Paul, I’ve only been watching you a little while. This is the first time I’ve seen you in the woods. I’ve only seen you on some bald, treeless hill, with the wind and/or rain offering some real discomfort. Good to see you in the woods, thanks for sharing…from an old veteran, retired in the US, foothills of the east Tennessee Smokies. P.S. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Woodland camping is such a distinctly different experience from thru-hiking, isn’t it? It makes me want to dig out my old army surplus gear, embrace the inevitable ticks, and head home reeking of campfire smoke. Pure bliss!
As a wild camper I've never really been overly fussed about bushcraft stuff, aaaaaaaaaaaand now I want to buy new gear to go camping in the woods. Cheers Paul
I've been veggy for years but that lamb was almost tempting! No idea how you can put all that food away and I'm twice your size! Loving the recent videos.
I think tarp configuration is magic! My husband and I aren’t brave enough to tarp camp yet. Afraid we’d end up using it as a sleeping bag! LOL! We love this new - old trend of yours. 😊❤
If anyone tarp tents for a week they will soon give up on it. unless they are in the military and have no choice. I suspect it’s mostly for one night or 1/2 a night and then back of the car parked 200m away.
You’ve reminded me of lighting out there. I think that people use too much light. It’s because we’re now using more and more everywhere. I remember when ı was a kid that I was able at night to walk in the forest with no lighting at all. That was with a clear sky, of course. Moonshine was cool!😊 Today you never see dark places. There are lights everywhere…💡
Had one of those Czech bed rolls for a few years but never used it because it’s so heavy. You’re the first TH-camr I’ve watched who’s used one. Always wondered how warm it would be.😁To be honest, I never knew you did this type of camping, I always had you down as a high tech, light weight camper, nice to see you get down to basics, as it were.👍😁🤣
Good to see the bushcraft vids back, makes a refreshing change on your channel, good to mix it up, been a subscriber for a few years now entered comps brought merch am invested, great channel keep up the good work Paul.
A mate of mine, who served in the army, has always called an egg sarnie an egg banjo and I've never asked why, just googled it and it made me chuckle 😂
Fantastic woodland camp there Paul. Loved the moonlight and the atmosphere. Cheeky little set of lights too, nice. A good proper fire, even in the morning. Cheers, Warren :)
Enjoyed that Paul. Good to see you using your woodcraft skills. Glad you had a veggie starter, All that meat is making my mouth water! Happy Christmas to you and Jo and the family. ❤
My pals and I like to camp amongst the trees from time to time. One of my pals has an atago fire pit which means we can get a decent fire going almost anywhere. We bring a big Dutch oven sometimes too. We've cooked up some fabulous munch in some mad places. Despite the fact we also go up mountains and canoe along rivers etc, those fire pit memories are often the best.
Good to see this back to basics camp. I hope to see more like this.....we are all getting too long in the tooth to be out in the extremes! (Speaking for myself! 🤪😂😇
Quality knife. Good to see you wild camping again. Cruising the sidewalks need a break except for a Christmas stroll down the local area of home. Camp is a familiar looking area. Just right temp to camp the way you did. Good deal. All good from east Kentucky USA.
That certainly beats my dinner. I've just had a couple of Wayfarer boil-in-the-bag meals, although the chocolate pudding dessert was rather nice. Funnily enough. I'm watching this from a similar set-up in my local woods. I'm sleeping in a military bivi under a basha tonight; though no bugnet. Gotta love these cold, clear nights. 🥶 Time for a hot drink, me thinks.
Paul, I also watch the log hoppers channel and their content is amazing. It would be great for you to meet up and produce a video showing the minimalistic approach that they adopt compared to all the expensive products that you promote.
Really good to see some bushcraft skills on this channel. Im part of the great unwashed seasoned in bivvying and wild camping....but not bushcraft. I learned a few things here. Cheers!
Lol I think what separates you from the ultra light packers is the 2 course gourmet dinners and the breakfast. At -5, the last thing I want to do is be digging a whole at 3am lol. Now steak and egg breakfast in the am , would be fuel after an hour or so . Happy Holliday's paul !
Cracking camp mate. Its great over at Candy Corner, isn't it. Has anyone showed you how to spark up using birch bark only? Dead easy. Or place a piece of bark underneath before you start shaving the fat wood and you can move your embryonic fire to the pit on the bark platform.
It’s a nice spot just to chill out and have a relaxed camp Andy. I’ve done many different fire lighting methods from birch bark to bow drill. Check out this baby faced bushcrafter 😂 th-cam.com/video/a-XKvKEn2kM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_bpD89F5coK0DxKX
@@PaulMessner Every so often I go down the TPT at the bottom of the estate and help myself to some more as there's loads of birch trees down there. Got a carrier bag full of it in the shed, just in case. I also find the birch logs you can buy at Home Bargains has some grade 1 bark you can take off quite easily. The bark 'paper', being kiln dried, is top notch. I always have a couple of bags of birch in the shed.
Paul always activates my salivary glands with his vids. Hope to make it to the UK some day, although I have been to Northern Ireland so I guess that counts. Nollaig Shona to Paul and his kin from across the pond
Always a bold move when I see someone sleeping with a hot water bottle. I wouldn't risk it in northern Japan. Afraid that a leak or burst would end me in the mountains 🤣
It makes you think about how the simple things our ancestors thought of are just as impressive as most of the things people think of today, if not more impressive, idk
Nice to see you to see you nice Paul back out showing abit of camping 🏕 goods video hope all is well hope to see more of you maybe in the spring and summer doing a bit of camping and maybe with your bike Brompton one stay safe and stay healthy one life enjoy blessed be
Been watching you for years Paul, but lost interest over the last. loved this video though and would love to see more of this style of camping from you
Another good video, Paul. Please could I have some advice. I'm going bike packing. I don't want to take my trangia set. I would like to take a small screw on stove, a small gas canister and I need a pot that's big enough to store it all in and that will allow me to boil some pasta and sauce in side of it. What would you recommend? My trip is in 8 days time. Any help would be much appreciated. Merry Christmas.
Curious why you use the Victorinox for such cooking. I have an Explorer or the Compact as my EDC unless I'm heading into a technical unknown and then carry the Champ. But for camp cooking I carry an Opinel 9, it's a better cutting blade for food. I keep a folding spork and an Opinel 7 in my always-packed cooked kit but if I've got time to think I'll pack a non-folding spork with the Opinel 9 as I find I never need a spoon and a fork at the same time and a non-folding is a better spoon and a better fork. I don't to tarp+mesh sleeping, impressed with your efforts. I use a folding reflective foam mat if going direct onto ground and an inflatable mat over it.
Nice bush camp Paul 👍Oooooh...egg butty for breakfast 😋 Nothing better. Now, is best plain, with tom sauce or with mayo 🤔 Mouth running in North Borneo 😊
Nice one Paul. Your Lamb story sounds like here..... I love it, but good lady not keen. My favourite are Lamb Chops, but they are quite a lot of work for quite a small reward (so I just have to eat more of them 😁)
Hi Paul. When I am getting jaded with the majority of YT channels that simply run out of puff after 12 months, you are a shining star. Keep it up. Love the cooking. BTW I think there is mileage in a really complex backwoods meal. A good fire and dutch oven opens up so many possibilities. OK it isn't "travelling light" but there is a place for it. Foil could be an alternative to a dutch oven as long as there are embers. I look forward to the turkey meal and all the trimmings next year!! Best wishes for 2025
Happy Xmas Paul. A couple of months ago you got a Brompton bike to potentially go Bikepacking with. Do you have any plans for the new year to go Bikepacking?
Making fires reminds me of when I was a lad in South Yorkshire (West Riding then) in the1950s. We’d make winter warmers with a beans or peas can or similar. Punch a few holes in it, get a piece of stiff wire and make a one foot six long handle, light a fire in the can and swing it round to get a good blaze going. We’d pinch a bit of coal to fuel it and get a longer burn. A few of these kept us warm on winter nights whilst gathered on waste ground telling jokes or ghost stories, or talking about the latest cowboy or war film and maybe discussing lasses we fancied. Kids nowadays dunt know they’re born
I am much more interested in seeing you put up a simple tarp Than tents worth hundreds of pounds So much more honest Please post a link to the net/mesh tent
;0Nice to see you in the woods Paul, now don't forget to clean and oil that knife before you put it away. Nice Meat feast video :) Are you going to try a Hot tent camp this Winter? There's a cold draughty wood in Wiltshire that wait to welcome you:))
Sorry to hijack your comment section but I used to watch a TH-camr who did bushcraft etc and he was Welsh! Fell off the face of the earth couldn’t find his channel any where and I swear it was something like dragon outdoors. Anyway a few months ago he came up on a video with a new channel and once again I can’t find him or his channel can anyone help me find his channel? Cheers

I'm enjoying your return to 'Bush craft'.😊
that lamb looked amazing
Re the creepy crawlies…. my lad got bitten by a devils coach horse beetle a few weeks back while camping. Did make him jump. I found it hilarious 🤣

You just got that like because you did not mention any brand! It was just not pure advertising. Thanks!

Nice one! Love the old school, and 10/10 for fire use, although I'm still concerned about encouraging Muppets...
Nice throwback to when i started watching these videos on here and i like the way you used the knife and fire steel, great idea.
Steak ! Lamb , I was expecting bacon in the morning to complete the meat feast ! You have a healthy appetite.

Something a bit difrent sometime u can't beat a good fire and cooking a good meal over it 😋 then chops looks lovly !!
That lamb looks well mate ❤
Great vid Paul, my favourite type of camping
That camp looks perfect.
I love lamb. A farmer across the road from me raises lambs. I buy one from him every year. I had lamb chops for dinner today!
That certainly beats my dinner.

Looks a brilliant piece of equipment for bushcrafting. Thanks

I have to cook my for like that as my wife is a vegan 😂
Nice to see you leaving the Dream.
No, we’ve left it, Paul’s living it for us. Am I right?
How they found out about generating sparks?
They noticed sparks coming out from their Blakeys when they dragged their heels.
