1:18 Hwang Su-Il, who is the motion-captured practicioner TMM talks about, is of Korean ancestry but is actually a Japanese citizen. As far as I know he still teaches in Tokyo at 'Hwarang Hwang Taekwon-do Club.' [EDIT: if you want to see some videos of him, please refer to my reply to Bank21khz in this comment chain.]
P.S. 'Hwarang' is the name of a group of Korean warriors from a long time ago, and is also the name of one of the patterns(forms) in ITF style taekwon-do which Hwang Su-Il practices. In the game Hwoarang's dobok outfit is similar to that of a 4-6 Dan ITF teacher, with the black stripes on the sleeves of the arms and pant legs.

@@21kHzBANK21kHZ No problem, here is some more info to help you! I put video links at the end of this comment which you can watch instead of reading and probably understand enough as well.
Many moves in Tekken are motion-captured: a real person wears a special suit which tracks different parts of your body, and this data can then be used to animate the game characters. For Hwoarang they used a person named Hwang Su-Il. I don't know exactly if he was born in Korea or Japan, but his family is originally from Korea and he lives in Japan. I think that currently he is a 7th Dan black belt in ITF taekwon-do.
There are more details to the story, but basically there are two major federations for taekwondo: World Taekwondo (WT) which is very popular and seen in the Olympics, and the smaller and less-known International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF). Note: if you see 'taekwon-do' it usually refers to ITF style, whereas 'taekwondo' usually means WT.
In ITF, the traditional movement sequences known as 'kata' in karate and 'poomsae' in WT taekwondo are called 'patterns' or in Korean usually the word 'tul.' The patterns are named after things of importance to Korea, such as historical figures, locations in Korea, etc. The pattern first taught to red belt students is called 'Hwarang' and is named after a group of Korean scholar-warriors who lived in the ancient kingdom called 'Silla' ~1000+ years ago.
In taekwondo the training outfit which many Japanese-style martial arts call a 'gi' is called a 'dobok' in Korean. The white outfit you see Hwoarang use in this TMM video for example is close to, but not exactly, like a dobok which a 4th-6th Dan black belt instructor would use in ITF; 1st-3rd Dan doboks in addition to having the black belt have black stripes around the waist area, basically at the bottom parts of the jacket. 4th-6th Dans also have black stripes running down the arms and legs, like you see in the Tekken outfit. For 7th-9th Dans those stripes on the arms and legs are no longer one big stripe but instead two smaller ones. Note: the dobok worn in WT style taekwondo is different to ITF doboks.
      Video links:
th-cam.com/video/DIoozmWRXZk/w-d-xo.html - Short comparison video of some Hwoarang in-game moves and Hwang Su-Il performing them in real life.
th-cam.com/video/3Bxxj5JPCfs/w-d-xo.html - Hwang Su-Il teaching kicking techniques and practice drills somewhere in Japan (maybe in Tokyo at Hwarang Hwang Taekwon-do Club.) Note: Hwang Su-Il is the only person in this video with the 4th-6th Dan dobok with the black stripes on arms and legs, the other black belts do not have those stripes as they are max 3rd Dan.

So, I'm 25 right now. I started playing Tekken in Tekken 3 when I was 4 years old. King was my first love, but I distinctly remember going through Hwo's movelist and getting the 10 hit combo and listening to the sound of the commands as it was being executed. To this day, I can still hear the beeps from each command. Man oh man, were those the days. Also, I realized I was doing tech catches with Yoshimitsu very early in life with his Meditation teleport to tornado back throw, or his ghost throw from side.

At 4 years old? Damn, you must have some good coordination.
When I was young, I had Tekken 5 and I would play the game by spamming 1+2 on every character and then being confused as to why it doesn’t beat the opponent.

      @john-tobeymaguirecena 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Isn’t that cool? To hear all these terms like “tech”, “mixups”, “punishes”, etc... yet, we were all doing this already at a young age without knowing terms or having TH-cam to search “techs”....
I remember when my Dad Introduced me to tekken 3 as a kid. He taught me the concept of “punishing” before he even knew it was even a thing lol.

@@lightningangel45 so it started with my dad. Used to beat the hell out of me with King, so he goes to work and I resolve to beat him with his own character. So I spent HOURS in practice in King's sky ring, and Dad comes home and I BEAT HIS ASS.

Garry Callis so with my Dad & I, I used to watch him wreck the arcade mode, then I would play when he went to work, I would do well but then would get wrecked by heihachi or ogre in arcade mode. I was so young I used to get mad and cry & curse heihachi out lmaoo. But then my Dad started watching over my gameplay & would offer tips & advice. Next thing you know I was Marshall Law Flip-Kicking my dad from wall to wall lol.
He used Marshall or Yoshimitsu. I followed his footsteps & those were my first two characters i was good with. Now, 20some years later, I’ve used *almost* everyone in the game. In Tekken 7, my Main is King & Kazuya. I feel so nasty with King I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing with him now. But I will never forget Marshall laws command list lol. Since tekken 3 days....
As for my Dad, he hasn’t picked up a controller in years lol. & I can’t help but think, as I watch my babies watch me play tekken, is the cycle going to continue?...

Great to have so many people with fond memories. But its not true that you couldnt look up stuff. 1998 when Tekken 3 came out the FGC already existed for a long time. Street Fighter 2 launched 1991 and arcade culture existed in the 80s already. There was internet already in 98 of course and a mass of websites explaining advanced combos, techs, punish, zoning etc already existed. There wasnt TH-cam but before TH-cam we used the internet to get all our info on websites. Tekken 3 was already the 3D age of fighting games long after King of Fighters, Street Fighter etc.

KenjiCBZ the time to learn the character and time to learn the match up have a big disparity, putting all the responsibility on the opponent. Most hwoarang players that tell you to “learn the match up” dont even know how to counter their own char, and they have tools that allow them to panic other characters moves. So at the end of the day hwoarang players want you to learn other char but they dont learn the other match ups, cant react to snake edge but want everyone to react to backlash.

    1. Jin (Gi / Motorcycle Clothes)

    3. Paul Phoenix (Motorcycle clothes)
Honorable mentions for Eddy Gordo (Tee Shirt & Shorts) and Heihachi (Fur coat & White suit)

Man, Tekken 3 was the hugest turning point in my life for Tekken. Tekken on the cover, Eddy being introduced, Bryan and Law both becoming my mains instantly and remain to be to this day.
I hated that Marshall was gone but loved the new take on Law in general.
That Hworang jab jab low high NEVER worked on me haha reflexes way too sharp and its so easy to see coming. TMM is right though, everyone thought They were invincible with him and Eddy smh oh how satisfying it was to bring people to reality through simply blocking and punishing.
People were button mashers and used Eddy and Hworang to destroy people who didn't know how to block and or were to aggressive themselves. I blew so many minds making these players look like infants. The concept of defense never even entered their minds. Some told me that I was "cheating " for blocking haha good times.
