We can see this in almost anything, commonly sports, if you overstay instead of retiring for a few extra millions in the long run it can hurt your brand, as you brand diminishes because people are remembering you when you're a shell of yourself compared to when you were in your prime the business opportunities become limited after retirement opposed to leaving while on top people are still attached to that brand and remember you in a better light meaning more business opportunity. Roy Jones Jr being an example. The reason why Jay-Z is still seen as this iconic figure above his peers and not watered down is because he doesn't just attach himself to anything, he picks wisely and understand brand value and isn't just everywhere if that makes sense.

At the time he was banging way more views so he got lucky that it didn't have as much traction but even now he isn't hitting as many views like he used to but I don't think it was due to that song but it definitely could've watered down what he was doing.
