- I am breaking my no Marvel movie rule to talk about how not good of a movie Morbius was. They truly don't seem to know what they were going for, an antihero story, a horror movie, a vampire movie? Who knows! What I know is it turned into the chewed-up pile of junk that ended up being Morbius.

Why do they keep casting Jared Leto in superhero movies? Every one he’s been in or starred in, he’s been terrible in. Another example of how studios don’t listen to their audience

Morbius really doesn't strike me as a character who needs a destinct villain because the whole vampire drinking blood aspect is a perfectly good central conflict.
Yeah, why does he need to punch another, more evil vampire when his greatest enemy is theoretically himself?
Mike craving normalcy and stability but wrestling with this part of himself that destroys everything he builds and is a danger to everyone around him is a perfectly good problem to put at the center of the story.
@@Otter34 Yeah, I actually thought it might be cool to have a character that believes they are a good person but over the course of the movie slowly realises they are the bad guy. Not ending in redemption or anything, or being aware that they are doing bad things and stopping. It might be interesting to have a villain simply become a villain, and sort of be okay with it. The really evil, yet charming, villains who revel in being bad are usually the best. Probably would need someone other than Leto though.
I have a feeling Morbius ultimately being the protag of his own movie was done simply to appease Letos ego. Just my surface level opinion :p
"The protag but evil" is such an eye-roller at this point that it's just kinda embarrassing that Sony insists on still doing it.
@@Taurusus It works in MCU so they figured they cash in on it, but the issue is that MCU has a good story to go along with it, unlike Morbius here
The best acting Jared Leto ever did was get his face bashed in by Edward Norton in Fight Club. Its the most cathartic scene to see anytime you're forced to watch something starring Jared Leto.
Umm... I think his BEST ROLE is getting Chopped Up by Christian Bale while Huey Lewis and The News plays in the Back.

My consensus on his acting is that if you have to use method acting for every role then you're probably not a good actor
The main reason morbius is a “living vampire” is the comics code still had a no monsters rule so it was a loophole to say he was just a vampire themed villain. He is a character born of censorship for age ratings and it will forever haunt the character.
Interesting. I had no idea that comics weren't allowed to depict monsters at one point. Was it because they felt it was too scary or what?
TL;DR they used the excuse that "kids seeing bad things would make them delinquents" to ban anything in media they didn't agree with.
There used to be an organisation called The Comics Code Authority that had a seal of approval publishers would need a seal from to be able to get a comic stocked in most establishments.
It was born from a bigoted fearmongering report called "Seduction of the Innocent" blaming comics for most of the societies perceived problems* especially child delinqicy, it was partially based off the film equivalent the Hays Code.
There was a lot to it but to quote the Wikipedia "Vampires, werewolves, ghouls and zombies (the staple monsters of the horror comics) were banned outright, and, in addition, comics could not use the words horror or terror in their titles."
A lot of it was the stuff you now hear about video games that it "encouraged reckless behaviour" or "desensitises youth to violence, making them more likely to turn to delinquency"
It was eventually relaxed after Marvel published a comic the authority refused to give a seal because it was important to Harry Osborn's character arc and after that comic sold very well it was relaxed and eventually replaced with the modern age based rating system.
*I say perceived problems because both the CCA and Hays codes had very antiquated ideas, and many of the things they were mad about weren't even problems.

The artificial blood being blue bothers me. I know its for age-rating reasons probably, but still. The pigment that makes blood red is vital to its function.

I can't stand vampire stories that have *disdain* for the genre and it's conventions. If you find the lore cringey, go pick a different spooky archetype. It's like making a story about Frankenstein, but then deciding instead of being a reanimated corpse made of stitched together body parts, it's just going to be a regular guy with some *gnarly* facial scars. Like ...well then don't call it Frankenstein.

This is EXACTLY what I hate in modern movies. The plot and motivations are pushed along poorly because characters are unwilling to have a simple, normal conversation about what's going on, and it drives other people into villainy due to confusion and anger. Who describes something as a curse in normal conversation? Any sane person who hears this would immediately want an explanation.
The fact Morbius fell 74% in the second weekend is the least surprising thing ever. It barely made 10 million second weekend. That's a bigger drop than Batman v Superman and Dark Phoenix.
Somehow Batman vs Superman was more enjoyable.... probably because it didn't have Jared Leto in it💀

Morbius was never Marvel's strongest character, but there was a real opportunity here to play into the horror aspect and go deeper than they did in the comics. Marvel has a lot of characters like this, actually - Ghost Rider, Mephisto, Hellstrom, Typhoid Mary, and Morbius just to hit on a few. The comics occasionally manage to do new and interesting things with them, but so far the movies waste the opening they have to do something original, instead trying to appeal to the general MCU vibe...and they end up failing at both originality and broad appeal. Unfortunate that Morbius falls into this camp.

DC desperately tries to make their characters fit into Marvel-esque movies, even though DC characters being nothing like Marvel is probably the strongest thing it has going for it among the fans.

See, I've thought about this some, and I'm not sure. I think it is a question of semantics, but yeah, technically, we are all moving closer to the hour of our death, but there is a difference between that, and something actively killing you.
I guess you could say the only difference is the speed.
I think Morbius DOES have real potential to be at least a decent movie; a good man who tries to play god to save human lives, only to be succumbed to the darkness. The real problem here is that Sony tries to turn a tragic villain into a SUPERHERO PROTAGONIST, which is probably the most cliche route they can think of.
Petition for this to become Matt Smith’s human torch moment so he can get coopted into the MCU and people can enjoy him properly

Marvel had an excellent vampire superhero movie. Blade! The original trilogy. I HATE how people forget that Blade was a superhero "before it was cool". Because those movies stood strong and they still do today. Wesley Snipes did an amazing job portraying the character.
Kevin Feige said the success of Blade is what made the MCU possible
Even paid interviewers who should know that keep bringing up the X-Men movies up until endgame despite Kevin has mentioned blade over and over again ....

As someone with Spina Bifida, Scoliosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and a few other things, his horrible method acting or lack there of is far from the only issue I have with this film. I am really disappointed with the way his horrific method acting had him “acting” disabled while not shooting and while just hanging out around set. I’ll be the one to say it, it’s ableist.
I totally agree with you. My take was that I'm sick of hearing him being a douche because he can only method act and its just excused because he's a good actor (?)🤷♀️

Agreed. As a person who is a permanent wheelchair user due to several illnesses that cause me debilitating pain throughout my entire body 24/7 his actions (and the fact that his actions are supported by the studio and hollywood) are disgusting and so incredibly disrespectful.
Fellow people with bad genes and/or rubbish bodies do take care of yourself and remember that no matter what our society tells us, your worth doesn't stem from what you can or can not do but from the simple fact that you are a fellow human being. Our world is not kind to people like us so please be kind to others our world loves to shun and above all, be kind to yourself.

I love that line "Marvel movies are the group project from hell" its a perfect summation of the MCU and it is impressive that they were able to do as well as they did by the finally of Endgame
based on how phase 4 id going so far and the weird future projects (i am groot is a real thing being made) yeah it truly is impressive and i dont think they can pull it off again ever without rebooting the whole thing

@@nkemnoraulmanfredini7286 marvel movies are the group project from hell because there’s too many moving parts (different directors, different storylines, different characterizations of the same characters) for everything to stay coherent. comics are the same thing turned up to eleven since there’s decades of different authors writing the same characters with different characterizations (while also having to take into account those decades of convoluted character and conflict history). comics are notoriously hard to get into since even with all the retcons and reboots there’s not a lot of places to start reading without having to know at least some background info

Nothing is funnier to me than the idea of a room full of well-paid Sony executives sitting around scratching their heads trying to figure out why their live-action Spider-Man villains universe isn't working.
Matt Smiths character was terribly written yet Matt Smith still managed to make it work. Good for him cause I read how he had problems understanding his character, that’s where I saw another red flag for this film.
I think, having not seen the film myself, it sounds like they didn’t even understand the character they were writing. Why would a doctor who has been working for years towards finding a cure to save his own life, then be totally willing to end his life because of one instance where he lost control? I think he either actually needed to hurt more people on more than one occasion, or be more dedicated to the self preservation he felt when he was human. Jared Leto is trash but it also sounded like a case of poor writing as well which means it was always going to be a flop.

I wanted so much for this movie to be good. I was hoping for a feisty Lucian-like hero, and yet I got milk-toast Morbius... They just had to embrace the vampireness and it would have been so fun 😔

I really want to know who at Sony said lets make an entire movie about this C list Spiderman villain and make him the springboard for the sinister 6 that nobody really asked for.

I think starting with a forgettable vampire dude makes sense if they don't think they can hit a home run at first. They can work out some of the kinks on something that gets butts in seats because of vampire fans.
Not "starting," really, because they've done Venom & Spider-Man, but branching out beyond the more familiar Spidey characters to build a stable.
Interestingly, this actually WASN'T a Marvel movie, though apparently they deliberately try to catfish the viewer into thinking it is.
It is a movie with licensed Marvel characters, much like Deadpool/Venim etc, so I’d argue it’s a Marvel movie. It just wasn’t produced by Marvel Studios, and instead by Sony. There’s a complex licensing deal going on with some of these characters, X-Men included.

I did quite like Morbius but I have to admit my enjoyment was very strongly dependent on Matt Smith's performance.
I was so happy to see Matt Smith just having the time of his life while making this movie. He completely outshined Jared Leto just as expected because he'll always be better than Leto.
But that means you didn't like the movie; you simply liked an actor. (same, by the way)

Morbius is an anti-hero
It makes no sense that vulture would teleport anywhere from dr strange’s spell. He was already in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man’s universe and knew Peter was Spider-Man. He would have stayed in that universe unaffected.
Yeah he shouldn't have teleported but, the spell wasn't that only the people who knew Peter as spiderman from the spell. It was for anyone who knew Peter regardless that's why his friends don't who Peter is at all.
As a fellow dyslexic person its nice to know that you had to get motivated in a different way to read as well. Mine was comics and a lot of fanfiction.
It makes me so incredibly sad that so many of my favorite AFAB content creators can't review properties like Star Wars or Marvel or DC any more because of the bullsh*t harrassment they receive. What a tremendous loss of great content for everyone due to dumb cruel bored adult baby fans.
Just wondering cause I see a lot of people using it. Why wouldn't you just say fem presenting content creators since it's usually sexist towards fem presenting creaters cause 💫mysogeny 💫? Like I'm assuming trans men get hate as well but then wouldn't trans women as well? So would it just be people who aren't cis men? Im not well versed in like star wars or marvel communities cause like they're so sexist and toxic (even doctor who as well after the last season) and AFAB is a new word thing for me too, all I know it as is assigned female at birth. Just questioning so I can get a better grasp on how it's used cause Google only does so much 😅

I did want to emphasize that female presenting creators receive more backlash *than male presenting creators for their opinions and content on SW/MCU/DC that they must stop reviewing them altogether.

@@thejazzy6012 I might be misreading what you're saying, but most trans men are not fem presenting? That's like saying that because of their biology they can never pass/present as masculine. AFAB makes sense in this contex. If you're wanting to include cis women, trans women, and AFAB trans people I would probably just say "AFAB and fem presenting people" because that includes everyone. I say this because as an AFAB nonbinary person, it's really frustrating when people call me fem presenting. I'm not presenting fem, people just perceive me as fem regardless of my presentation because of my body. U feel?

I find it funny that even Matt Smith didn't understand his character, the director didn't do a very good job
if you love modern vampires PLEASE watch what we do in the shadows (both the movie and the show) because that is the greatest modern vampire comedy and it needs more appreciation
I'm also not a big Jared Leto fan. I've never been able to get into the characters he portrays. Some actors can go the method route well but doesn't work for me with him. The recent story of him plopping his ass down in a wheelchair to be wheeled to the bathroom so he can stay in character was a little much for me. Stories like that make me not want to see the movie. To each their own of course.
I’m really bothered by his blatant brown face in Wewrecked. And if you aren’t aware before you ask, he plays an Israeli man and he is clearly tanned to look like he is brown and he’s wearing brown contact lenses when he naturally has blue eyes.
He just can't act. His Oscar win is one of the worst they've ever given.

Here's my thoughts on a simple way for Sony to improve on their movies. Make the main character an actual villain instead of anti-heroes. Then let the villain, who we clearly identify as the villain, win in the end. Legitimately set up spidey's rogues gallery in a way that people invested in the mcu can get excited for.
So a chunk of this movie is how to deal with being hangry....
In the comics Morbious was more of an antihero than a bad guy. Spider-Man tries to cure him. The same thing that turned professor connors to the lizard is the same thing that changed morbious.
Unrelated but related, Blade first appears in a Spider-Man comic book hunting Morbius
6:50 my friend is studying electrical engineering and his explanation for Michael becoming a Nobel prize winning medical researcher is the fact that he hated electrical engineering so much he switched to med sciences - and I honestly think it's canon
I only want to watch this film because Matt Smith is in it. Couldn’t be bothered to see it tho and I’m glad. Modern vampirism is explored much better and entertainingly in the What We Do In The Shadows series
I actually like Jared Leto in Requiem for a Dream, but like, any other role he seems...like he plays himself with a slight shift in personality. Also, you should look into his cult. 🥰 I think that's some information you can have fun with.

Tvd is honestly a guilty pleasure. I know I shouldn’t love it or enjoy it but I really do and not in the ”so bad it’s good” way. I even liked s7 and could honestly see 3 more seasons
I binged all the seasons of True Blood, right before the last season came out… last 2 seasons were a huge let down. I’d also love for her to look into Leto’s cult, I was shocked to see him in a new movie…I thought being a Prophet was keeping him busy enough these days 😌
"What We Do in the Shadows" is a funny vampire show. And if you like to read, both TVD and True Blood are based on books. Can't speak of how close the shows follow them though. 🤷♀️
True Blood is great, especially the first few seasons, then it starts to fall apart. I also second What We Do in The Shadows as a great vampire TV show

The movie came first and is bloody fantastic as well. The TV show and movie are similar but with different actors. I’d watch the movie to get a sense of the NZ humor first and then dive into the show.
So the thing with Milo is he didn't test out his skills, he just went out there and started killing people. He totally could have done the bat stuff too he just didn't know how, vs Morbious was full Dr. Jekyll and wrote down all his finding about being a vampire after testing himself.
Like nah the movie was a mess, but that was pretty clear watching it

And it’s not too long. It’s over quick so it doesn’t feel like a waste of time.
My interpretation to why only Möbius could control bats was Morbius spent time exploring his powers and theoretically using the scientific method to understand his powers where Milo has just being attacking people so for the most part Milo is better at using offensive powers like using the echo location as a sound wave attack where morbius is better with complicated and creative powers like flying and bat control.

i think one of the issues with Marvel/Sony is that they try to make the movies for every age group regardless of the content and so you just get watered down stories with no real substance
I did the same with True Blood! Watched the first 5 seasons and then it started to fall apart, unfortunately. Tara and Lafayette deserved more attention to their story lines.
The only interesting thing about this movie to me is that they filmed some of it in my city (Manchester, UK) and I got to see a bit of them filming from far away lol. It was not as exciting as the local news made it out to be though

Despite the flaws at DC they did understand that and let Todd Phillips make "Joker" without no interference and made it rated R and its the first rated R film to break 1 billion and is the highest box office rated R film
And Kevin Feige just came out and said there will be rated R marvel films and tv shows
So Sony has no excuse to make morbius rated PG -13 and keep him a full hero
The sad thing is this legitimately could’ve been a good vampire horror movie. If only the studio and script had let live up to its potential. I still thoroughly enjoyed it for the sort of nonsensical vampire movie that it was, but it could’ve been so much better.

As a kid, I was a ride or die Marvel Comics fanatic and even I had never heard of Morbius until the movie was first announced. Seemed like an odd choice to devote a movie to but, hey, it worked beautifully for Guardians of the Galaxy, so I was cautiously optimistic. Now that the reviews have come in and the general consensus seems to be that Morbius is at best aggressively mediocre, I don't think I'll bother.

Morbius as a character has never been that great/beloved a character. And Leto is not a star that people will run out to see. And add to that the “brilliant” leadership of Madame Sony and this was doomed to flop!

As a kid i remember seeing morbius through old issues of amazing Spider-Man, he was always kinda just a neat sad side character, and it bums me out to see him just crapped on by this stuff. Oh well, at least it isn't a character that matters lmao

Yes people are just not feeling this movie and it's basically a discount version of the first Blade movie. It even follows a similar plot line.
I love how not even Sony had faith in this movie and straight up spoiled the post credits scenes, aka the only reason people really had left to see the movie, like a week before it came out
I'm a lot older, so I grew up with some really not great movies. I didn't think this movie was terrible, it was okay in my opinion, but those after credit scenes were hot garbage and didn't make any sense. I agree with almost everything you said though. If they had gone R rated and embraced the horror this could have been really good. I kind of hope they put out a R rated director's cut, maybe that could bump this up a little more.

Morpheus in the comics is fun because he is a science vampire in a setting that has supernatural vampires. They were planning to bring him in as a villain in the Blade movies I think that would have worked super well.
I'm a bat biologist. The trap in the trailer is a real thing called a harp trap. I have not seen the film but based on the trailer it is not being used correctly. You would not put it at the entrance of a cave with millions of bats, you wouldn't bait it/block it with your body (bats aren't sharks), and they haven't screened it in so bats would fly around it.
So, I'm a huge Man-Bat fan, I love vampires, and I liked Morbius from what I saw of him in the 90s Spiderman cartoon. So, I was really hoping this movie would appeal to my bat-crazy, vampire-obsessed brain. However, everything I've heard about it makes me afraid to approach such a trashfire, even with rock-bottom expectations.
I feel that. I somehow managed to go into this movie almost totally blind-I literally didn’t even know Jared Leto played Morbius until I looked up reviews afterwards…and thank god, because knowing that would have *really* hampered my enjoyment. Anyways, the vampire element was the one selling point for me. And, oddly enough, it delivered what the edgy, vampire-crazed teen within me craved. Don’t get me wrong: it’s a bad movie. It’s so inconsistent and rushed, and so many ideas aren’t explored as much as they should be. But if you’re a vampire lover looking for a quick, mindless fix, maybe give this a shot.

Funny story about Morbius, I was only familiar with the character at first because of the Spiderman the Animated Series cartoon, but because of weird "kid show" rules he couldn't be an actual vampire, so instead he had weird sucky-holes in his hands that would drain people of energy or some such nonsense. I thought that was just how the character was for years
There's a very weird indie movie called Mr Nobody, and it's the only movie I like Jared Leto in because the character is sad and confused most of the time, so it works. Plus, other actors play his younger and older self.
Why would Milo struggle to walk if he forgot his cane and therefore forgot to act like he was still sick.
