    About this video:
    I have been adding some late summer and early fall blooming perennials to my garden over the last week. I recently went plant shopping and purchased a plant haul of late summer and early fall blooming perennials. In this video I took on a project I've been thinking about since last gardening season, removing most of my daylilies! I feel relieved to have removed most of them as they were no longer bringing me joy. I've made room to add other plants, and the daylilies will live on in someone else's garden. I know that dayllilies are divided into 2 camps of gardeners, those who love them, and those that don't. What are your thoughts on daylilies? Comment below. Thanks for watching - Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b) #gardening #plants #gardenanswer #perennials

    Good for you. I have over 40 and am waiting for cooler weather to remove mine as well. It was a season of my garden history but I want something different now. It took me a while to come to that decision. But happily seeking perennials that bloom more robustly and longer.

      Hi There! That is a great perspective, a season of our gardens! I absolutely love that!! It does take a while to decide, and certainly not an easy decision. It does open up new possibilities though, and we can continue to experiment in our gardens 💚

      Sister! It drives friends crazy when I remove something that's perfectly blooming. Sometimes it's too tall, too pink ,too wide.. I loved Stella D'Oro'd rimming most of my perennial beds but past 70..... last clumps seeking new homes this fall. Moving to more shrubs & grasses for ease of maintenance & water conservation.

      I literally just moved some day lillies out of a bed and put them in a less conspicuous spot on my land because I decided that their foliage looks nice til mid summer at best in 5b and then after that the flowers are already spent. Any thoughts anyone about good replacement plants for flowers with similar foliage that looks nice longer? Does allium foliage fair better for longer? I appreciate any ideas!

    I had to move my daylillies back further in the bed so that other plants hid the foliage, but you can still see the bloom poking out above the other plants. I also don’t like how daylily foliage looks. I also had a ton of “ditch lilies” that my grandma gave me. I really didn’t want to remove them because they are sentimental, but I just can’t stand the look of the foliage so I finally removed the last bunch of them this season. Sorry grandma 😂 I love how your flower beds are changing and love all the new additions!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great alternate solution Chelsea, similar to what people do with their spring daffodils and alliums as they can also look unsightly after blooming. Oh yes, those fulva lilies (tiger lilies), they go by many names. I know all about sentimental plants, I have an azalea that was given to my by my vavo (grandma in Portuguese) that I've battled azalea lace bug on and even had to move it a couple times but I wont get rid of it 💚Thank you!!

    Beautiful. I've been gradually removing my daylilies, too, for both reasons you mentioned. I now have a greater variety of plants that have multi season interest, natives and pollinator friendly. The deer don't seem to browse as much with daylilies replaced with deer resistant plants. You are going to love the blue fortune. It is so low maintenance, blooms non stop and deer and rabbits don't go near it.

    I recently dug up lots and lots of day lillies that were here when we bought our house. Two different areas. Took me quite a few days to dig them up and moved them to other areas of our yard and backyard. Replaced the two new open areas with a beautiful Little Devil ninebark, 2 cat's pajamas nepeta and 3 Veronica's. Other flowerbed I planted a beautiful Summer Wine Black ninebark which looks so beautiful against lighter green shrubs. Leaves are actually black but with deep red stems. Transplanted two purple salvias on either side. And some large rocks. Lots of work but came out. great.

    I’m on team remove the daylilies too, for the same reason. I put them in my garden as a pass along plant and have never really enjoyed them. I have a big drift of them near a wooded section of my driveway and the deer trim them back for me. Their only saving Grace is that they are planted near a lot Hostas and the daylilies are my sacrifice plant as the deer tend leave the Hostas alone for much of the season.

    I planted the rudbeckia gold strum 3 seasons ago and its in its prime right now. Quite a beautiful perennial. The flower is a pretty deep yellow and quite large. So easy to care for. Last year I saw a bunny nibbling on the edge of one of the stems so I immediately got our the milorganite. Its a wonderful fertilizer for the grass and also works great as a deterrent for bunnies and deer. I just lightly sprinkle it around the perimeter of all my garden beds and it works very well. I usually do it about 4 times every 4-5 days at the beginning of the season and then later on after a significant rain. They don't like the smell and move on. So easy I just take a big plastic cup, fill it with the fertilizer and sprinkle it along the edge of my beds right on the grass. Interesting as you can see a really nice section of green at the edge of all my beds. My son uses it in his spreader and covers his entire lawn. His neighbor uses True Green. My sons lawn looks healthier than the True Green.

    Funny that I know more than one person who is getting rid of lilies, in particular, and hosta also. It was a lot of work, but I did get to see most of my lilies bloom this year. And, I really don’t want to spray continually, and/or cover with netting, to see that. Just bought allium plants, one butterfly bush, and a dwarf crape Myrtle. That’s my start toward changing long standing perennials. I am going to buy hellebores in the fall and plant them in place of my hosta. I am going to keep my hydrangea and just cover every one of them. I also have at least ten Autumn Joy sedum, which thrive and self seed for me. They are huge, and the deer are eating the leaves. For water? Don’t know what I’ll do with them. Exciting but also expensive.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Debbie, It is! A tiny wine ninebark by @proven winners. Its a more compact version of the ninebark. Mine has been planted there for 2 years. It has a peeling bark for winter interest, and gorgeous dark red coloring that glows when the sun hits it just right. Happy October Birthday!! It is so hard to dig them up! Take your time, and it will eventually all get done. I fully expect to be digging up some small bits of daylilies for a while longer since I'm sure there are some bits and bulbs I left behind. I also still have about 4 clumps in my patio bed to get too at some point. All in time.

    @maureenmckenna5220 ปีที่แล้ว

    The deer like my rudbeckia in almost any form. It is my first year growing them and they did grow beautifully but the deer found them delicious too. I am debating keeping them but love the look. Are anemones deer resistant? Love yours and would invest in them if they are. Dahlias are new for me this year. Had one as a gift, Explosion, and loved it. Planted more and they have done very well. Slugs a problem but nothing else and I can deal with slugs. I also planted short ones and they are great too.

    I have the anemones and they are rather bullish, I’m constantly pulling them out. Will be interested to see if you have the same problem. I’m digging my day lilies out as well, they never do great and then just look ratty after they do bloom.

      Those darn Japanese anemones took over a corner of my yard. Come up with runners all over. If anyone knows a method to get rid of them please post!!!

      Hi Gayle, I find them easy to pull. While they haven't spread much for me yet, I did accidentally pull some of them when weeding. That's how I noticed they are a runner type perennial.

      Hi Joyce, While I haven't had them spread yet, I will be sure to report back in a couple years if I find that to be the case.

      Hi there! Yes, they are certainly a pass along plant as they grow well so are always candidates for division. We all start gardening somewhere, and learn these lessons along the way 💚

    Good Morning from Western Mass! Like what you did with this bed, but I have a question: I just bought two anemones. I thought they were more shade plants. Does this bed get more sun than shade? I’m holding off planting them for fear the labels were incorrect. 😊

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Christine! The 3 varieties I have are listed to grow in both sun and shade. Time will tell. The key to planting them in more sun is to ensure they have adequate water. Hope this helps.

    I've had the same issue with daylilies. Been pulling them out for the last two seasons. Those and other "Thugs" that just are too much work. Just looking for the workhorses of the flower world. What are your favorites?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree Gayle! my favorites that are low maintenance include Nepeta (Catmint), Salvia, Autumn Joy Sedum, Helen Von Stein Lambs Ear (gets large but has gorgeous color and doesn't blooms so doesn't spread by seed), also coneflowers! They look great for a really long time and don't need much deadheading, even their cones are beautiful to look at. Also, this year I have a new appreciation for rudbeckia.

      I started the seeds in little plastic cups with drain holes in them outside in early may, and then when they were maybe 3-4" I transplanted them out. I hope you love them! So far I think they are great! You can see the seedlings here on this video at 13:23... th-cam.com/video/kIW2rDQTpGI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IKSCixnOrLSg9iiE

    Were the Zahara Raspberry Ripple zinnias more difficult to germinate than other types of zinnias that are not mildew resistant?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, I did find that they did take longer to germinate, and I had low germination rates. I remember thinking I had only gotten roughly a 50% germination rate of all the seeds I sowed on this variety.

    I personally don’t like all that blank space in the garden beds. Looks like unfinished.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I look at it as an opportunity to think about what I want and to add it in. Its only going to look empty temporarily. If you notice the other bed I showed that is full, that is how I prefer my beds. After years of planting and removing/moving, I like to take a little bit to think on it, before planting. By next spring it will be full again.

    Guys I understand that it's your garden and you can do whatever you want....but how is this different from Bulbs? When planting bulbs, it's a good idea to plant with perennials so that the neighbors will mask the dying foliage and every year everyone gets all excited about their bulbs. This is a similar concept....it's a lily after all. What a shame. Hemerocalis rock!!!! Steph I let you know what I thought about your decision...😢 but it's your garden after all. That's sad.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Marc, Just like we don't all like the same foods, we don't all like the same plants. Totally ok to outgrow the like for something. Each plant has a season in the garden. Some longer than others. There are lots of Hemerocallis enthusiasts, I'm sure they have their reasons for loving them. They just ran their course for me. And I'm ok with that. I'm sure yours are beautiful in your garden.

    It's not aneNome. it's aneMoNe. It's not a matter of saying it your way, as someone commented last time, aneMoNe is how it's spelled. Pretty simple.
