The Hits for Alex Anthopoulos Far Outweigh Any Misses

  • After a disappointing season by many fan’s standards for the Atlanta Braves in 2024, Alex Anthopoulos’ job as the GM has wrongfully come into question.
While there have been some misses lately, you cannot argue the position AA has put this team in long-term and the great moves he’s made like acquiring the 2024 NL Cy Young winner.

Appreciate you helping us all get our Braves fix until Spring training...of course my happines was lifted this week as UGA beat Texas and (sorry i know ya from AL) but Tenn beat Bama..so short of the Braves playing deep in the postseason, thats the best i can ask for until we start the 2025 season...

Ozuna has been paid $70.6mil since he's been in Atlanta, and has produced $79.1mil in production according to Fangraphs, Morton has been paid $80mil since he's been in Atlanta, and has produced $77.6mil in production. Arcia has been paid $7.9mil since he's been in Atlanta, and has produced $28.5mil in production. Murphy has been paid $13mil since he's been in Atlanta, and has produced $46.1mil in production. Olson has been paid $43mil since he's been in Atlanta, and has produced $72.9mil in production. The name of the game is to get equal or greater value for the money spent, no matter what the player may cost, as little as Arcia, or even as great as Olson.

@@arzdiamondbacks Contreras has seen 281 plate appearances from the DH spot, as he leads the Brewers in DH plate appearances, and that would have never happened in Atlanta with Ozuna at DH. Plus Contreras has played 228 games at the catching position, an average of 114 a year, and with the Braves having d'Arnaud as the 2nd catcher, Contreras would have never had near as many opportunities to catch that many games.

@@MassBoost That's assuming the Braves would continue to give Contreras and d'Arnaud equal playing time, which they would have been stupid to do given their respective 2023 numbers. The team either misevaluated Contreras's defense and made a bad trade, or they would have mis-managed his playing time going forward. One of those two must be true, otherwise the Braves would have a much better catcher right now.

I have to mention this since Richard Rodriguez was mentioned. No one knew he was going to be bad, as MLB implemented the checks for foreign substances on June 21, 2021, and he was one of the offenders. From the start of the season till June 20th, Rodriguez's spin rates on his fastball was 2582 rpm and his slider had a spin rate of 2511 rpm, but from June 21st on, his spin rates on his fastball dropped down to 2323 rpm, while his slider took a massive dive all the way down to 1991 rpm. So he lost 259 rpm on his fastball and lost a whopping 520 rpm on his slider after MLB started checking for foreign substances. Rodriguez's slider spin rate had never been below 2150 rpm back in 2018, and his fastball had never had a spin rate below 2347 rpm before this, which was also back in 2018 also.

Yeah I don't think there are many misses. At least not recently. Kelenic, maybe but I think you would be dumb to write him off already and even if he never pans out you really didn't give up anything worth keeping to get him. Murphy is the most needlessly maligned player I can ever remember in Braves history. Again you gave up a handful of guys who turned out to be busts, a past his prime Manny Piña and Contreras who let's be really really clear was not on course to keep catching in Atlanta. He would have ended up eventually replacing Ozuna. He only improved at all behind the dish because the Brewers historically work miracles on catchers and even then most people who think he's a good defensive catcher have not bothered checking his numbers since the first half of last year. Everyone else on the team is signed undervalue from Cy Young winner Chris Sale to likely future Cy Young winner Spencer Strider to MVP Ronald Acuña to all-star second baseman Ozzie Albies to two of the most powerful bats in the game on the corners of the infield to even Arcia who, while being the weakest link on the team is not a bad 9th best player to have and makes almost nothing. And even in the face of some of the worst injury luck in the last few years he keeps finding gold in dumpsters every time he's asked to. From Rosario and Soler in '21 to Iglesias in '22 to Lopez in '23 and Urshela, Merrifield and Laureano last season. He keeps trading away "all the good prospects" only to pull a Spencer Strider or Vaughn Grissom, or MH2 or Spencer Schwellenbach up seemingly every time he needs to while guys that get traded away seemingly never pan out. There's no way to even kinda understand how MLB roster building works and criticize AA's moves in Atlanta. He's been downright miraculous. Last time he made a bad move was probably Smyley I guess. When he first came to Atlanta he made a few shaky moves on pitchers but since then he's been the best GM in MLB and it's not even remotely close.

    2. 1b Freddie Freeman
    3. Dh Marcell Ozuna
    4. 3b Austin Riley
