  • Rockstar cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker has been arguing for years that there is no better time to be born than the present time. But does his statistics-based optimistic message hold true in light of the impactful and unexpected Covid-19 crisis?
Award-winning Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker is known as one of the world’s most influential and optimistic public intellectuals. In recent years, his books The Better Angels of Our Nature (2011) and Enlightenment Now (2018) demonstrate, based on a wealth of statistics, that throughout history our societies have become significantly less violent and poor.
However, Pinker is a controversial figure. His critics warn that his theories paint a dangerously rosy picture of our world, lack attention for personal human suffering, and can be rebuked easily with ample counter evidence.
During this evening, Steven Pinker will join us live via Zoom make sense of our present corona-ridden world. We will discuss with him how to explain our response to Covid-19 from a psychological perspective, how the crisis lays bare our human limitations and to what extent Covid-19 will really prove to be a turning point for our societies.
In our series De Balie Icons, we warmly welcome renowned international thinkers to discuss global topical issues. A wide range of modern icons from all walks of life and fields of expertise take the stage in Amsterdam to share their valuable insights. Previously De Balie Icons featured these thought leaders: Kishore Mahbubani De (Singapore), Zineb El Rhazoui (France), Taiye Selasi (UK/US/Ghana/Nigeria), Mark Lilla (US) and Francis Fukuyama (US) and Mariana Mazzucato (Italy, UK).

Great interview. I'm finishing Pinker's book "Enlightenment Now" and I was wandering what his thoughts would be around Covid Pandemic. This program was great help. Very good moderator and questions from the audience. Many thanks from Chile. It would be nice to have a follow up interview seven months after. Just saying. Cheers.

My only criticism is that his view on energy is make more better energy. The contemporary view of psychology is that we’re better off building better cities. People don’t choose to drive, they live in driving places rather than walkable places. Old cities are walkable because there were no other options.

Thank you. I shall subscribe immediately. One more thing to add to the stuff from Netherlands I love (late Rembrandt self portraits, archery and football excellence, humanistic tolerance, windmills, the uniquely undramatic conquest of Great Britain ...).

Social distancing means I don't expect and visitors and it's okay that I have spent less time cleaning my home.

It somehow falls short of intellectual meandering where reality should be the primer

If you saw Thelma and Louise, the journey to the canyon was traumatic, but, by the look of it, their last ride was a joyride, all the way to the bottom.

No, the second of their decision to jump was the joyride of proving their personal freedom. But again, WHAT was the point of stating this under this videocast? Honestly, I have no idea. Am I missing something?

@@bobhumid i guess Ian is implying that we can say progress has been a joyride, but it will not for that discontinue the catastrophic demise. i see that spirited comment as one that could've been made by a concerned person - and steven himself says, we have some reasons to be concerned...

@@ilhamann Nobody is stating anything like "no to be concerned". But Steven did not say that we are doomed - Or did I miss anything here?
Isnt it that this impetus of systematically negating Mr. Pinker for digging out existing and proven data of our progress - which is his effort to establish a more objective view on what we (as a lifeform on earth) have gained in terms of real civilatorian success, is absolutely not helping to say at least, if not a notable a suicidal vibe pushing us more to the abyss? The world ends every day for many people. The world has ended a bazillion times for billions of beings in a second-based rhythmically pattern...
We live in an enthropic universe. Please do look up the second thermo-dynamic rule. We are doing quite well regarding the circumstances of just plain existing physics that are our nature! ... Without falling into the trap of arrogance, we did one hell of a job to come to the point where we are now - and with some effort we might survive another breakdown, or two or three or 4000 civilisations to come or not.
Personally, I am tremendously happy, glad and thankful to live in THIS century and not the ones before. Period.

Couldn't watch all of this. What are solutions for all the workers who mined coal? What are solutions for all the people whose jobs are not coming back? Minimum income? Or do we simply turn our heads - I am really curious about this part of the puzzle of progress. Thanks.
