WOW, i didn't expect anybody else to know about this game. I played it on the ps2 when i was 15, i really liked it and was a bit sad that nobody else talked about it so it was a BIG surprise when i saw this video. I won't say that Brave was an underrated masterpiece but it defenetly didn't deserve to be forgotten. I hope this video can bring new people to this game. Can't wait to see what you cook up next, keep up the good work!

Hey @ninjabot3606. I'm glad you liked the video and Brave. I've been trying to find anything about this gem since 2019, and to my surprise there was nothing online. I told myself, hey let's do it!
It's true that the game isn't a masterpiece. But It's still not the worst game ever as TripleJump's channel reported. Oh, one thing I didn't mention on the video is that Brave was heavily compared to Tak in the US Official PlayStation Magazine. The writer called it " this isn't Tak 4". Strange, don't you think?

Man, this game holds a special place in my heart. It was one of my childhood games back in the day. I've beaten it 5 times (Feb 2020, Nov 2020, Dec 2020, Feb 2022, Mar 2023, Feb 2024).
I did a playthrough of it on my channel (not to self-promote) and it's probably my favourite and most successful playthrough I've ever done.
I'd really like to see this franchise revived one day, especially at a time when there's a push for more native American representation in media.
Also, the scene where the Wendigo attacks the village scared the shit out of me as a kid 😂

I have never came across someone who finished this game more than two times. Today was the day!
If you ask me, I doubt Brave will ever return. As I said in the video, it needs a community advocating for its return. A subreddit dedicated to Brave will help. People talking about it on Twitter will also help. These actions help big time!
I asked both Robbie Graham and Pete Shea if Brave will ever return and they said probably no. SouthPeak Games still owns the IP, but the problem lies with Disney themselves. If they catch someone using the same name as their Pixar-made Brave, it may end up in lawsuits. Knowing Disney, they may do it.
Maybe a spiritual successor could happen if the game catches the mainstream eye.

This was quite a deep dive! It's a shame that platformers don't have the presence they did on the PS1 and PS2. I personally believe it's the increased cost of development. The Xbox 360 was the first console that had licenses for everything: the disks, the controllers, the wireless connection tech for the controllers, the internet adapters, and so on, including the power cord, and you had to license all of it for your game to come to their system. It made it prohibitively expensive for indie developers. With the increased cost of developing on the Series S/X and PS5, the days of platformers are almost over, unless they say Mario or Sonic.
You brought up some other deep dive topics. Clive Barker's Jericho is always of interest to me. It was an incredibly ambitious game that suffered a devastating tragedy: a fire destroyed pretty much everything they had been working on, and they still had to ship a buggy, sloppy mess with an incomplete ending. Clive Barker had shown he could write a quality game with Undying, but Jericho damaged his reputation. His follow up, Demonik, was so bad and trapped in dead-end development that it was used for the video game the main character was designing in the terrible movie Grandma's Boy. At this point, we'll probably never get another game from Barker. I still have to wonder what could have been...
Big shout out to the developers who helped you with this video. It's great that you're making some connections. This will also help you with your future in investigative journalism, if that's something you intend to pursue.
    Great work, FC! 😃👍

I think that after GTA 3's launch, a massive shift happened in the industry. Big corporations were no longer invested in making a colorful, 3D platformer. The ones who tried to stick to the old traditions were ultimately nuked in the process of this shift. Argonaut Games, Eurocom, Acclaim Entertainment...etc. This why games like Jak and Daxter revamped some of its elements in the sequel. They gave Jak an adult (edgy?) look, guns, super powers, and a.... voice! And despite what many would say, it worked for Naughty Dog. Had they followed the same traditions of the first game, Jak would have died after the second game...
I honestly didn't know about Jericho's incident. Damn :/. I did read however that it was rushed but didn't read too deep into it yet...Thank you for sharing it with me!
As for the developers, I think Pete Shea and Robbie Graham are the only ones who cared to answer everything. Brian Gomez bailed after he saw my Linkedin. Or maybe it was one of my replies to when he told me about the animated series? I replied with " Say What? An animated series? that's some incredible news!". Maybe it's because of that haha.
I hope that I'll be given another chance at uncovering another Vis Entertainment game. Maybe State of Emergency or H.E.D.Z, only time can tell.
I'm glad you liked the video. This was my attempt at uncovering a game nobody delved deep into! I wonder if it will be shared by those interested in the game.

@@freeckycakeOG Always give glowing reviews to the devs that talk to you, and if they want to say something off the record, protect your sources. Game development studios are all about reputation, especially today. The downside of this is that studios are expected to take the blame for the publishers. You'll never hear a game dev on the record blame the publisher, because if they know they'll be blamed, they'll never hire that game dev again. Is it always the publisher's fault? Almost entirely. That's why they force the developers to take the blame. They also often have to sign non-disclosure agreements that can last for decades. Ever since OJ Simpson died recently, all the people that had to sign non-disclosure agreements have been coming forward and revealing some pretty horrible things about him. Non-disclosure agreements end for developers, but they still don't have the guts to trash the people responsible.
I'd love to see this become a career or side project for you. Few people know the lore of how games are really made. Masters Of Doom showed that well. Those guys would program until they couldn't stay awake, sleep under their desk for three hours, then wake back up and program again. They hired a woman to make sure they had unlimited pizza deliveries and Diet Cokes, and they never left the office. The result was all of them becoming millionaires in the 1990s. That's quite a trade off, don't you think?

    • @freeckycakeOG

What you said is true. But I always feel like, some developers don't look at someone small/unknown. Could be because of fear, discrimination or maybe they just feel their voice needs to be heard in a bigger channel/website. I could be wrong as I just started dabbling into this matter. So far, I only contacted 5 developers for 5 games. And that honestly has taken a toll on me, haha. But it was expected :p
"I'd love to see this become a career or side project for you. Few people know the lore of how games are really made."
I'd love to do just that! Luckily, there's tons to cover before I run out of anything, so there's that!
"They hired a woman to make sure they had unlimited pizza deliveries and Diet Cokes, and they never left the office. The result was all of them becoming millionaires in the 1990s. "
That is incredible! I didn't know! Man, the 90s, what a time!
Also not to brag on you, but this Brave video has been on my mind since 2019. I've spent that time searching about anything surrounding the game, but there was none.
      BUT It's here now!
Another game I had on my mind since 2014 is Rygar on the PS2. Unfortunately, there's not much to talk to about concerning that game, but hopefully one day I'll get to talk to Takao Ando or Satoshi Kanematsu about it. Hopefully, in the future!

@@100Servings I still replay both from time to time. Rygar: The Legendary Adventure had this great mixture of action and semi-metroidvania exploration which worked very well back then.

I played this as a kid and i loved it. idk how there are 2 videos online calling it the worst game ever made its far from it. like its not amazing and i can understand why it never got anything after the first game i still think it was a fun time and was one of the more unique ps2 games i played. it is interesting hearing about how they was trying to make a tv series out of it i could imagen that being something i would have watched had it been made.
and i can see the similarities between this and jak and Daxter like the art style is kind of similar and some of the characters do look like they would have fit in with the first jak game. even the story has that hole try not to take it too seriously and you will enjoy it vibe. in all i think this is a hidden gem and im glad that it was part of my childhood and that someone else besides me remembers it.

    • @freeckycakeOG
      @freeckycakeOG  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I know exactly which videos you're talking about. I disagree with both of them. Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer may not be a revolutionary game, but is it fun? Absolutely!
I believe what happened during the launch of the game is that media outlets were expecting it to singlehandedly revolutionize the platforming genre and make it relevant again. I would have agreed if Vis Entertainment made a statement like " Okay, we're revolutionizing the genre.", but they didn't. The aim was to make a fun 3D platformer for kids and families to play together all along.
There exists a prototype build of the sequel of this game, but unfortunately, the person who has it never replied to my emails....It's a shame because we may never be able to see what the sequel could have looked like :/
I hope that one of the developers who worked on this game sees this video, and hopefully share more about what Brave 2 could have been.

one thing that stuck out to me was that multiple of the games you showed, Jim3D and also Brave, don't have proper widescreen support. since you played them in 1080p still and without appropriate fixes, all the gameplay footage is all stretched up

Yeah this is a game I would struggle to get into. Games like Jak, Sly and Ratchet I just don't seem to click with and given that this game is similar to them, I can't see myself getting into it.
I think we can safely say that BAM Entertainment sucks.

    • @freeckycakeOG
      @freeckycakeOG  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well, BAM Entertainment wasn't the best company out there. I'm still critical of their marketing strategies back then. If you remember on my Bujingai video, they didn't market it at all!
But with Brave, they went bankrupt before they even got the chance to publish the game....
The only good game I can think of when remembering BAM! is Reign of Fire. It's a flawed hidden gem, but at least it doesn't suck
