I remember my great Aunt and Grandmother having a few of these hassocks they made from coffee cans and the larger juice cans, using heavy upholstery fabric leftovers to cover them. They always filled the cans with sand so they were sturdy enough that adults could use them as a step stool and a foot rest, although I'm not sure the sand filling was neccessary. The sand filled hassocks were definitely not as easy to move around; but one or two handles were sewn into the top or a side seam to help drag them around. I spent a lot of time sitting on those can hassocks as a little girl. Thank You for bringing back some warm fuzzy memories, and sharing some great instructions so I can make one or two of these, and let my Grandkids try and figure out what they're made of while they have something their size to sit on. 💕
My mother-in-law made one of these and I received it after her death. It is ingenious! She made hers by double stacking the cans, which made it taller, of course. Please do more of these crafts. Too much of our heritage of “making do” has been lost.

I remember these!!!! My grandma had one and we did too! My grandma was an amazing seamstress too. She slipcovered everything from scraps and old clothes. Growing up during the depression they didn't waste a single thing. I figured it would be pretty cut and dry to make. Just never put the effort into locking in the steps. Thanks for sharing! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mary! My Grandmother, and several ladies in our Church, used to make these hassocks. We received one as a wedding gift and had it for years until it fell apart. It was covered in maroon horse hair fabric (probably from an old sofa) with a leather bottom, rather than wood, and trimmed in gold rickrack. Thank you for the memories. 💝

Love this! For beginners - I think those smaller popcorn tins would work well too. They wouldn't be flower shaped - but would have a more even border. Really cute with the pompoms!!

I want to try this! Your's turned out beautiful! The pom pom trim added just the right touch fun and whimsy! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mary! My Grandmother, and several ladies in our Church, used to make these hassocks. We received one as a wedding gift and had it for years until it fell apart. It was covered in maroon horse hair fabric (probably from an old sofa) with a leather bottom, rather than wood, and trimmed in gold rickrack. Thank you for the memories. 💝

My Grandma Parker made one of these for me when I was 3 or 4. She made collected juice cans from everyone and made one for all the kids she babysat. Wonderful lady and wonderful memories! Thank you for bringing those memories back!!
