My story of Leonard and salvation mountain. My wife and I visited in the late nineties out of curiosity. There were very few people that day, so we had Leonard pretty much to ourselves. After taking the tour, I asked him were he stayed. He then pointed to an old jeep wagoneer and stated that he couldn't get the rear door to shut. I asked him if I could take a look at it. He said please. I explained that I may be able to fix it as I had been a repairman on the assembly line at the Toledo plant. I asked him to get me a screwdriver and hammer. It seen his striker plate had slipped out of place. I adjusted the plate and the door closed as if it had just rolled of the final inspection line. He thanked me and said " God sent you to me this day" !
When I went there a dude stabbed himself and his guts were falling out and a helicopter came flying around with a spotlight (it was night time) and the dude didn't want to be found and they left. Idk what ever happened to him. I stayed there for 2 weeks

I've been been to Slab city and stayed a few nights. There's definitely laws. It's a little bit more relaxed than the rest of the country if you're in your own little backyard because there's no designated police force specifically for the area, however, the sheriff usually does a drive through at least once a day. And as far as the junkies at night, you're fine if you stay in your own space and keep to yourself. Place isn't as bad as some people (who've never even been there) make it out to be.
It's interesting how places that are considered "weird", lawless, a place for hippies and insane people are perceived to be alienating but are actually more welcoming than the conventional cities people live in. Thanks for this insightful video guys!
they only saw/experienced the touristy side of the slab. there's a lot more to it that isn't as peaches and cream. People are always burning each other out for example. (setting camps on fire). I could go on, but I'll leave it at that...
still a pretty scary place to be, especially if you are a female.. I wouldn't be surprised if the women who choose to stay there are regularly sexually assaulted. Just because you see happiness occur during the daytime and the touristy side of the town, don't forget there's other parts of this town, and I'd hate to see what happens in the evening or in the drug areas. Unfortunately this video didn't interview any of the women and didn't ask anyone about crimes they've witnessed or if they have been a victim of a crime, as I'm sure they'd talk about regular assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rape, etc. With no telephones, police, medical services, etc... if you are raped, injured, assaulted, robbed, or murdered, then you better be OK with that because there's nothing you can do about it because you are on your own. No police or ambulance will come for you. So you better be able to defend yourself and/or willing to kill or be killed.

Yes Theory just usually focuses on positive things, so that's reflected in the video. But you're right it is good to acknowledge both sides. Something tells me Raven didn't mean to erase male sexual assault victims. They do exist and deserve as much sympathy as female victims, but I think people focus on women because it is much more rampant and visible in society due to various reasons. it's an easy mistake to make.

Last year I visited Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Slab city and their library not knowing is was a lawless city. I had an incredible time with my friends and the art was beautiful, beyond anything I have ever seen. I definitely recommend visiting their library btw, to who ever is reading this, you will not regret it!
Edit/Update: While Corn is no longer full time care taker of the Lizard Tree Library it is most certainly still open. Go see Zoe and say hi! Sadly Cornelius Vango is retiring and the library is being boarded up.
I was in eastern Europe after the fall of Communism where the police was so corrupt that they basically didn't exist and everyone knew it. During the fall and for some time afterwords lack of jobs and other opportunities made petty theft, drinking and drugs rampant. People were so poor that drug-houses (more like apartments where fake synthetic drug mixes were sold) used one needle to fix hundreds of drug-users. Yet there were still laws, a least as enforced by the elderly women of the different communities. If kids, say, were caught drinking they'd suffer the wrath of these angry women. I've seen elderly women chase a drunk out of a neighborhood with broomsticks. If a guy was caught stealing, these women would get their sons and more-sober male neighbors or spouses to retain the thief as they marched to the police station to arouse the police into action. In the end, even the police did what they had to do to avoid the relentless wrath of these women when angered. ... Well this is what I've seen

This place is just under a 2 hour drive from my house and my ex-girlfriend grew up there so we'd travel out a couple times a month to visit her old family and friends. The place truly is awesome. On a couple of our drives down there we found traders and we would trade some of our possessions for theirs (they didn't accept money). These trades often included something of emotional value or earth value, definitely a great experience.

I remember visiting this beloved slab city once a year with my dad. I got to meet the man who created the "Love Jesus" hill and have met many of the locals who lived there on and off over the years. I've never met such wonderfully nice and down to Earth people anywhere else. It deeply humbles me to see that other people can get the same sense of satisfaction that I once did years ago and that this place has picked up quite a reputation for its welcoming and kind vibes, despite seeming abandoned.

There is a small town in Tennessee called Iron City. They have tried to establish a police force on two occasions and both times the police car was stolen and flipped upside down in the Shoals Creek. People there take care of themselves and each other and have made it clear that they do not want a police force.

The Salton Sea is an economical time bomb. I recently did my English final on the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea NEEDS more attention. The government is simply ignoring the Sea. We need more money to go to this Sea. We have around 80 million dollars a year going to the Sea. But for complete restoration, several billion dollars is needed. If the sea dries up, the toxic bed of the lake will cause massive dust storms of toxic dust. It would cause way more than several billion dollars in just medical costs of the citizens in imperial valley. The kids in Salton City have to travel a hours just to get to school and the come back home just to get to the nearest grade school. There is thousands of acres of empty land, there only around 3,000 people living in Salton City and just about every single one of those residents want the sea to be restored back to the paradise it once was.
The sea is artificial anyways, it shouldn't be there in the first place.. so it's more natural to just let it return back to the land it was before. let the sea dry up. It's pointless "restoring" the sea as it will be a never ending restoration project that just consumes endless amounts of money and water as any new water pumped to it will also dry up over time. It does more harm for mankind to tinker with and artificially create an ecosystem that wouldn't be there without humans making it possible through artificial means. So while initially the drying of the remainder of the Salton Sea will be an ecological nightmare to the newer ecosystems that currently thrive in the system, and will cause duststorms for a while, etc.. this will only be until things settle down and return back to normal. Plus considering the value of homes within the Imperial Valley surrounding the Salton Sea (many are low income/slum towns with populations of ~1000 or less).. It is definitely much cheaper, to relocate residents directly effected by any toxic conditions than to keep dumping endless billions in a never ending restoration project. It will probably only cost ~250 million or less to relocate residents, which is far cheaper than several billions to restore the lake and countless million of dollars after to keep it maintained. Or another alternative that's cheaper than restoring the sea and cheaper than relocating residents is to just to construct barriers each time the sea shrinks (add new sections of wind barriers each 10 feet the sea shrinks) to prevent the winds from stiring up the dust, giving the exposed ground time to settle.

I've been been to Slab city and stayed a few nights. There's definitely laws. It's a little bit more relaxed than the rest of the country if you're in your own little backyard because there's no designated police force specifically for the area, however, the sheriff usually does a drive through at least once a day. And as far as the junkies at night, you're fine if you stay in your own space and keep to yourself. Place isn't as bad as some people (who've never even been there) make it out to be.

I don't think its so black and white. It's nuanced. There is good and bad everywhere. Yes Theory just usually focuses on positive things, so that's reflected in the video. But you're right it is good to acknowledge both sides.

Last year I visited Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Slab city and their library not knowing is was a lawless city. I had an incredible time with my friends and the art was beautiful, beyond anything I have ever seen. I definitely recommend visiting their library btw, to who ever is reading this, you will not regret it!

I was in eastern Europe after the fall of Communism where the police was so corrupt that they basically didn't exist and everyone knew it. Yet there were still laws, a least as enforced by the elderly women of the different communities. If kids, say, were caught drinking they'd suffer the wrath of these angry women. I've seen elderly women chase a drunk out of a neighborhood with broomsticks. If a guy was caught stealing, these women would get their sons and more-sober male neighbors or spouses to retain the thief as they marched to the police station to arouse the police into action. In the end, even the police did what they had to do to avoid the relentless wrath of these women when angered. ... Well this is what I've seen

This place is just under a 2 hour drive from my house and my ex-girlfriend grew up there so we'd travel out a couple times a month to visit her old family and friends. The place truly is awesome. On a couple of our drives down there we found traders and we would trade some of our possessions for theirs (they didn't accept money). These trades often included something of emotional value or earth value, definitely a great experience.

I remember visiting this beloved slab city once a year with my dad. I got to meet the man who created the "Love Jesus" hill and have met many of the locals who lived there on and off over the years. I've never met such wonderfully nice and down to Earth people anywhere else. It deeply humbles me to see that other people can get the same sense of satisfaction that I once did years ago and that this place has picked up quite a reputation for its welcoming and kind vibes, despite seeming abandoned.

The Salton Sea is an economical time bomb. I recently did my English final on the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea NEEDS more attention. The government is simply ignoring the Sea. We need more money to go to this Sea. We have around 80 million dollars a year going to the Sea. But for complete restoration, several billion dollars is needed. If the sea dries up, the toxic bed of the lake will cause massive dust storms of toxic dust. It would cause way more than several billion dollars in just medical costs of the citizens in imperial valley. The kids in Salton City have to travel a hours just to get to school and the come back home just to get to the nearest grade school. There is thousands of acres of empty land, there only around 3,000 people living in Salton City and just about every single one of those residents want the sea to be restored back to the paradise it once was.

The sea is artificial anyways, it shouldn't be there in the first place.. so it's more natural to just let it return back to the land it was before. let the sea dry up. It's pointless "restoring" the sea as it will be a never ending restoration project that just consumes endless amounts of money and water as any new water pumped to it will also dry up over time.

So while initially the drying of the remainder of the Salton Sea will be an ecological nightmare to the newer ecosystems that currently thrive in the system, and will cause duststorms for a while, etc.. this will only be until things settle down and return back to normal.
Plus considering the value of homes within the Imperial Valley surrounding the Salton Sea (many are low income/slum towns with populations of ~1000 or less).. It is definitely much cheaper, to relocate residents directly effected by any toxic conditions than to keep dumping endless billions in a never ending restoration project. It will probably only cost ~250 million or less to relocate residents, which is far cheaper than several billions to restore the lake and countless million of dollars after to keep it maintained.
Or another alternative that's cheaper than restoring the sea and cheaper than relocating residents is to just to construct barriers each time the sea shrinks (add new sections of wind barriers each 10 feet the sea shrinks) to prevent the winds from stiring up the dust, giving the exposed ground time to settle.

I have watched videos of slab city before, every video I have seen shows that even though there are no laws, the city is unique and the people are welcoming. I think salvation mountain is the coolest part of slab city and one day would like to visit it
Slab city is very interesting. When I first got to Slab city and salvation mountain, I saw an old man you lived in the town talking to tourist about the mountain and the history of the town.
This place is inspirational. It is beautiful how people who have been rejected by society can leave together without laws and police and there is no crime. A friendly and beautiful community. I would love to visit there.

I got a distinct Borderlands impression from the whole area. From the lawless nature of the society, to the weird and seemingly random works of art created by people who were either bored, insane, or just creative. (All of them isn't unlikely...)
