I still remember Mickey & The Newbreed practicing at a little rooming house across from Reid Grocery store in Tuscumbia. Although the recording industry was hush, hush; young artists still got word of what was happening in The Shoals! "East End"

I met Mickey in the early seventies when he was at the Brookhaven Lowery Studios (the old school house) in Atlanta. He was a great guy then -- I see from this video that he still is!

Man Mickey was in the middle of a great scene. Jerry Wexler was right about Mickey's feel and groove..like we used to say "that's one groovy cat" didn't matter who you were are what you played as long as you put your heart mind and soul in it. I'd loved to be a fly in the wall when Duane talked Wilson into doing "hey Jude".

Too bad Mickey wasn't included in the Muscle Shoals documentary about Rick Hall, Fame Studios, Muscle Shoals Sound, and such. (He wasn't available for a scheduled interview and unfortunately wasn't included). He was clearly right in the thick of things and his observations are most interesting.

Neither was Travis, Jimmy Be-Bop Evans; but we all knew who was behind the shadows, including Peanut Montgomery!

Spooner, I really think did the right move going to Memphis, and to this day really dont think he regretts it; but when Rick Hall went from R&B, and top 40 Bubblegum, although sucessfull transition to 2days music @ tht time, had a burning desire 2 move forward.
Although the fortune had left Jackson Highway, they pursued the venture on the River, which unfortuanately never came back. When Muscle Shoals left their roots, it was inevittally going to B the end. And it was. How can you compare Shanedoah to Rod Stewart or The Staple Singers???
