Funny, even the moment of "authenticity" at the end is of course him asking whether he stepped on the toes of the other actor that didn't exist because it was also him. A reminder that even the part that's "not acting" is still acting because of how many layers of artifice exist in content creation or any performance. And yet, the performance remains true despite or perhaps because of said artifice.

@Der Herr Seriös wünscht gesiezt zu werden you're right, it isn't. Not only because Olly states the name of the play quite explicitly, but also because it may be too much of stretch if one wishes to interpret it like that. The random appearance of authority without any explicit reason (i.e. the charge) did give the impression that it could be related to Kafka's novel... But the task our man undertakes here is *quite* different.

I’m a high school teacher and much of what’s explored in terms of parasocial relations resonates.
An educator in a student-teacher relation has to leverage a performative (often sunnier) version of themselves; in part because it’s an effective way to engage with and gain investment from our children, but also because we’re limited by the professional boundaries that dictate what’s an appropriate thought, affect, or mode of expression to reveal in front of a younger audience. In that vein, I see my existence vis-a-vis my children as a curated symbol-one that reflects my emotional truth but guided by a selective process of manufactured authenticity.
I feel as a teacher (or any public role) it’s important to model the best version of ourselves, even if that means being selective and strategic with how we emote, engage with others, and self-express. Our constant performance can make us feel disingenuous and manipulative at times, but your video reminded me that it’s OK-so long as we stay grounded in our emotional truth ❤️

I thought about teaching too! I agree with what you've said. As a TEFL teacher, I even moderate the language I use so that it can be more easily understood by my kids, even if it's not completely "accurate" to what I want to "authentically" say. I definitely have a "teacher persona" that's a little bit more happy than my typical non-workplace self. I can even recall specific lies I've told my kids. For example, if an 8 year old pre-intermediate English learner asks me what my favorite movie is, it would be confusing for me to answer with a movie they've never heard of (and for me to have to explain the plot and the actors they've never heard of - I usually pick a Disney movie from the past 4-5 years to answer that question.) Teaching is absolutely a performance, but I would be completely drained and tired out if I didn't bring myself to that performance. (Also, kids are sharp- they can feel when things are fake with you.)

nd4spd That makes me wonder if/when I overdo it.
It also raises an interesting question on how/why we find certain performances of authenticity grating while not others.
For example, do you find Ollie’s “inauthenticity” as a TH-camr annoying? (I feel personalities like Shane Dawson or MatPat can enter cringe territory with their performance sometimes.) Or does the question not apply because our relationship to him is more parasocial than an in-person teacher-student one?

A lie is a falsehood told with the intent to deceive. There are other kinds of falsehoods, like sarcasm or simply being wrong, for example.
Acting, writing, and other forms of art are a falsehood used to convey a message about a truth. Neither the artist nor the audience believes that what they are experiencing is literal reality, but rather an metaphorical experience that conveys a deeper meaning; by definition, not a lie.
As an aside, I absolutely despised the characters of the detectives. They remind me of my own ideal self (or selves) - the 'rational' one beating you up with the loaded questions and the abusive 'emotional' one doing its best to grind you into the floor. Neither caring about the actual truth; both only striving to shame and punish you. Its not often that I want to punch a fictional character in the face. You did an amazing job writing and acting them.

It doesn't feel as if it gets enough mentions, but seriously, great cinematography in this one! The use of values are on point!
Flat black/white for the interrogator stuck between binaries (truth/lies, right/wrong), and mid-range shades of grey for the nuanced author avatar. The two inspectors at first forming a yin-yang of contrasts (mostly white on black backgroung/ mostly black on white background) until they switch and rub against the previous harmony. Once drenched in their own elements, the wild and jagged leather broadcast the more personal, aggressive tone, while the stoic becomes almost uncharacteristically smug and condescending.
I found it especially interesting to interpret the characters as an Id, Superego and Ego trio. Eyes concealed (ruled by instinct and passion), one covered (narrowminded, strict absolutes) and two eyes wide open (complete - empathetic yet fallible)

    • @RaunienTheFirst
      @RaunienTheFirst 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That's... really insightful actually.
Quick question, can the Id, Superego and Ego be related to Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis? Id, Thesis (base urges, instincts), negation of Thesis to Superego, Antithesis (absolute ideas, strict regulation), then the negation of the negation to the Ego, Synthesis (the complete person, who can relate to others, form ideas and change them). And then, could this be an imagining of the stages of society as imagined by Marx? Id, Thesis, primitive man (animalistic, dominated by base urges) negated to Antithesis, Superego, class society (strict hierarchical relationships, codified and enforced laws and deeply held beliefs and traditions) negated to Synthesis, Ego, Communism.
Or have I been reading too much Žižek? Shniff.

I'm not sure if the they can be mapped out over a human's psyche however, since there's a distintly temporal aspect to the societal analysis (society changes from one standard to another), whereas a human will never be ruled entirely by any one part of their psyche. It will always be an amalgamtion of all of them.

I don't really believe in any rationalisable human "progress" it's all just random people doing stuff and we apply this notion of progress to make ourselves feel better about where we are and where we might be going. But it's fun to speculate.

"in my work as an author, I traffic in fiction, I do not traffic in lies, although I'll admit that the distinction is a nice one, and perhaps not easy for the layman to make. With fiction, with art, with writing, it's important that even if you're dealing with areas of complete outrageous fantasy that there is an emotional resonance. It is important that a story ring true upon a human level even if it never happened."

It's interesting to me, that I hadn't realised I was thinking about this, but even though I adored the cosmonaut video, I was aware of and thought about the fact that it probably took multiple takes, there was probably a script, but that doesn't really take away from it. I mean, you can't get more rehearsed and scripted than a song, but songs are some of the best ways to describe and get across a truth, emotional or otherwise, and it doesn't matter how many times the band has played it.

This is super interesting. It was around the 20-minute mark that I realised all this talk of para-social relationships can be applied to all kinds of fields and relationships, not just art and the internet. I'm a social worker and I end up asking myself about authenticity at work. I get to work with people long-term, and so we do end up getting to know each other and forming a relationship (although, I know a lot more about my clients than they do about me... just one of the things that contributes to the power dynamics that we have to be aware of). I wouldn't be able to sustain the work that I do without being bringing my authentic self to work, and yet I make conscious decisions about what I say and what I share. Naturally, we can present different facets of ourself to different people in different settings, and I like to think they could all be authentic.

The only kind of police interrogation I like: the one where they sit you down and grill you with philosophical questions.

Another beautiful work of art. As someone who moved away from the drama industry because of a lot of toxic bullshit in my local community, it’s super refreshing to see these concepts discussed in such an open and interesting way. Reminds me why I fell in love with performing to begin with. Things like that make all the crap I went through worth it.

"This section of the video here where you talk about some of the *really* personal things: how many takes of that section did you do?"
That moment fucked me up so bad the first time I saw it. It really sunk in to me how much everything in youtube media is curated, no matter how "authentic" or true it is.

How strange. This video appears to have a fifth wall.

Yes. She came out! The entire end section is double meta! It was all an act! (???) The little breadcrumbs alluding to her actually being a woman sprinkled all about her videos are spectacular.
