    Hey Chris I switched to a pneumatic disconnect and still have the old electronic one that was working when I removed it so if you want it, it's yours. Love your videos and thanks for sharing your travels with us, my Saturday morning coffee would not be the same without you.

      Check both brands for how well sealed they are for water fording. There is a vent hole on the cylinder; can water get inside and damage it? I designed my own version and the cylinder I sourced had a two connections, one for the supply pressure, and one to run a vent hose up high. I sealed the plate to the gear housing with silicon. Pneumatic is the way to go, you can disconnect the swaybar any time you want.

    Chris, when I took my Rubicon to Uganda for a two year safari, I too had issues with the Electronic Sway Bar Disconnect. The first problem was a rusty gear inside, and I simply cleaned it up and degreased it. That worked for a year. Then I had the whole actuator fail, and like you the replacement price was not something I was going to do. I found several junk yards online that sold them though. The one I went with was a Canadian junk yard dealer that offered one for $125. I replaced it in 2019 and it's still working well. Consider going that route.

    When you finish in Missoula head south into the Bitterroot valley. Take Skalkaho Pass over to P-burg and Georgetown lake. Its a dirt road most of the way and it has amazing views. You wont regret it. Twin lakes out of Hamilton is an amazing 20 mile drive up as well. Good luck. And if you want a great tour, stop by the Missoula Smokejumper Base and ask for Boyd. He's a foreman there and I'm sure he would give you a tour of the base. Good luck and keep up the good work.

    Just a general comment from a long-term viewer, and please don't take it as criticism. There are only two personal characteristics that I see all the time from you that make me sigh. Number 1, your diet. What you cook for yourself is not in question, but you have traveled the length and breadth of the US and Canada, where some of the most phenomenal local cuisine is available to you, and yet what do you usually choose? Pizza, hamburgers or gasp, a chain fast food joint. Could you not make exploring food part of your adventure? Number 2, and very personal to me, you explore some of the finest recreational fishing hot spots, yet you never cast a line. I'm so envious, so that REALLY hurts. ;) Love your continuing saga buddy. Keep it up! Come back to Nova Scotia some time. I owe you a lobster or two!

    My 2012 Jeep Rubicon electronic sway bar disconnect failed fairly early on in my Wrangler. I ended up buying another one used online. That one lasted another year, and failed as well. I was dead set on buying the air actuated type to replace it, because I wanted the in cab automatic operation- but while saving up for that, I bought the EVO No Limits knob. I quit thinking about the pneumatic units after that. The knob is just so easy and reliable, and I’m really happy with it. Using it is so easy and fast. I just give it a couple turns while I’m airing down, and when I’m airing back up, and I never think about it all day. I highly recommend the No Limits knob. 👍
    Good luck.

    Hi Chris. Didn't want to go through 233 comments. But if you have a multimeter or test light. Check to make sure you have power in the wire that actuated the sway bar actuator. Check at the harness plug. Just to eliminate the harness. Sometimes a wire before plug and after at the plug connector points. You have a good fuse. Now go down the line. Good luck Quinn

    You may have already read all of this, but a little web search led me to a page called "carcomplaints" and it talks about a lawsuit against FCA for defective electronic sway bar disconnects on JK Rubicons and RAM trucks. While not be able to disconnect off road is an issue, the danger is in driving these vehicles on road without being able to re-engage the sway bar. Another page by a company called "JKSMFG" led me to a page for a manual disconnect cable ($252.00) that basically gets rid of the electronic portion of the disconnect and runs a cable inside the Jeep giving you manual control. I hope that helps some. Another great video.

    Chris, been watching for quiet awhile so know about the sway bar problems you have had. I would go with the manual disconnect option. One time cost, last forever and easily done by you. I’ve got one rule for disconnecting the front sway bar, if I have to air-down, it’s time to disconnect the sway bar. I know it’s a bit of a pain to do a manual disconnect, but it is fool proof, and definitely much better on you wallet. Great videos, really enjoy your channel. Stay safe and enjoy life.

    My thought on the disconnect is possible corrosion on the connectors. Electronics open to water/moisture/dirt/mud/plants/etc. on a vehicle, especially on the setup you have, is susceptible to that. Physically clean both the male/female parts of the connection, inspect for physical damage, clean again with some anti-corrosion/rust inhibitor, and dry. Then hook everything back up and see if that helped your problem. ALWAYS do your best to keep covers in place. They are not just there for cosmetics.

    Hmm, Lewis and Clark caverns isn't too far away to your west, and ringing rocks off the Pipestone exit near homestake pass is a nifty short side stop. Watch out for the open mines in the area. Bring a hammer, play a tune. The Berkeley Pit is worth a stop if you make it over the pass to Butte, just to see how crazy we go for metals of any type. I'm guessing you'll head to Yellowstone. You can't really go wrong with any route if you're just enjoying the drive, but I have to recommend the NE entrance and the Beartooth highway ... though by this point you're likely already in the park and halfway gone ;).

    Chris are you aware there is a class action lawsuit over the disconnect? It's been repeatedly failing on all the Jeep and RAM vehicles that use it. People have had it get stuck in the disconnected position making their Wranglers and RAM trucks prone to some very severe body lean at highway speeds. Not a safe condition. When I read about the suit I thought it might be a few hundred dollar part. $2100! Jeep/RAM has been making a killing for years replacing a poorly designed, prone to failure part.

    There is a lot more diagnostics you could do on that actuator. Need to rule out a wiring problem. A cheap test meter should help do that. A wiring diagram would be invaluable. I know a guy in NY that is king of diagnostics if you get back there before getting it fixed. He lives in a small town and has a TH-cam channel called South Main Auto. Or something like that.
    Something is rattling around on the Jeep. I can hear it quite easily.
    Some awesome views there.

    • @corydriver7634
      @corydriver7634 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      4x4Scout my thoughts exactly, having a multi meter and a little TH-cam instruction on how to use it would be helpful plus it’s not like he can’t use it in other situations. His diagnosis didn’t prove the actuator is the problem, could easily be a bad connection, wire or switch.

      I want to add one more thing for troubleshooting a part like that. Once you have finished checking the wiring and switch with a multimeter and wiring diagram, and you are fairly certain it is the actuator, crack that thing open. See what is inside. What is the worst that will happen? You confirmed it isn't working. Check it out. In my experience, 80% of the time you either see something obviously broken (gear, or whatever) something obviously burnt (capacitor, trace, connector) or it is just grimey inside and you clean it and put it back together and all of a sudden it works again. Don't forget, it is in the manufacturers best interest to make the part as simple as possible. The simpler and cheaper the actuator, the more profit they make at the same vehicle price. So it is unlikely the inside of that thing is a labyrinth of processors and actuators. It is likely a simple motor with plastic gears, and a plastic gear stripped. Or something like that. Best of luck!

  • @absmith001
    @absmith001 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just took my sway bar disconnect apart today and got it working. My actuator/motor would also not respond. I took out the whole sway bar assembly to disassemble. Once I cleaned out the rusty, gunky gearbox, re-greased, and reinstalled everything started working again. Maybe give that a try.

    • @Dwealdric

      It's probably a bit of everything. The stock tie rod and drag link are horrible for rattles and are not greasable. Over time they simply fail to properly dampen the rotational movement of the bar, and make a bunch of noise. They still work fine, they're just loud and not worth the money to replace.

    Did the actuator need to be bolted to the truck for a ground?

    Nice episode, Chris. You seem more relaxed than in the last couple of episodes. Too bad about the sway bar actuator -- $2,100 is just plain obscene! Hope you are able to utilize an air compressor-actuated sway bar disconnect like the one your friend uses. Don't know what the maintenance intervals are or what the expected life should be for one of those, but if it's significantly less expensive than your factory unit it, then why not buy 2 and keep one as a spare? :-) Wondering whether there might also be a simple mechanical solution that you could just reach underneath the front of your Jeep and throw a lever or something like that (i.e., without having to wrench on it every time )?

    As far as the sway bar goes, look into the Currie antirock. After watching one of dirt lifestyle Nates latest videos he explains the benefits really well. After understanding the system I am seriously considering it.

    Hey Chris you might want to go with a ROCKJOCK ANTIROCK FRONT SWAY BAR KIT, about $450 at most distributors. Couple guys in our jeep club have them and have said they work great, enjoyed the video, safe jeeping.

    You can disassemble the sway bar disconnect easily enough. It's typically a sealing issue. Also, Jeep doesn't use marine grade grease when they pack the gear box. Open it up, clean it out, pack it with Marine grade grease and re-seal it with better sealant. Shouldn't give you anymore issues. You could also just get a Anti-Rock set up, and never have to worry about ANY kind of actuators. It's not amazing on the street, but its far cheaper than a replacement actuator. No real maintenance other than greasing the zerks... You'd never be at the mercy of failed o-rings, broken air lines, or a failed compressor.

    Dying to get on the road, but have been watching COVID hotspot maps, trying to be smart about destinations, etc for an early fall ride. Would love to blast out of the east coast for the west for a bit. Hard gauging from Chris how it might be impacting his trips. Appreciate any input from the CO,NM,AZ,WY area.

    With actuator connected jiggle the wiring (easy) to see if it will run intermittently, in case you have a broken wire.

    Odd question but when it pours rain, do you just stay in town and chill and get work done or....? It would be interesting to see a video of you setting up and cooking etc. when it's raining. It was awesome seeing how you sleep...with the floor boards fitting in. I had kind of wondered how they worked. Semi new to your channel. Good stuff so far.

    I noticed that you no longer use the Skottle for cooking any more had it just become to bulky to carry or was it no longer performing the task needed? Just curious for a longer term review. Great Channel!
