I so much agree with us, Czechs, being shy and yet being so happy being "bothered". I personally am always fighting with feeling of bothering an expat when approaching her/him, because that is they way I was raised. Took me couple of cases before I realized it is not unwelcome. This discovery brought me wonderful Venezuelan, Bolivian and Argentinian friendship:) And I am more than happy when I am approached by someone like that too!
Recently, I got a friendship with a Czech guy and he asked to me if I knew the difference between dark humor and brutal humor, like, he said something like that...hahahaha. Btw, I'm Brazilian.
To the "Talking good about CZ" point - It's more related to our history - wen went through hundreds of battles, then WWI, where we have freed ourselves from the Austria-Hungarian empire, then WWII, where we have suffered a lot, then 44 years of the "Soviet empire" and so on.. The list would be endless.. But despite all of these things we went through, foreigners do not know our country, or when they talk about us, they are still referring to Czechoslovakia etc, which bothers us a lot.. Because even compared to the rest of the EU, we, the Visegrad 4 countries (Czech Rep., Poland, Hungary, Slovakia) have a very special culture and history, which is a complete opposite to the rest of the EU.. For example in terms of our fiscal responsibility, Czech Rep. has the lowest debt compared to our GDP (29,4%) in the whole EU (Italy had nearly 140% before the corona crisis), we have the lowest unemployment in the whole EU for 5 years in a row (2,1% before the corona, 4,9% after the corona), there is a very strong nationalism in terms of Euro currency, means, we still have the Czech crown, though we could have the Euro since at least 10 years and we are the most EU skeptic land with about 80% of the citizens voting for the Czexit, we are the 6th safest country in the whole world etc etc.. But though all of the mentioned above, we are quite a "forgotten" country, in terms of the EU and the whole world.. And that's why we are so happy to see someone talking good about us...

Come on. 80%? Seriously? I think it's pretty overrated. Anyway I think we like listening about Czechia because we don't believe very much in our own country. We still complain how everything is bad over there as long as we move abroad. Then we find out it's not so bad after all.

Thanks for the tips. I'm an American living in České Budějovice and I'm 48 years old so most the people I meet my age don't speak any English. So it's really hard to be friends with such limited conversation. I'm learning Czech but I really think that until my Czech improves enough to have full regular conversations, I'm gonna continue to struggle making Czech friends. With that said, my husband's friend's wives are very nice and will try to talk to me a little when we are hanging out, but most the time, I'm sitting within the group, but not really communicating. :( I know it will get better as I continue to learn the language.

Hello, one year late, but I will try it anyway :) . First I would like to congratulate you for your choice, ČB is a great place to live and you dont hear about many expats outside of Prague. And second, just like Andrea said, keep trying. Her tips were good, also try to find some place you will like and become a "regular guest", you will see that will help a lot. Coincidentally we were talking about that with my girlfriend, because I have some foreign friends. Maybe, if you are interested, we could invite you to very interesting tea room right in the center and I think, that you would be surprised. Also, we are not that far from your generation, yet we speak english, not perfect, but sufficiently I think, and still improoving, I hope :) .
i went to a pub in auckland once with my mates (has a shit ton of czech expats and students) and they wipped our asses at shots and drank more then me and my mates combined im thinking about moving to brno but fuck cunt im not drinking like them
i think that it is the same as with help. some foreigners complain about it. but we really don't like to disturb other people in general. if you need help, just ask for help, plain and simple. same with this. i can say that most of foreigners are closed and look like they don't want to be bothered. it is as always about both sides. and some chemistry. i used to work in hotel and people very often start to talk with me. because i was the right man. they felt i could understand them and we have something common. same here, it is just basics of human relationships and society. you should atract or approach people which fit to you. making friends is such natural things...
But why talking to someone is considered as "bother" and something bad? If you are polite, smiley or have something, funny, nice to say, who would be bothered? Only miserable, dry and stiff people. Sometimes we are friendly to people just to be polite..... Ι am friendly to everyone at any time and love to be "bothered" unless of course i have strong reason not to, for example, at night in some dark street, beggars etc. I understand there are cultural differences but sometimes people just need to take it easy. In my trip to Prague generally people did not seem to be to easy going...

10 and 14 Absolutely! At a local 'Dance Ball' in January I was asked 'Why would you want to move from the UK to CZ?' and 'Are you going going to move back to the UK?' Czechia is a beautiful country, wonderful people and a place that feels more like 'home' than the UK. Return to the UK? (Okay I had to return due to house sale falling through and I've been stuck here since April) but NO! I have no intention to move back to the UK. Finding work is going to be interesting as is living with my in-laws, but I don't regret my decision and yes (if Jana ever sees this) we should have done it years ago.
People are not just shy ... the culture not talking to others pro-actively also has a history. During totality era (1948-1989) the comunists had their eyes and ears everywhere. You could not honestly talk to strange people, 'cause you cannot know if that guy is STB confident. So it was super safe to almost not talkting to others, too risky.
Maybe there is another thing related to this era, due to all that time over-positive (no matter how messed up things were) propaganda: Casualy complaining about your small everyday problems. If some friend asks you, how you are, you can suprise them by answering i.e.: "It's too hot today." or "It was really crowdy in the public transport." etc.
They are not at all shy. They simply are not as superficial as most cultures, and much more circumspect. Rattling on and on, with a silly smile pasted on one's face, as is popular here in the US, does not work well in the Czech Republic. They also see small talk about unimportant events such as the weather as highly superficial and it shows the person chatting on and on in a bad light.
The same as when a silly miserable and stiff face would not work well in the US and a huge part of the world. Anyway smiles and friendly attitude makes communication better and easier between people.
What Is "hapiness rate". Everyone Is measuring it subjectivelly. So if both CZ And Brazilian ar equally happy, one might have different interpretation of the scale. Also, many Eastern European countries have real issues, So pll might really feel miserable. Nobody Is saying they don't smile, we ar just saying they smile when they feel like it. I am smiling all the time, but every time, I feel like it, pll feel it's real And THEN it's easier. Never got a bad reaction. Ppl can tell if your smile Is real or not. Talking to pll with fake smile can be very cringy. Somes even find it insulting. Especially during bussiness meetings. Like is there any other reason to smile during bussiness meetings then trying to convince the partner, to get an advantage, or if u have real chemistry with the partner? Ppl can think u asslick And be like": "U think I am an idiot And Will give u a discount just cuz u smile", etc. It's suspicious. Like fooling ppI. Scum stuff. I am not surprised u got bad reactions. I mean, just be real, maybe your smile out of "politness" Is interpreted as manipulative or annoying.
Totally agree but i would point that most of peaople if you talk to them first they will instantly befriend you specially if you have good energy :) They open to you like a book. Remind not all people.
i'd say that best way to befriend czech people is to either work with them, or meet them in a pub. we are also very friendly for people who learned czech, because czech is a really hard. saying this as a czech PS: good luck trying to "drink like us" hehe.
Goliath cz indeed I haven’t thought of the work aspect cause when I worked in an office when I just moved there were 2/3 Czechs in the department but they would or be completely inside the expat world almost like an expat themselves or be very cordial at work but not engage in after work activities idk 😂
@@ArepasforDinner it depends on the job. if you work in an office where you barely have the chance to talk with your coworkers, then you know... you can't really talk with them. but if you for example work manually or in a close team, then it's really easy to interact with people and befriend them. also finding a common interest just breaks the ice instantly and rockets the conversation into the stratosphere. of course everyone is different, some people might be harder to approach, and some people are just not worth trying to befriend. also small talk exist, but it is usually a conversation starter more than the main part of the conversation

Well Czech man has still gallantry in them, and if you will invite them for shot or drink, they can start to feel uncomfortable and little bit, idk if is it correct word but, "ashamed" ? In CZ is emancipation farer, than in lot of countries, but not as that far... :)
Main sports: Hockey, Football. And don't buy your friends shots (We don't do that here :D) becouse Its kinda weird (little bit scarry) when women buys shots. Hope it helps :) That music is rly outdated. Try Chinaski or Mandrage.
One more about no. 9: If you think they don't want to talk to you, it is OK. We are not much communicative first hour or two. We like you, but it takes some time for many of us to start talking to you. Don't be annoying, keep small steps and give it some time. Dark humor is the ice breaker. This is how you get our heart. And if you are going to stay, it is much better.
About shots, we have that thing called turns. In makes everything simple you buy one round, all the others buy one round. At the end the bill divided by number of people. Also if you dring something that is more expensive that what everybody else drink (forexample Jager or Whiskey), no problem. You just have to buy 1st round. :-) (This wont work if you drink 100 crowns rum and all the others 40 crowns slivovice) :D

Well, i think this tips are not very good bcs. out of prague peoples are different and it works for younger people. For example, dark humor... for younger people ( >30) is good but for older is cringe or sometimes schocking. So i would be carefull with this tips.

Finding work is going to be interesting as is living with my in-laws, but I don't regret my decision and yes (if Jana ever sees this) we should have done it years ago.
People are not just shy ... the culture not talking to others pro-actively also has a history. During totality era (1948-1989) the comunists had their eyes and ears everywhere. You could not honestly talk to strange people, 'cause you cannot know if that guy is STB confident. So it was super safe to almost not talkting to others, too risky.
Maybe there is another thing related to this era, due to all that time over-positive (no matter how messed up things were) propaganda: Casualy complaining about your small everyday problems. If some friend asks you, how you are, you can suprise them by answering i.e.: "It's too hot today." or "It was really crowdy in the public transport." etc.

They are not at all shy. They simply are not as superficial as most cultures, and much more circumspect. Rattling on and on, with a silly smile pasted on one's face, as is popular here in the US, does not work well in the Czech Republic.
They also see small talk about unimportant events such as the weather as highly superficial and it shows the person chatting on and on in a bad light.
Probably you are right!! So at least you know if they are smiling at you they are being honest :)
The same as when a silly miserable and stiff face would not work well in the US and a huge part of the world. Anyway smiles and friendly attitude makes communication better and easier between people.
What Is "hapiness rate". Everyone Is measuring it subjectivelly. So if both CZ And Brazilian ar equally happy, one might have different interpretation of the scale.
Also, many Eastern European countries have real issues, So pll might really feel miserable.
Nobody Is saying they don't smile, we ar just saying they smile when they feel like it. I am smiling all the time, but every time, I feel like it, pll feel it's real And THEN it's easier. Never got a bad reaction. Ppl can tell if your smile Is real or not. Talking to pll with fake smile can be very cringy. Somes even find it insulting. Especially during bussiness meetings. Like is there any other reason to smile during bussiness meetings then trying to convince the partner, to get an advantage, or if u have real chemistry with the partner? Ppl can think u asslick And be like": "U think I am an idiot And Will give u a discount just cuz u smile", etc. It's suspicious. Like fooling ppI. Scum stuff. I am not surprised u got bad reactions. I mean, just be real, maybe your smile out of "politness" Is interpreted as manipulative or annoying.

Totally agree but i would point that most of peaople if you talk to them first they will instantly befriend you specially if you have good energy :) They open to you like a book. Remind not all people.

i'd say that best way to befriend czech people is to either work with them, or meet them in a pub. we are also very friendly for people who learned czech, because czech is a really hard. saying this as a czech

Goliath cz indeed I haven’t thought of the work aspect cause when I worked in an office when I just moved there were 2/3 Czechs in the department but they would or be completely inside the expat world almost like an expat themselves or be very cordial at work but not engage in after work activities idk 😂
@@ArepasforDinner it depends on the job. if you work in an office where you barely have the chance to talk with your coworkers, then you know... you can't really talk with them. but if you for example work manually or in a close team, then it's really easy to interact with people and befriend them. also finding a common interest just breaks the ice instantly and rockets the conversation into the stratosphere. of course everyone is different, some people might be harder to approach, and some people are just not worth trying to befriend. also small talk exist, but it is usually a conversation starter more than the main part of the conversation

About shots, we have that thing called turns. In makes everything simple you buy one round, all the others buy one round. At the end the bill divided by number of people. Also if you dring something that is more expensive that what everybody else drink (forexample Jager or Whiskey), no problem. You just have to buy 1st round. :-) (This wont work if you drink 100 crowns rum and all the others 40 crowns slivovice) :D

Well, i think this tips are not very good bcs. out of prague peoples are different and it works for younger people. For example, dark humor... for younger people ( >30) is good but for older is cringe or sometimes schocking. So i would be carefull with this tips.
