WTF You Need To Know: The Karate Kid Franchise

  • The Karate Kid has to be one of the most unexpectedly massive franchises of all time. In 1984, John G. Avildsen’s The Karate Kid was a modestly budgeted underdog story (in the Rocky mode) featuring two unknown leads, Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. At the time, Macchio was mainly known for playing the doomed Johnny in The Outsiders, while Morita was known as the wacky Arnold from Happy Days. The $8 million movie would gross $100 million in 1984, and the sequel, The Karate Kid - Part II - would make even more, grossing $115 million and giving us the Peter Cetera classic (to some) “The Glory of Love.”
The franchise would die, for a while, when The Karate Kid - Part III flopped with a measly $38 million gross, while The Next Karate Kid would fare even worse. For the longest time, it looked like the franchise was dead, especially when Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan starred in a well-received reboot. It seemed like people had forgotten Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi until William Zabka, who played the first movie’s antagonist, Johnny Lawrence, started pursuing the idea of a sequel. It began with a music video Zabka directed called “Sweep the Leg,” and it led to the series Cobra Kai, which kickstarted the idea of the Miyagi-verse, and stands as perhaps the best example of a “requel” (reboot/sequel) that we’ve ever gotten.
In this episode of WTF You Need to Know About This Franchise, we examine the saga as a whole, digging into the characters, the production history and the story of the franchise, including our take on what Karate Kid movies are essential and which ones (if any) you can skip.
This episode is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes, and produced by Tyler Nichols. What’s your favorite instalment of the Karate Kid series? Let us know in the comments!

I like how Johnny is playing a positive role in this one. Teaching Karate is always a positive thing for kids, it teaches them discipline, wisdom, and self esteem, and worth. Karate Kid 2 is an underrated sequel, and I like how it did something different than repeat the original. The orginals are fine the way they are and Cobra Kai, while not the best with all the swearing and stuff, it still continues the life of Daniel and Johnny's as they mature and go from enemies to friends and show that neither of them can be forced injure or possibly kill to acheive personal gain.

Karate Kid 3 is kind of essential viewing. Though it’s not a great movie it does introduce Terry Silver and Mike Barnes. Cobra Kai was surprisingly good. Paying homage to the old series, but still introducing new stories and characters and is its own thing. Not that keen on a kid mentoring an old guy. You can relate to an old guy wanting to pass his teaching to a younger relation (father-son), but it will be way more challenging to do it the other way. You can say it would be a fresh new spin, but sometimes it might be best to stick to a true and tried formula 🤔

The 2010 reboot doesn't count as part of this universe imo. It just used the name for the brand recognition, but isn't even about Karate. It's about Kung-fu.
To say they're part of the same franchise is like saying The Rocky Horror Picture Show is part of the Rocky franchise. Nothing against the film itself, which is half decent, but it's NOT "The Karate Kid".
It's not even the same martial art, never mind cinematic universe and has no place in the continuity of the Miyagi-verse.
If you're going to watch Cobra Kai, then KK3 is essential viewing. And as Miyagi is in it, I'd also add The Next Karate Kid too, as that's far more likely to come into play in a future Cobra Kai season, than anything out of the 2010 reboot.

Cheng did not feel like Johnny, he felt more like Chozen because he didn't have any issues killing Dre

I only disagree with KK3 being skippable. I guess it is if you don't watch Cobra Kai, but I found it entertaining due to Terry Silver. While it's a worse film than part 2, I find it more rewatchable. Plus, come on, you gotta finish the trilogy. I also think the reboot had more potential if they had had an older actor for the story they were going for. I think the nepotism turned people off.. I found out about Cobra Kai the day it dropped and binged the show in a day. I hope Barnes is in S6 more than he was in S5. I wonder if the limited screen time was to give Chozen a season to shine. and shine he did.

    15:44 - It's not terrible.. It's just ... NOT KARATE!!
How can it be The Karate Kid if he learns Kung Fu ?😡

I agree. Jackie Chan was the best part. Everything else did not have the heart of the franchise.

I actually liked the cartoon. But in the 80s alot of cartoons didn't last as long ass ppl remember. One season was pretty average back then.

William Zabka, Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith (Larence, Kreese and Silver) are the best actors in this show, where most of the cast's acting leaves much to be desired.
Funny enough, the fight scenes are generally terribly performed, choreographed and outdated for a Karate centered show.
Although the first two seasons were the strongest and despite the previous statements; it's a pretty addictive, nicely written and engaging series that I respect allot.

The Karate Kid 2010 is flawed mainly because of the ages of the students, IMHO (and it's not Karate, but Kung-Fu, two totally different types of martial arts).

Required viewing should be The Karate Kid 1,2 and 3.. Then you're ready for Cobra Kia.
The Next Karate Kid , The Karate Kid (2010) and the cartoon don't have any business with the franchise...
