@AveMcree and I understand that aspect of it, aswell. Not saying the choice is easy. The best route ultimately became, what Kanye did. Make your own beats so you can rap on them. We're all from that era where rappers rely on the producer. As you said, putting the "demand" on the producer. I get it. Why limit your own opportunities? That's why Kanye was right. More MCs gotta learn how to produce. For self. Appreciate the dialogue and all you do on your channel.

@14:48 Pete wasn't "working with an artist" in regards to CL, he was "part of a group" and basically "went solo". His argument that CL can get other producers to make beats is minimizing how difficult it is to build up a brand name and fanbase. Imagine if AKAI successfully banned you from ever using any MPC on your channel? AND you had to take down all of your MPC content? and you're not even partnered with AKAI... some aspect of what was discussed and agreed upon between them *before they started making records is unresolved. Or Pete just basically quit his job as "DJ Pete Rock" of the group "Pete Rock + CL Smooth" which means that financially speaking, that group that made those hit records? is dead and doesn't exist anymore. --- *good evening folks! we know you love peanut butter and jelly, but tonight on stage we have just Jelly!* --people ain't showing up to pay for that
Pete Rock was definitely working with other artists (like all the remixes), Deda (full solo project entirely produced by Pete Rock) and the Hip Hop group called INI ( with younger brother Grap Luva, Marco Polo & Rob O and this was also entirely produced by Pete Rock). These two projects were released by BBE Records in 2003 but were created in the early to mid 90s (so basically at the time when PR & CL were still together as a group). CL & PR were together so both should be paid equally when it comes around splitting money especially when CL makes a point about "he had to pay for clearing samples" but didn't get paid afterwards when they became hits because Pete Rock claimed everything. These stories are nothing new and has being going on since the early days of Hip Hop but fun fact is it's mostly about MONEY.
@@hip-hop4life827 I meant "working with an artist" in regards to him and CL. Ave had compared the situation to how "producing for an artist" can be. Only, they were a group, not an "artist and producer" which really does make their relationship different.
I do understand this, but its a bad look for CL imo. There's lots of other artists in that position. CL needs to focus on making his brand worth something without Pete. It is definitely different for producers, but Emcee is the business you chose and people do make it work.
It's old news and They ain't beefing! Pete would just prefer to make new tracks with different artists. He still went on tour with CL to do the old stuff a few years ago even after saying he wouldn't make a new album with him. It started because CL got all posessive and didn't like the fact that Pete was producing for other Artists.

From what i understand on what he told bout the splitup, it seems Pete Rock was comfortably producing and earning money, while CL is a rapper who needs to perform to make money. They did not come to terms.
I saw them on tour around 2013 and knew friends who opened up for them. They told me when Pete and CL showed up to the venue, they were basically like yall need to get out the room. Weren't speaking to each other or made attempts to dap up anyone. On stage they were great. I'm glad I saw them cause I figured a reunion wasn't likely.
From what I saw, old stories / videos, people were saying Pete Rock called the police on CL Smooth while he was overseas and almost got him locked in a foreign jail over whatever. In fact, Funk Flex went on an massive rant about it on the radio. So, whatever Pete got goin’ on towards him, it seems A LOT deeper than just money. Aside from that, CL basically sounds like he was asking him not to give away the sound. But, producers can produce outside without giving away that particular sound. Pharrell and Kanye had a particular sound they give to Pusha T. Nobody else got that style from them. But they everywhere though.

We can only hope they will continue what they did before. Keep it business. Businesswise CL is absolutely correct. He only has one way to generate income in the music industry, whereas Pete has multiple ways, by signing different contracts with different artists. Ps. according to some sources on the internet, both have the same net worth? Around 6 mil.? If so, both are financially secure. Make the new album.
Seems a bit disingenuous to label this a feud. That implies that it's active and ongoing. They've both stated that things are cordial between them, though Pete doesn't seem willing to work with CL again.
I watch that whole drink champ and it goes to show you no matter what times we in some people will do anything to get that check cut especially if it's involved there craft
Check CL. Smooth's Discography since 94' (The Main Ingredient). CL did an album in 2005 and in 2009. He did various features, but not many that moved the needle. What I'm pointing out is that after he and Pete split (label initiated or not) CL had his opportunities to work with many other successful producers in hip-hop. It's not like he was an unknown. He was an extremely respected emcee. But Pete don't owe him anything, unless he borrowed money from him. The sampling shit, he was mentioning??? That beef is with the record label. Especially back in the 90s. everybody was gettin f*cked by the label when it came to recouping money for sample clearance, etc., and to be honest, I doubt Pete owns much of his publishing from that time, because labels weren't giving you much in the way of ownership, and if you were to try to buy it back now, it would be VERY expensive for the sample clearance. So it's not Pete's fault that y'all both got screwed as young artists in a game that was even more predatory back then. CL comes off as a dude who has squandered his talent (and a damn good talent it is), by not working and using his connections at the time. Pete continued to stay in the lab, work on compilation albums, instrumental albums, remixes, and DJing. Now he's got a Grammy nominated album out with Common, and all of a sudden CL comes out the woodwork (aint' dropped a got damn thing in over a decade) and it's PETE's responsibility to do an album with him? ....for the "fans"?! FOH. Pete hit him with the "I wish him nothing but the best"....🤣🤣 When someone responds with that. You know aint a chance in hell that shit is gettin' reconciled.
I don't think the Hip-Hop community is clamoring for a Pete Rock & CL Smooth album. But I digress. CL imo is disgruntled. He seems somewhat jaded because he hasn't attained the level of success in the rap game he feels he deserves.
We have to start looking at these groups as marriages. Unless a partner dies, are we asking the other person about them and why aren't they together and what can make it work?
Just got around to watching this. I was a big fan too. I think CL’s reasoning was kind of lame about Pete being paid to stay at home and make beats for other artists at the same time. That just sounds entitled. There was nothing stopping him from doing guest spots on other artists tracks, or even doing a verse on an R&B record. Which was a popular thing then and could have made him some good money without selling out too much.
Ngl I feel like Pete Rock be tryna make everything personal when shit is business…I mean a lot of people from New York are quick to make shit personal when it’s not…everyone also entitled to their own opinions too…with that being said, Pete been out here doing his own thing creating his own revenue so it’s not like cl smooth ain’t got the clout that Pete does. I mean it’s not like producers are performing like artists they not getting a certain amount for a show every other day or week, he just get royalties…as does CL…so I’m still tryna figure out what he tryna say…it sounds like CL almost dancing around some personal shit that happened n he don’t wanna put that side out on camera, especially when talking about his “brother”. They might not make music together but that don’t mean they don’t care bout each other…
I love Pete Rock but he is very stubborn and set in his ways and is not open minded at all, especially when it comes to Hip Hop being produced by the youth.
NOW THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A SEC......you can literally hear CL on most of them beats after their break-up.....🤔.....I-n-I......Meccalicious.....Baby Pah.....and most of those records didnt really nit the market like that until yrs later. Yah jus don't understand that Pete was droppin meteors in that lil era. Remixes too......
Its time to move on to other producers. F it! Plenty of other producers have that skill it make them beats like he wants. Let the past go and move forward.
Q-Tip produced the first 3 classic albums and most people didn’t know that because the man that Q-Tip is he put produced by A Tribe Called Quest! He put J.dilla on( could’ve seen him as a competitor, instead he helped him out by introducing him to everyone in the industry)I’m saying this to say some Niggas like Pete Rock ain’t build like that! He sued Nas! I love Pete Rock as a producer though, you can’t deny his talent.
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth are both from Mount Vernon. My step brother went to school with Pete Rock, Heavy D, Trouble T-Roy (R.I.P. 🕊️), & Diddy back in the day. All due respect, you gotta get your facts straight before you get up on TH-cam & start doing these videos fam. Real Rap. 🤷🏾♂️
I love to my husband hopefully the brothers could get back together soon just for the sake of the culture but I guess he got Peter gunz now so maybe that will inspire something 💍🥳
Me and CL share a birthday. Both October 8th libras. I already know Pete Rock is wrong. Like alot of producers to be real with it. A producer I worked with in high school "forgot" about the ones he came up with soon as he could work with bigger artists. And that definitely pissed me off. I don't fw him to those day, 30 years later. Cause that was some punk shit. So ironic how much I relate to what CL talking.
Growing pains of hip-hop... How beholden is a producer to their rapper? There was no real precedent at the time. BUT... at the time, couldn't CL Smooth get shows WITHOUT Pete Rock standing at the turntable behind him? Because, THAT'S how you get your sample money back, CL. Rakim was fine without Eric B. Fresh Prince was fine without Jazzy Jeff. etc. etc. At a certain point, if the rapper can't find success without a +particular+ producer, then no one was checking for that rapper and he, in fact, owes his success to that producer. (There's a reason DJs/producers got top-billing in those duo names.) Pete is working with Common.. who brings real value to the duo. If I'm Pete Rock.. doing an album with CL (now) means that I'm 75% of the draw and I have to share (at least) 50% of the profits. That doesn't make sense. CL needs to do an project with a 'lesser' producer (Black Milk etc.) and show he has value before he knocks on Pete's door, again.
CL is bitter, miserable, and constantly complaining about the past. Move on Bro. It's been almost 20 years since they broke up. He needs to make new music. Pete Rock has moved on and is thriving in his career after going broke and being left for dead by CL.

Ps. according to some sources on the internet, both have the same net worth? Around 6 mil.? If so, both are financially secure. Make the new album.
Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Guru & Primo.
Both grown men that kept it to themselves.
Seems a bit disingenuous to label this a feud. That implies that it's active and ongoing. They've both stated that things are cordial between them, though Pete doesn't seem willing to work with CL again.
CL Smooth called Pete the F word... I'd say it's a bit worse than a feud or are you cool with cats calling you out ya name?
You're wrong.
They’ve been beefing for decades. That’s why there has been no PR & CL music since the 90’s
CL SMOOTH AND PETE ROCK WERE LIKE PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY. I REMINISCE IS ONE OF HIP HOP’S CLASSICS 🤷🏾♂️
We have to start looking at these groups as marriages. Unless a partner dies, are we asking the other person about them and why aren't they together and what can make it work?
Mt Vernon!
WOW 😮
They're from Mount Vernon.
Which was a popular thing then and could have made him some good money without selling out too much.
whats that on nore head.....
Straighten it out was crazy from nore
They need to box it out my money on CL
Pete is money earnin' Mt. Vernon. CLs from New Rochelle, NY - the northern region.
They might not make music together but that don’t mean they don’t care bout each other…
Yo wind longer than Nore 🤫
When music content creators resort to gossip 🧐
Na,, AVE,,NOT THE BRONX BRUH,,MT.VERNON IS THE PLACE,, THAT THEY FROM..GET IT RIGHT NOW💪🏿💪🏿
he's from MT Vernon
💪🏿🎯💯
If Heavy D was alive...🤔🤔
Been going on for years and I won't pick a side but 3rd Base just reunited for a tour etc.
Thumbs up gang we here 👍
Pete Rock isn't from Harlem. Mount Vernon isn't Harlem. Manhattan isn't Westchester.
I love Pete Rock but he is very stubborn and set in his ways and is not open minded at all, especially when it comes to Hip Hop being produced by the youth.
You know this How?
@ from reading and listening to his comments 🤷🏾♂️
NOW THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A SEC......you can literally hear CL on most of them beats after their break-up.....🤔.....I-n-I......Meccalicious.....Baby Pah.....and most of those records didnt really nit the market like that until yrs later. Yah jus don't understand that Pete was droppin meteors in that lil era. Remixes too......
Its time to move on to other producers. F it! Plenty of other producers have that skill it make them beats like he wants. Let the past go and move forward.
Pete rock ain’t from Harlem. Man do your research
I love Pete Rock as a producer though, you can’t deny his talent.
cl smooth is doper then pete rock sorry just my opinion but rapping of course i am saying. cl is fire for real as an mc
They are not from Harlem They are from Mt. Vernon
Pete rock from Mount vernon I'm from south 9th
Sad to see
Reminisce is one of the best hip-hop tunes of all time. definitely legendary
That Funk Flex show, where he went off on Pete Rock was cringy. I rock with both and it wasn't easy listening to it. It got ugly.
WTF beef brings clout so I guess alot of people need to comeback relevant to get to the 💰
wtf is happening?
Me and CL share a birthday. Both October 8th libras. I already know Pete Rock is wrong. Like alot of producers to be real with it. A producer I worked with in high school "forgot" about the ones he came up with soon as he could work with bigger artists. And that definitely pissed me off. I don't fw him to those day, 30 years later. Cause that was some punk shit. So ironic how much I relate to what CL talking.

Is Tyler The Creator CL's son?
Ave you’re kinda late on this.
(There's a reason DJs/producers got top-billing in those duo names.)
Pete is working with Common.. who brings real value to the duo.
Fresh Prince got into acting. That's why he was fine without jazzy. Rakim never did much without Eric B.
@@topnetworkersgroup Rakim has as many solo albums as there are 'Eric B and Rakim' albums (4).
Rakim produced many of their songs, so he did not need eric b, who was mainly a dj
None of these comments are correct..Yall outsiders looking in...its more t9 the story
🤷🏾
@AveMcree because I know both of them personally and worked with both of them. I am seeing alot of comments that are not true.
@@knos360 it was weird it popped up in my algo when I was researching something else
U way out of touch if u just learning that they have issues.
Old news
CL is bitter, miserable, and constantly complaining about the past. Move on Bro. It's been almost 20 years since they broke up. He needs to make new music. Pete Rock has moved on and is thriving in his career after going broke and being left for dead by CL.
