  • I love looking at forgotten Golden Age characters. This weirdo is just a guy who insisted on dressing up like an old man to fight crime. Why? I have no idea.

    Hinduism did have a murderous cult who were active for about 450 years named the Thuggees. Thuggee members worshipped Kali and sacrificed victims by strangulation. They would also rob them. The name Thuggee itself gave English the word ‘thug’.

      @ComicTropes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Sarpan You know what? I agree, that was probably what the writer was trying to explain - the Kali worshipping Thuggee cult that was comprised of Muslims, Hindi and other religions. It just wasn’t spelled out well. Good catch.

      I find that if you want to know the inspiration for a comic book story, just look at the movies of the time. In this case, Gunga Din, which features the Thuggee.

    • @kleinjahr
      @kleinjahr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ComicTropes The Thuggee were also known as the Deceivers. Largely because they could infiltrate a caravan or other group that way. Not all that different from the Hashishien, ninja or spec ops.

      There was an issue of Animal Man during Grant Morrison's legendary (and very strange) run where he ends up in a Hades-like limbo of lost comic characters who have been written out of continuity and are waiting to be reinvented, where you encounter characters like the Red Bee and the Gay Blade. It's therefore canon that there _is_ a place where these forgotten Golden Age characters hang out together.
      (Since Grant Morrison wrote himself into the story and had a discussion with Animal Man where he not only broke the fourth wall, he pissed on it and danced on the rubble, Grant Morrison himself technically became canon. They actually killed him off in an issue of Suicide Squad.)

      It was commonly believed by Europeans right up into the 19th century that Muslims worshipped a god called Baphomet. (The Templars were accused of having been corrupted into Baphomet-worship, in fact, and was the excuse used for their destruction.) In the early 20th century it would have been an easy mistake for an ignorant white man in the West to make to connect Baphomet-worship and Hinduism.

    Dress up as Mr. Whiskers as often as needed? Ha! I'll dress up as Mr. Whiskers even MORE often than needed! As often as possible is more like it!
    I'd love to see Alan Moore reboot this character in a Twilight of the Superheroes style revamp. He's now an old man who either dresses as an even OLDER man. Or, he dresses as a young guy, only to surprise people that he's actually a senior citizen. At least until he has an existential crisis, nearing the end of his life. Policy changes have made it so he was kicked out of the agency and lost his pension. He tries to go back into acting with his disguise kit, but his "method acting" gets taken overboard so that no one wants to work with him. He ends up out of work, homeless, and on heroin. Or maybe he's just an old drunk. He's in bad health and has lost his teeth and hair. He's forced to live on as a flesh and blood ironic joke; a bald man nicknamed Mr. Whiskers. Alopecia has even made it so he can't grow a beard or mustache. He now uses his disguise kit (what's left of it) to try and hide the effects of drug and alcohol use for when he panhandles drug money on the street. One day, a group of LDS Chruch type men going door to door see him in an alley, and offer him a bag of food. He accepts. They then give him a pamphlet on their religion. Turns out they aren't Mormon at all. They're from a modernized version of the cult from this story. The same way there were one Inquisitors who tortured people in certain real life religions, there were once a small sect of bad seeds, but the current strain of followers aren't like that at all. Still, in his aging drug addled mind, they're still a threat. He plans on going on in a blaze of glory by bombing their church with a TNT vest. He's stopped by one of his old partners in the FBI. They try to get him to turn his life around. They offer for him to stay with them. And he turns everything around, at first. Until he learns years of drug use have ruined his organs and he's dying. He puts on the Mr. WHISKERS outfit one last time, before walking into the Hudson River. The camera pans out and we never see if he actually drowns or not but are left to assume he did. The end.
    This will be made. It must be made. It is now my life goal. Someone get Alan Moore on the phone. Tell him I have a pitch.

    I hate to bash to a fellow comics TH-camr, but I think by the actor giving up disguise kit to join the FBI, I think they mean he gave it up in private life. Community theater runs in the family. So growing up, we knew a guy who was a cop. When he got promoted to Undercover field officer, he was told to give up the stage just on the off chance a drug dealer or something just happened to see him in a play or something. A few years later, he got promoted to Desk Sargent. He was allowed to return to the stage and he found that because he spent so much time inventing on the details on the fly for his covers he was now a much more skilled improv actor/comic.

    But I do have an idea for you could look at if you do another Frank Miller piece, Dynamites run of Robocop: Last Stand in particular.

    i don't think the actual concept behind the character is bad; there's plenty of old TV shows with the idea of a character who's an amazing makeup artist who can look like anyone or anything. and i'm pretty sure there was even a batman comic where bruce pulled the old man trick so some thugs would think he was an easy target.

    I guess I have the contemporary mindset. When I see something strange or a group doing something odd in another culture my reaction is not to jerk back and be afraid of it. My reaction is look it up or find someone from that part of the world to ask, "What the f*ck are they doing?"

    Was there any telltale tenting of the pants during any of his "adventures "?

    Hey Chris, I started watching your videos a couple of days ago (before watching the new spider-man movie and it reignites my comics love again, sorry not sorry) and I noticed that your videos have kind of a 80s~90s TV shows' vibe, is it intentional? Because I'm loving it.
