosing tension, but yeah probably good for just cruising around. I now use the magic ratio so I don’t have to run a tensioner at all which I recommend - have a video on that too if you’re keen

  • @r34d_

    Ive done this but it is quite noisy on a full suspension. Any tips? Also, would it be worth buying a proper chain tensioner with 1 jockey wheel, or is this okay

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mmm not sure , I’ve never tried on a dual suspension. If you don’t like the noise I think a single pulley would be quieter but dual pulleys help keep the chain on better

    Need help w this. I tried this method but the chain (master link) does not run clearly when going through the rd. All the aligning is good, just the master link having trouble going through the rd. Im using a single speed chain. May I know what chain your using on the vid.

    Pivot spring thing is cool but I don’t understand why u need to use a cable. Surely just blocking off the limit screws would do the trick no? Am I missing something?

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep that works too, you just need longer limit screws. You can also use a spoke too (on my community page). I like the cable because you can do easy adjustments when you’re out riding.

  • @duxxling103
    @duxxling103 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Late comment: Why not just leave the RD as it is, but remove the cable? Adjustment which cogs to be used can be set by using the screws to tune the RD before decommissioning it.

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes to do that you need longer limit screws which I didn’t have

    hey gary how do you keep the cut down gear cable inside the barrel adjuster im assuming its the nobby bit inside barrel adjuster ? thanks

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup that’s it , the derailleur holds it in because the spring is under tension and pulling on the gear cable

  • @davidstolkacevs871

    What singlespeed kit did you use at the back? All the kits I looked at recommend a 3/32” or 1/8” chain or does that not matter? Also, are you using this bike for mountain biking?

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi I just used one that came with the spacers, I think it was just a generic one off eBay. I use the 3/32 size as my front chain ring was for that size. This bike is apart, as I used some of the parts for the chute, I mainly use it to ride around and sometimes jumps and stuff

    Why are Single speed tensioners used instead of just shortening the chain like with Interna gear Hubs?

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably easier to install than a hub

    • @stonnoa
      @stonnoa ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@garysprojects still dont get it. Fixie bikes for example are Single speed but dont have a chain tensioner and they work fine. Why are Single speed tensioners often used with Single speed gravel bikes? a shortened chain would not slack on a gravel bike aswell, would it?

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stonnoa its because of how the drop outs are. Most fixed gears have horizontal drop outs which allows you to pull the wheel back and set the right tension. This frame has vertical dropouts which doesn’t allow that, however it’s possible to have a “magic” gear ratio with the right combination of cogs that matches up to chain length - thus not running a tensioner (I have a magic ratio video on my channel too) hope that makes sense cheers!
