2023 Racial Reporting Convening | Pt. 1: Purpose

Against the backdrop of a surge in racism, xenophobia, and the rise of White Christian nationalism in America, mainstream media has largely fallen short of meeting the demands of this urgent moment. Racist narratives, problematic framing, and formulaic approaches to covering communities of color still persist and are often entrenched in the reporting, perpetuating stereotypes and catering to established power while neglecting community voices and needs. In September, The Emancipator hosted our first Racial Reporting Convening to discuss solutions to mainstream media's persistent insipid and problematic coverage of people of color.
