Great job! I'd suggest a momentary contact switch like a doorbell button. It only heats up if you have the button depressed. As soon as you let go, it's off. Less likely to put it down with the power on. Less chance for accidental burns.

I can see a potential to leave one pole of the cutting wire off the pencil loop. Instead, connect it to a small alligator clip. Then you can punch a hole in the center of the waste area to push the wire throughout, then clip it to the pole... that way you can make custom cuts in the foam. As in silhouette the shape of tools for your tool drawers.

Fun, brings back memories from decades ago, when I was about 10, with a similar toy. We did not have Super batteries from GP back then. I used a model train transformer, adjustable 0 to 12 V, 1 A, DC. If your wire was too thin, or you cranked up the dial too high, the wire would turn red, and melt. It was fun to cut styrofoam, but otherwise pretty useless.

In stores that sell rope, they use a mounted device (on the sales rack) that has a solid metal blade (0.25 x 1.5 x 0.062”) powered by wall outlet. Blade sits on two 0.25” rods out about 2” from base of device. Rope is pressed into blade and melts and seals both ends of cut. Switched, of course.
Shortcut: soldering gun. Such blades are available or can be formed from copper wire.
