So happy for you that everything worked out well. It's amazing how many of us finally come out because we fell in love. I remember telling my parents because my boyfriend and I moved in together and I knew I couldn't hide it for long but also I was so happy it somehow gave me courage. My Dad was also the macho type, veteran, major football fan etc.. I was shocked that right after I told him he said that he and my mother wanted to meet my boyfriend and invited us to dinner for the next week. All went well and I was happy. Next I had to introduce him to my 5 siblings who lived in NY so we flew up there. My sister organized a BBQ at her house and invited everyone over. My boyfriend was so nervous and told me he really didn't want to go but I insisted. After getting back to Florida he told me that BBQ was his favorite part of our 10 day vacation to NY. My whole family accepted him with open arms and he is just one of the family. in exactly one week we will have been together for 27 years so you can imagine what attitudes were like back then but my family is tight and they always have my back. I did not have to go through that on his side because he grew up in foster care and group homes and aged out when he was 18. He thinks of my family as the family he never had.
oakpkdude That’s a wonderful story. I still feel sad that my parents couldn’t bring themselves to meet the most important person in my life, my partner, back in the ‘90’s. It’s too late now and I still wonder about how much of my life they missed out on...what if...

We need more people like you talking about the importance of self acceptance and the family role as the first emotional support system for our young children.

I felt very identified this video, cuz i am in the same situation as Sal's. A pair of years ago i had an issue with my mom about some messages with some guys on facebook and my family is such a typical latin family with their patterns "machistas" and i told my mom that it was only aphase but now i am in love with my boyfriend and i plan to tell them that i love him and i want to have a story with him. Raw courage. Sorry to hear the fear that you had to endure for so many years throughout your teens from your parents. Even after you were out to yourself and had a boyfriend and were financially independent, you still had to deal with the scariness of coming out to your parents and relatives. That thought alone keeps many gay guys in the closet. But instead you looked that fear in the eyes and took that scary chance which most would never do. I had a friend who told me one time that she was always worried about me living by my self as she knew plenty of straight guys who would not think twice about beaten up a gay guy. I told her that that did not bug me as I was ready to bring on the fight if need be and besides, I would just point out to them that they probably have better things to do like chasing after a chick as well as letting them know that they are not my type as they are pretty dam ugly. A gay guy calling a straight guy ugly is pretty much a hit below the belt. .
