Someone is ROBBING these people. If each one of those people are paying $257, someone is getting 10k per floor. That’s crazy.
Those things look to be 6’ x 3’, about 18 square feet. That’s over $14 per square foot per month. Do the math & a small 1000 square foot apartment would be well over $14,000 per month. That’s crazy

Its the way the HK econamy works. Blame the brits for it. HK is a UK experiment on the pure version of Free market econamy. There is 0 tax on everything. This is excelent for bussness but terrible for the gov as there is no way for them to get money and cover the services (fire, police, hospitals, transportation ext). So the 2 major income sources are Land lease and rent from public housing. The HK gov owns all of the land and they lease it out to developers for construction.
The gov is incentivized not to allow development on the 90% of HKs land in order to jack the price and get money.
This creates an absurd land value. I think 2-3 years ago HK's gov broke a record, they leased a plot for 1 skyscraper for 50 years in exchange for 6.5 bilion USD. So think how much the prices in that building are going to be jacked witch such a handycap of startup cost from the land alone.

$12K 60 months ago I bought my place. Damaged by hurricane and run down I was happy to get it because it beats living in a car. I refuse to pay rent. I bought a 30' rv trailer to live in , the city said I get caught sleeping in it I'll have to remove it in 36 hours. So I use that for storage. Saving money to have a small house moved on here. Many of the houses here are falling apart and the city wants to act as if there's character in doing things their way. When were shooting for food in the coming years they will not be working.

What the fuck does our fortune matter for. Just because we're fortunate doesn't change the fact that this is the disgusting reality for thousands upon thousands of people. I cant sit down be thankful for what I have knowing that there's so many hurting people in such devastating conditions. Makes me feel like an absolutely worthless fucking pig. our stories of Fortune don't matter our situations are super rare and theirs are extremely common and thats what hurts. Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time.
Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them).
Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.
(19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad)..

It is very sad how they have to live while working extremely hard for next to nothing and nowhere near what their efforts are worth but you saying that a literal prison is better or that they'd be treated better is a truly insane thing to say!.. If those living this way could escape such a hell they would which should lead people to think about who or what's making it all happen and why it's keeping them in such conditions and the answer is obvious. They/These residents and civilians cannot or dare not speak out or life will become far worse and that is a truth that anyone in the country and even outsiders refuse to stand against. Even me saying that their government/politicians should be ashamed can do nothing to help them VERY REGRETFULLY but I am only one person. So electric bils couldn't be high unless they put like a non energy conserving air cond or something. I don't think desk fans would be too harmful. Am I thinking this right?

Ran by the nicest guy Christian man you would ever wanna meet (never even heard this man say a cuss word or get angry) John Watson. He had rooms some had bathrooms alot didn't so you shared with others. If you were really down on your luck (like I was)and you had $8 in your pocket...you could get a bed in the bunkroom.

I lived in Hong Kong for most of my life. I know people that live in these and for the most part people are okay with it. It is common to have a family of four living in 450 sq.ft so when a single guy or girl reaches late teens and early twenties and sees one of these then it's almost a win-win as the rent is quite cheap (compared to bigger 300 sq.ft small apartments) and they see it as their private space. HK'ers typically work long days and will eat out so these coffins are places to sleep, shower and use the toilet. I don't think that they are fit for humans, it's horrific, but when you've spent all your life living in a tiny bunk bed, with your parents literally on the other side of the room, these suddenly seem like your own space.

Though the price is worth it, you can't guarantee security since there will always be a chance that some random part-time thief would be checking your stuff even if you leave your capsule door open for a few minutes.

Because the rest of the building is a common area, the lock on the outside of your "coffin" is equivalent to the lock on your front door. So you can protect your personal possessions from theft when you leave the building. I'm sure they probably don't leave the lock on the outside when they are inside the coffin space, & maybe even have a separate latch from inside for privacy....

One of the main reasons why Hong Kong only allows development on such a small portion of their land is that since they have very limited sources of income (15% income tax, no sales taxes), they mainly rely on land sales to generate revenue. Thus, it is in the best interest of the HK gov't to keep land prices high, so that when they do sell a small parcel, they can make a lot.

True cyberpunk in the 80s and 90s, inspired by the Kowloon Walled City, was a social commentary on the unseen unfortunates who struggle to live in a high-tech city that seems bedazzling to outsiders. HK is exactly that. Unless you are wealthy, you are not really living, but merely surviving.

      @islamisthetruewaytogod6812 2 ปีที่แล้ว
