Beautiful job man! I've used white vinegar on an Estwing hatchet with good results. I let my hatchet soak for three days, wiping corrosion off every day , and then wrapping it back in the paper towels. It actually left some lines in the metal that look pretty cool. But that tiger stripe is SWEET! I have an ESEE Izula that's gonna look a whole lot different by the weekend. Thanks man!
Thats 3 vids of yours in a row that iv not only hit the like button for but, also added to my Fav's, your a bloody champion brother. Thank you for sharing your knowledge so the rest of us can try. That turned out really nice, well done Gav, cheer and best wishes bro
you have such a great way of explaining things, and making them simple enough for anyone to understand. your like the bas rutten of knives...and not because you have an accent.you just have this way you teach things that makes them very accessible and simplified. thank you gavkoo. you have one of the best youtube chanels. hopefully I can buy a knife from you one day. awesome stuff man.
You and couple of others here on youtube have been a great inspiration for me to start making my own knives soon... your videos are great, you are down to Earth and your English is perfect... keep up with the great information you share brother, a lot of us appreciate and benefit from it... ;)~
This is an excellent and informative video. Your demonstration is inspirational to a novice like me...a seemingly daunting procedure made understandable. Perhaps this will be a future addition to my to-do list . Thanks!
amazing! thank you very much. i bought a schrade schf9 a couple onths ago, and i've been trying to figure out how to get the coating off. you've earned another subscriber. again, thank you very much. you've just opened a whole can of worms for me.
Hey gavkoo, im going to do this to my BK-2. after seeing that stripper take off that coating it made me wonder, how strong it is. how did you wash off the knife afterwards? Just a good wash with dish soap? Great Video, Thanks!
Very cool vid, you make it look easy enough. You probably already know but now KaBar is making a BK24, a BK14 with no coating made out of D2. for not much more money.
Patina does help with corrosion but it will still rust, just not as easily as new shiny bare steel. The coating that companies put on blades are an air/moisture tight seal on the metal which prevents rust almost completely. The coatings work better but patina looks waaaay better. Hope that helps.
I have a Ontario Afghan and it's powder coated and I hear you cant strike a ferro rod, after I strip it with the stripper do you have to do the patina?? Or can I just oil the blade to protect it from rusting???
Do you use vinegar to finish off the patina on the rest of the blade for all of your knives that have a forced patina? I really like the design you did on the BK7 in one of your other videos, it was inspiring and beautiful. I just bought the BK2 & BK7, and I think I'm gonna give this a shot. Great videos, keep it up!
hey gavkoo did u get that neck knife from ryan lol it was originally mine but i didnt want it was to small what do you think about it i had sanded down the handle some because didnt feel good in the hands
I’m trying to do this to my ka bar fighting knife. I left it over night and weirdly enough the stripper worked on parts of the hand guard, but not on the blade at all. I even tried scraping it with a scraping sponge and nothing. I followed the instructions, and my only thought is maybe the temperature is effecting it?(it’s very cold around 20-40 right now) but why would it work on parts of the guard, and not the blade?
some of those coatings are so rough it makes cardboard cuttingmore difficult. im not a fan of those coatings. i got to play with the paint strippers when i worked at an autobody shop. good stuff. the paint would just fall off.
Why did you use the paper towel? Is it OK if I just put white vinegar over the blade without the paper towel? I don't want the dots to show up on the blade lol
Really well made and insightful vid. One question... Woul this work on teflon coating that cold steel uses? Its flaking on my ak and im considering removing it.
sweet vid mike, man i really like the becker i think my next knife is going to be a fixed blade, which as u know ive wanted to get, but damn am i ever loving the bone collector, dont hesitate on getting one if u got the money, its a kick ass knife
my friend- I really like your videos. very informative and very simple to do. you helped me make my first kydex (well, not kydex, but another type of plastic with similar properties) sheath and more! you are very good with your hands. waiting for more knife videos! by the way, do you know what kind of finish non-mirror and non-coated knives have? I am trying to avoid rust, and I don`t like mirror finish or TiNi coating... thank you! P.S. your English is grate. don`t be shy...
waited like 20 minutes and when i went to scrape the paint off it only took some paint off now the whole knife looks like a really really dark grey what did i do wrong>? its a cold steel tanto gi btw please reply
would this technique work to remove only half the paint off a knife, say a saber grind, leaving the top still covered? If i protected that paint with masking tape and plastic . do you think the stripper would eat through the tape? your thoughts would be much appreciated
That was very informative and helpful. I was trying to find ways to remove the coating from a kabar next gen, but I am a little hesitant since I cannot remove the handle. I was thinking of putting around some kind of tape but probably that will not protect it. If you have any idea I would appreciate if you shared. Thanks for the information and keep up with the great videos.
cool, glad to hear them man. i really appreciate your kind words and im happy that i could have "help". there is couple ways to get rid of shiny finish without actual coating. patina on carbon tool steels or pcb acid wash/bath...
Hey Gav, Great video! Ive dome everything you've done here and I can get the coating off, Im doing a BK9 and a SEAL Team Elite by SOG, that coating by SOG is like kryptonite! I believe SOG when they say how tough this coating is, I even double sanded both blades, any tips? Be safe brother.
patina is actually form of rust. maybe your vinegar was too strong and oxidized too much. try wiping and cleaning it well with soap and dish scrub thingy and if you dont like how it looks, sand it off slightly and try again with weaker vinegar.
I prefer natural patina. I really only force a patina on blades that are useless in the kitchen. by the way throw it in the microwave when you're not doing a design, speeds it up tremendously.
the coating removal went like a charm. but it seems to me that aus8a is mustard resistant. seems to me i'm gonna have to find a stronger acid for the pattern etching ;)
it disrupts rusting of the blade. a patina in a naturally occuring process that will happen over a period of years. this is why you see them saying, "forced patina". they're doing in an hour what might normally take 5-10 years.
@MsJacktrade i think sog uses something like dlc coatin or similar and this wont work at all. Bk9 should work easy. No idea what i could advice for your sog, sorry
does anyone know if the jasco coat stripping chemicals affect the edge or the metal? if it where some kind of acid it would eat the edge off so thats why im wondering
Don´t bother with the sarcasm, I was jus empathizing because it has happened to me, english isn´t my native language either, and I dont even live in an english speaking country...but hey!, at least I got a response, that´s a lot more than I can say about other comments. take care.
patination is a form of black oxidation. red oxidation (rust) cannot form over black oxidation, so it essentially gives your carbon steel knife a similar protection as a stainless steel knife. That being said, still oil your blade (with mineral oil, or baby oil if you must. no vegetable or olive) for rust prevention, because the blade edge is likely to wear down and show raw carbon steel after extended use. As far as durability of the patina is concerned, it IS the metal. no coating. go wild.
@gavkoo .. i do plan on buying the resin for micarta today :) and i have a really cool project in the waiting and i will be doing something to my becker necker that involves making the handle to a full four finger grip :) then i am going to send them to you for sheaths :p

Rub it off. Forget the haters. You rock, Gav! I support you 100%. Tell anyone that messes with you to talk to me!

Cool video, nice job,, and the Russian accent makes it even better. Keep it up Gav
Slavic accent, Russians are Slavs like Czechs, Serbs or Slovaks. And Michal is Slovak not Russian
This is an excellent and informative video. Your demonstration is inspirational to a novice like me...a seemingly daunting procedure made understandable. Perhaps this will be a future addition to my to-do list . Thanks!
I absolutely ALWAYS learn something from your videos. Thanks for another great tutorial!

Great Video,

This video has to be the best result of doing a patina on a knife I have seen. Thanks, Will try this process for sure.
Very cool vid, you make it look easy enough. You probably already know but now KaBar is making a BK24, a BK14 with no coating made out of D2. for not much more money.
That looks really good! Thank you for the demo.
I love that patina man... great job.

Very nice of you to share this Gav
another Gavko video added to my favorites list .. great vid brother
I used this method to do a sweet multi layer patina on my kabar zk war sword knife and it came out great. Thanks man.
Hey do you think this process will work on the cold steel machete's "baked on finish"
Great jobb and great video must try this out looks very nice!
I have a Ontario Afghan and it's powder coated and I hear you cant strike a ferro rod, after I strip it with the stripper do you have to do the patina?? Or can I just oil the blade to protect it from rusting???
@grimblemonster it does help. Not rust proof but it helps
will it help prevent rust on its own or should i still use it will oil???
It's a very good video... thanks and congratulations
Need to do this to a Mora I just picked up , thanks for making the video . You do great work gav really enjoy your videos keep it up!
@gavkoo hey um i have a tops steel eagle 111a should take off the coating..without the patinas will it rust alot faster
Sweet how too. How long does this patina last under normal use?
Do you use vinegar to finish off the patina on the rest of the blade for all of your knives that have a forced patina? @kmetvhribih yep, should work like a charm on cold steels coating
Why did you use the paper towel? Is it OK if I just put white vinegar over the blade without the paper towel? I don't want the dots to show up on the blade lol
that is pretty cool! Looks like a great way to customize a knife while also protecting it!
every time i see a vid like this i want to do that to my izula,
awsome job man,
i want to do this to my eskabar too! how is the patina holding up now?
Sorry for being a noob, but is it possible to force a patina on a KABAR USMC?
how would i create a solid patina? i would like as solid a color as possible with as little blotches as possible
So nice. Great video. I am going to do this on a couple Opinel French made folding knives.
Really well made and insightful vid. One question... Woul this work on teflon coating that cold steel uses? Its flaking on my ak and im considering removing it.

Bri w look at preparedmind101's videos of how he does it, you might find it useful

Great video man, you make something so beautiful look so easy
the patina stays forever or no?
Will this work for more than one coating
Hey Gav, Great video!
Ive dome everything you've done here and I can get the coating off, Im doing a BK9 and a SEAL Team Elite by SOG, that coating by SOG is like kryptonite! I believe SOG when they say how tough this coating is, I even double sanded both blades, any tips?

does this protect against rust?
does anyone know where you can buy that paint stripper at?

have fun with it man, its a cool little mod.
"hogue covered with stripper"... that sure sounds good man :) hehe
How did I miss this vid? Great stuff, I'm looking at some future projects right now and this will be a big help. Thanks gavkoo :)
@gavkoo how can i remove the coating easily without paint stipper
will apple vineger work?
the coating removal went like a charm. but it seems to me that aus8a is mustard resistant. seems to me i'm gonna have to find a stronger acid for the pattern etching ;)
why does this knife have both BKT and ESEE stamped on it?
and would this harm 154-cm steel thanks
How durable are these patinas?
Great video, like the paper pattern on the reverse very cool got some wicked ideas now on the back of this cheers !
it disrupts rusting of the blade. a patina in a naturally occuring process that will happen over a period of years. this is why you see them saying, "forced patina". they're doing in an hour what might normally take 5-10 years.

Any ideas how to remove DLC coating off aluminium?
thank you. thats great to hear and i really appreciate it. makes me happy to hear that. cheers!
Good tips and a great video man!!!!
does anyone know if the jasco coat stripping chemicals affect the edge or the metal? if it where some kind of acid it would eat the edge off
so thats why im wondering
it's not an acid, it's a solvent afaik
the mustard and vinegar mix worked great but made knife stink how do i get rid of the smell
Lemon juice.
Wd40
👍 really helpful
@pipesterNCH Yes, it works very well.
The best patina is the "used" one !
MahiMahi308, use some edge lock painters tape and tape over the handle, or any part that you do not want to remove the coating.
Great video!! I just received my BK-2 and plan on using the same process.
So this only works with carbon blades? How about a 440 stainless?
stainless won't patina....atleast not the stainless blade I tried.
I'm really surprised only mustard and vinegar can make such a great look ! Nice job !
Hi gav, i was just wondering, does this work with teflon coatings?
You should try brake cleaner, it may be cheaper then the stripper.
Don´t bother with the sarcasm, I was jus empathizing because it has happened to me, english isn´t my native language either, and I dont even live in an english speaking country...but hey!, at least I got a response, that´s a lot more than I can say about other comments. take care.
Awesome video brother! thanks for sharing!
very cool, might do this to my eskabar :)
Can you do this on Pvd watches?
Would this work good with Microtechs coating i want to do this please respond!.
patination is a form of black oxidation.
red oxidation (rust) cannot form over black oxidation, so it essentially gives your carbon steel knife a similar protection as a stainless steel knife.
That being said, still oil your blade (with mineral oil, or baby oil if you must. no vegetable or olive) for rust prevention, because the blade edge is likely to wear down and show raw carbon steel after extended use.
As far as durability of the patina is concerned, it IS the metal. no coating. go wild.
How about removing PVD coating on a knife?
instead of a metal brush.. i scraped it off with a putty kni\fe in less than 20sec per side of my bk2
yes, the patina helps fight rust, but i still have some oil on my blade.
badass video time for mine now
Would this work on a knife with a red coating ?
I got mine at ACO hardware. It was about 6 dollars.
awesome tutorial man soon gonna do this to my homemade m9 bayonet
Hey guys, is it harmful to use knife with coating for preparing food? Thanks!
Check out nutnfancys "garuda" video, he has a coated knife used for food prep,
So definetly not!
YES! It's paint, paint contains cancer causing chemicals.
OUTDOORS ADDICTION it’s not necessarily paint. A lot of coatings are fine for example enamel is used in dishes and cutlery often
@gavkoo .. i do plan on buying the resin for micarta today :) and i have a really cool project in the waiting and i will be doing something to my becker necker that involves making the handle to a full four finger grip :) then i am going to send them to you for sheaths :p
you again! haha. I search another tutorial and there you are! hehe
Nice Tutorial!
Try cutting a pineapple to get the patina. Always worked for me.
You rock dude
